So, ep 21 happened, Qing Chuan found out that Four was a manipulative user who was trying to off family members and have her killed and promptly broke up with him.

This is probably the sole time I've seen DTMFA in action in a drama. Ever. Drama heroines always put up with a ton of crap from the man they love but not Qing Chuan! I love it! Because much as my inner fangirl/shipper is wishing Four and QC could work it out, in real life, what is the only sane thing to do - to trust a man who you know has killed and manipulated before telling you he changed and this time he means it, on the off chance he does, or do the smart thing and run?

Of course, the irony is that we, the audience, know Four has really changed and he does genuinely love Qing Chuan and plans to give up all his ambition for her sake. If she stuck with him, he'd be a good person. But how can QC herself, not in the audience's privileged position, ever be sure? And even if she could, the fact still remains this was a man who was earlier willing to murder her and did kill family members - how do you ever get over this and be with him and trust him after that? Not to mention that the very reasons Four fell for QC - her warmth and forthrightness and humanitarian impulses, and her pretty black-and-white view of the world, are the reasons why the moment the truth is out, he lost her forever.

I like that she gave him a chance to confirm or deny and that was that - no listening to long explanations, no trying to rationalize it to self. But the way she was able to cut cleanly really does show that her liking for him was an infatuation - equal parts the romantic historical ideal she cherished since girlhood and worshipful impression based on few kind acts he did towards her. She didn't really know or love the man, so once the illusion was gone, she was able to let go of the feelings relatively quickly. (Compare this with her situation vis-a-vis Eight - whatever her feelings for him may be, they are and will be based on reality and on her knowing him really well).

And speaking of Eight - Qing Chuan, what is wrong with you? When Eight tells you he's not going to bother fighting for the throne any more if you don't like it, jump at the chance, don't encourage him to go after Four instead and be 'blah blah blah you are way better suited to be an emperor.' Come on, did you get amnesia and forgot your history? You know how this will end! You are supposed to try to prevent it, not push it over so it will definitely happen. Unless you want Eight to be offed, in which case, go ahead. I know she's planning to change history but shouldn't she know it won't work and she's way better leaving well enough alone.

I have to say, I am so torn. On the one hand, I loved the dark, dysfunctional deliciousness of Four/Qing Chuan and every time they have a scene together even now, I melt.

But OTOH, every time Eight/Qing Chuan are on-screen, it's a bubble of pure happiness - I can't stop smiling and feeling ridiculously happy. And that scene with Su Yan on the roof! Oh Eight, you suicidal noble darling idiot, you!

Caps coming...
