OK, I looked online and couldn't find an answer. Maybe one of you knows, or knows where I can look.

Mr. Mousie and I want to go on vacation to Chile and Argentina in the beginning of September. I know seasons are reversed down there, but the weather in the cities will be OK for travelling. However, part of it will involve driving in the Andes between Chile and Argentina (in fact, it's the part both of us are looking forward to the most). Question: does anyone know how I can find out if the mountain passes are drivable that time of year?

Related question. We were planning to go to Chile/Argentina (with a detour to Uruguay) in the beginning of September and go to Hong Kong/Thailand in November. Part of the reason for that is I read September's monsoon season in that part of Asia. So, question: is it? Or could we do HK/Thailand in September? In which case we'll flip the trips. Going to Chile/Argentina in September means missing out Tiera del Fuego, Patagonia, Lake District etc though we didn't have time to do everything anyway.

a quick google turns up this itinerary
http://www.geoex.com/trip.asp?tripID=4338
which has a tour driving around in the mountains of Patagonia in October.

But, I don't really know enough about the region to do a more specific search. If you can give me terms (like place names or mountain names) I can try again.

Oh wow, thank you!

I am going to look the names of towns in the evening as I left my guidebook behind!

Ooo...Argentina and Chili are lovely. I'm useless, though, in pointing you toward finding out if the mountain passes are clear or not. I'll ask my friend, who grew up there, if she knows how to find that out.

Hong Kong in the fall is a lot of fun. Actually, Hong Kong is always fun, but the weather is much more amenable in the fall than it is during the summer. I was in Thailand in July once and it is wretchedly hot. The beaches are gorgeous, though, and being beachside helps cool one down considerably. Monsoon season in Asia is around July through the first bit of September, so you might be okay depending on which part of September you plan to go in.

It was going to be really early in September so I guess no HK then :)

Ehhhh, looks really negative, so am not reading. Skimmed it though.

Pssssst...this isn't a mystery, if you think about it for years and predict every possible permutation, obviously you are going to hit on everything in the books.

Awww, too bad. I was wondering, as someone who liked the book, if you have any rebuttals to her particular criticisms. She wasn't complaining that she predicted everything, she was complaining that things were badly done and structurally unsound. Her dissection of the monomyth and Joseph Campbell as it applied to Harry Potter and DH was really interesting.

These travel plans sound awesome! Though, boo, if you go in beginning of Sept then I suppose you'll miss me in NYC - assuming I make it there then (I was thinking being there Sept 1 to Sept 15 or so..)

Then again, considering how much you guys travel, perhaps you'll make it to Finland one day & we can meet up then. :P

Hong Kong in September (as it moves into fall) is pretty perfect. August is rainy, but September is pretty good.

Now you made me miss the city. But oh, I sigh, and very excited for you. I hope you enjoy the trip. :)

I was in Hong Kong last November and we were caught in a monsoon. It was about 30'C and pouring with rain, which made it very humid and gross, but the city made up for it!! Apparently that's late in the season for one, but it can happen.

November sounds good for Asia, especially Thailand. It's hot there (like the Philippines) and gets even hotter during their summer season. I haven't been there in the -ber months, but friends and family testimonies say it's much cooler. As for HK, I dunno how it'll be this year but I was there Sept '05 and there was a storm. It rained every single day I was there. Nov would be better because it's much cooler ;)
