What is your favorite drama OTP?
Jul. 2nd, 2007 07:09 pmIt's official. The Outsiders bumped off Mars from my Top Drama spot. I am shocked.
But Chen Ling and Qi Luo are still the drama OTP for me (if I had to pick the tragic drama OTP, Ah Hao and Yu Yen would get the spot, but as it is...).
So, this is what this post is about.
What is your favorite drama OTP?
They can be the main OTP of the story, or a secondary OTP, or even not even a couple in canon.
They can be the best thing about an awesome drama, or the only thing making a mad drama worth watching.
But.
BUT.
If you had to pick your Number Uno, your bestest-mostest-favoritest drama OTP, what/who would it be?
And for extra geekery. Why?

Date: 2007-07-03 01:21 am (UTC)And of course it's always so fun when one character can do a complete turn around-- it was so enjoyable watching JJH's cold personality eventually melt away for YEH. (that's also what I loved about Bi and Song Hye Kyo in Full House, but that's another story.)
And if I could pick a secondary OTP (pleeease, I can't leave them out even though you said just one) it would be Jung Ryeo Won and Daniel Henney in Sam Soon. It was just so beautiful the way Daniel Henney's love for Jung Ryeo Won never faltered, even when he saw her worst sides, even when she flat out admitted that she had no feelings for him besides friendship, even when she went back to Hyun Bin's side. I just feel like they had such a strong relationship and one of the intriguing points was that (in my opinion) Jung Ryeo Won really had feelings for him all along but didn't even know it until much later in the series.

Date: 2007-07-03 01:43 am (UTC)Oh. This is such a difficult question. I have many, many favorites and I'm going to take the opportunity to launch into some Reasons Why.
In no particular order:
1. Kurosaki/Tsurara - The OTP of Ultimate UST
He's a mess of contrasts -- petulant, calculating, generous, wary, stubborn, soft-hearted, broken, fragile, afraid, and shockingly brave, all at once. She's strong-minded, determined, kind, resilient, and yet terribly naive. They make a remarkable pair, I think, in that they both have what the other is missing. Put them in the same room, and...sparks. They bicker, they snark, and yet ultimately, they understand where the other is coming from. I sort of descend into general incoherency when I think about the physicality that sort of bubbles underneath the veneer of calm that comprises their interactions.
2. Domyouji/Makino, Dao Ming Si/Shan Cai - Awesome in Every Incarnation
Spoiled boy, spunky girl, a trio of hot friends, and an evil mother. What's there not to love? I love this OTP because they're the only ones who can get away with that much angst and general comedy, SIMULTANEOUSLY.
3. Soujirou/Yuuki - Secondary OTP of Awesome
What's key about this OTP is what they DON'T say. Yuuki is the antithesis of everything Soujirou thinks he wants, which is why she intrigues him so much. I can see why Yuuki is so attracted to Soujirou at first (I mean, he's F4, what's not to love?), but it's the Sara storyline that really shows that Yuuki wants more from him than the superficial things he offers all the other girls in his life.
4. Hiroto/Nao - Theme for Young Lovers
I know you know about my all-encompassing love for THnK -- Hiroto/Nao is a favorite because it's so CLASSIC. It's every single cliche I love about fictional romance, all in one neat, pretty package. Star-crossed love? Check. Terminal illness? Check. Boy with haunted past? Check. Add a dash of disapproving parents, cute siblings with wheelchairs, awesome friends, and a Celtic-sounding orchestral score, and you've got one of my favorite romance jdramas ever. Hiroto is probably one of my favorite jdrama protagonists because he's so REAL. And while Nao could border on childish petulance, she never crosses the line into "annoying" for me. Hiroto and Nao have this transparency to their relationship -- no absurd miscommunications, no crazy love polygons, just a couple of kids who fall in love. There's nothing horribly extreme about them (no one wanders into the snow or anything) and the "obstacles" they face aren't as out there are they could be, you know? I could go on, but I think I may max out the character limit. XD
5. Ling/Qi Luo
This is the OTP that shouldn't work. He's violent and messed up; she's broken and haunted, and yet...together? GENIUS.
6. Haruto/Aya - I cried 1 Liter of Tears
Oh, how much do I love them? Aya is beautiful and funny and comes down with a horrible disease with no cure. Haruto is this smart, shy science-loving kid, and they become friends, and as her disease progresses, he's the one who supports her through it all, never treating her any differently. His confession to her is so earnest and shy and never fails to make me burst into tears. They're doomed, sure, but she changes him, makes him want to be better. And now I'm welling up just thinking about it.

Date: 2007-07-03 06:20 pm (UTC)Shin/Chae-gyeong, of course, and Gong-chan/Yu-Rin. I have a huge soft spot for OT3s, if they're canon (Nobuta/Shuuji/Akira, in any incarnation) and even if they're not (Gong-chan/Yu-Rin/Jeong-Woo BFFs!). And one of my favorite secondary OTPs has to be Shohei/Akane from Orange Days, which I highly highly recommend if you haven't seen it already!

Date: 2007-07-03 01:51 am (UTC)Picking a drama OTP is hard for me, but I want my drama pairings hopelessly in love, passionate and devoted to each other (I think most people want this?) My top OTP ever are Lily Evans/James Potter (if written well). So for drama OTPs, I like the Tree of Heaven OTP, Meteor Garden, Mars and Silence. I also love the ISWAK OTP, just because he's such an amazing genius, but he simple can't control his feelings (swoon).

Date: 2007-07-03 02:02 am (UTC)The angst is totally measurable ok. Not like Silence ot ToH.
I love your otps!

Date: 2007-07-03 03:23 am (UTC)Chiaki and Nodame from Nodame Cantabile. Okay sure, Chiaki is pretty abusive towards her and she acts like a complete idiot ... I couldn't help myself but cheer on for these two! They know they need each other in their fill that missing part of their lives, you know?

Numero Uno position goes to.....
1.Tsukasa/Tsukushi and Dao Ming Shi/Shan cai- Ok. OK I love them in all incarnations. I just can't help myself but since it is, technically the same pairing I say I love these two...just because.
At first when I watched Meteor Garden I was totally into Shan Cai/Lei and (not knowing dorama conventions) I was sure they'd get together...and then I think it was when Shan cai was beaten up by those people and Dao Ming Shi was just holding her...I just switched fanbases. And there is sooo many other reason why I like them together as a couple but mostly because it is NOT workable and so NOT perfect but somehow...they make it work. And she completes him and he completes her. I mean, I just cringe thinking of how much of an asshole DMS would have been without Shan cai there and how screwed up he would have turned out.
Well I guess Makino/Tsukasa are a different pairing but ohwell....:P:P
Well, I have to admit that half the reason I love these two are because they are played by the gorgeous Mao Inoue and Matsumoto Jun. I really really love Makino(and indeed she is a tough weed:P:P) and I love how airheaded and snobby Tsukasa is(lol...only Jun could play this character to perfection:P:P). And I love (just like I did in Meteor Garden) how she changes him(for the better) and how he wants to change and be a better person because of her. Once again(eventhough I knew she would end up with Tsukasa) I couldn't help rooting for Rui(mostly because of my enormous Shun love)...but when he protected her from Sukurako and let the thugs beat him up, when he stood out there in the freezing rain just waiting for her and whenever he acts completely possesive of her I sigh. I just love them as a couple. And in HYD2 when he was all angsty and saying they couldn't be together(but really he still loves her.Awwww!!) and throwing the Saturn Necklace and letting go of her....OMG!OMG! I love them soo much...
...so yeh I guess they were my first *real* OTP that I love and I guess it's going to take a while for something to displace that...but I must say I have massive love for Ling/Qi Luo and Zhi Shi/Xian Qia and Sam Shik/Sam Soon....and recently Kenzou/Rei...so yeh...
...OMG! It was sooo hard to pic a favourite!!

Mine, shock of shocks, is Hwangbo Yoon and Chae-Ohk from Damo, for reasons we have discussed endlessly. I have yet to see another OTP where the other is anywhere near as crucial to each other's existence as those two are.

makino/ doumyoji from hana yori dango
my reason would have to be that it was the first drama i ever saw that i was soooo into the pair... rich jerk and poor girl story but its the changes that they incite in each other that makes it sooo worth it... that and jun is a hottie... but like when i first saw it i was rooting for rui and makino since doumyoji was such a jerk but the more i saw him and how he shows his love for makino then i totally was all over this pair...
kdrama
shin/ chaegyung
why because goong is just major awesomeness... and the way that she teaches him more about the world outside to the gilded cage he lives in. and JJH and YEH just looked sooo adorable together. its the way that she has to adapt to palace life but she still keeps who she is and in doing that she helps him open up and not just this emotionally closed off guy...
tw drama
xiang qin and zhi shu from ISWAK
i just love ariel and joe in here... and i love the whole series it was just hillarious... and the part where zhi shu was dressed up as a girl by his mom till kindergarten because she wanted him to be a girl * still giggles everytime i see that scene of little zhi shu dressed as a little girl*...i like how she persevered and worked her hardest to get him to notice her.. and when he figured out he likes her in the rain after denying it for so long was just sooo good....
i also love qi luo/ ling, sam soon / jin hun (sam shik), ah meng/ qi yue... so far that is all i can remember...

Date: 2007-07-03 09:36 am (UTC)Anyway favourite OTP(s), hmm...
Favourite OTP of my teenage years - Yukiko and Masashi of Tokyo Cinderella Story. I know that no-one will know of them, but their story is sooo poor girl rich boy and all the cliches that go along with it. She's quietly strong, has left home to strike it alone in Tokyo and works as an OL. He is rich, has family issues and admits to her that he is not the good man she thinks he is when he asks her to spend the night. To an impressionable teen, this was the OTP from heaven.
Favourite OTP of adulthood - Halu and Aki, what can I say? He was all man and she was all woman. A meeting of equals. He's so strong and male, but so gentle with her, and so honourable that he WILL NOT lie about them and neither will she. And I love that they still found each other later, sticking by the old adage that if someone is truly meant to be with you, let them go and if they return than they're yours...
Favourite OTP ever...ever...EVER - not from any dorama, but Chow Mo-Wan and Su Li-Zhen from In the Mood for Love...when he whispered his love for her into the hole in the wall and blocked it all up with mud, guh, my broken heart has ever recovered from it. And in a way, the Soujirou/Yuki and Ximen/XiaoYou relationship is an extension of this in dorama form.

I really want to see TCS now, after your write up.
And Aki and Halu. So amazing.
I love In the Mood For Love

Date: 2007-07-03 10:12 am (UTC)Okay, seriously speaking, how can I ever choose. Basically, I adore-adore-adore the OTP's from my top three dramas - Gong-chan/Yu-rin from My Girl, Quan/Rui Xi from Hana Kimi and Nodame/Chiaki from Nodame Cantabile. Of course I do, they're my favourites, would be somewhat illogical if I didn't adore the OTPs.
Then there's Shin/Chaegyung from Goong, as you of course know of their wonderful.
Then there are the dramas I haven't finished and thus am waiting to form my final opinion on, but where I just love the OTP. Like Corner With Love (they bicker and befriend each other and fall in love and bicker and kiss and bicker and..) and Que Sera Sera (so unfitting, so unexpected, so difficult and yet so adorably perfect) .
Blame it on the Hana Kimi jdrama excitement (it airs in Japan in 3 hrs, I'm almost googling for web-streams of Japanese TV), but I want to pick Rui Xi/Quan for this. Despite the drama's flaws (craptastic ending for one), the chemistry was sweet, fluffy but also occasionally UST-y and hot. I just adore how she brings him out of his shell and gets him back into high jump and how much they needed each other and how they were also just like any two regular friends and god, that OTP just kills me with cute. Not so much with the drama but so much with the adorable, which suits me just fine.
Also, Chun-Ella is the only actor pairing I'm tempted to ship. Their teasing of each other is to die for - the Making of S.H.E's Zen Me Ban video, they're constantly picking on each other and if not a romantic pairing, they make the cutest friends.

Well that's what I think *prays hard that the makers of Proposal Daisakusen realizes this*
