It started out so funny and the protagonist was so well-adjusted and...surprise...it spiralled into darkness and misery and enough torture to make a BDSM enthusiast blink. By now the main character has enough issues for them to have their own residence. Seriously.
STOP BREAKING MY HEART, DRAMA!!!!
But I have never adored a main character in a drama the way I do Xiao Chuan. His gritted-teeth nobility is just...guuuuuuuuuuh. Oddly, he reminds me a little of Song Tae Ha from Chuno. I was literally gasping and clutching my arms at this scene:
Zhao Gao has contrived to accuse the entire Noble Clan of treason and brought soldiers there to drag them out to prison and torture. And Xiao Chuan is there to warn them but he got there too late so there is no way out. And the Clan members want to fight Zhao Gao's soldiers because they are doomed either way, and at least this way they will go down fighting. And Xiao Chuan is trying to persuade them to surrender because that way they have a chance and also because that way the Crown Prince is not implicated (Noble Clan is CP's). And the Clan members yell at him that he is not a Clan member, he is safe, no wonder he can say things like this. So he tells them to bring out Clan roll, and cuts his finger, writing his name on it in blood - he freaking joins the Clan as it is about to be carted off for torture and probable death!!!!!!!! And he asks them if it is enough and now they will follow him. And walks out to face the soldiers. OMG.
(And then Zhao Gao gives him a last chance to say he is not a member but he unrolls the Clan roll as proof that he is).
All the torture scenes were horrible.
Not just because of the torture (whipping a person until their flesh is literally torn open, not a good thing) but because of how Zhao Gao is enjoying himself - as he points out to Xiao Chuan, who needs friends?
Xiao Chuan may be loved and have friends but he, the friendless Zhao Gao, is the one who is holding the whip. And Xiao Chuan's bone-deep anger at how far he's fallen and at the injustice of it all.
But I think that is what is driving Zhao Gao so nuts - he cannot do anything to break Xiao Chuan enough to see Zhao Gao's way as the correct way. He can torture him close to death and break every bone in his body but he cannot get him to see Zhao Gao as the one who is correct and with all the power.
I wonder how Xiao Chuan will get out of this though - Zhao Gao would love to keep him as his personal torture pet forever. I bet Yu Shu is going to be key. Once she finds out the love of her life is whipping experiment N1, she is not going to sit still. I can just see what will happen, when Qin Emperor's favorite concubine goes to him and tells him the guy who has saved his life is now being beaten to death in a dungeon. Oh yes.
