Swallow the Sun - episodes 7-8
Mar. 25th, 2010 02:15 pmI loved eps 7 and especially 8 with a ridiculous amount of passion. We have the awesomeness of primary OTP and the secondary OTP and a bit of a bromance plus shiny lights of Las Vegas.

I took almost 600 caps and had to significantly pare them down. yes, me = obsessed.
When Hero (I finally remembered his name - Jung Woo) goes to greet Mob Boss after he's out of jail, Mob Boss has flunkies tell him he isn't going to see him. Hero is no dummy, he realizes Mob Boss' promises to provide for him are worthless now. I also love the way Mob Boss looks on it from above - in his face there is a certain cruel satisfaction about destroying someone's house of cards. It's almost as if he's drinking it in. I wonder if, in part, it's because he recognizes himself in Hero (though hero is miles a better person, there is a certain wildness and will in both of them) and has a perverse pleasure in wrecking his life.

His friends waste no time pointing out he basically ruined his life and also that Gangsta Girl hooked up with Secretary for his sake. Hero is realizing just about how scummy Mob Boss and his org are.

Mob Boss tells Secretary Hero is useless now so to get rid of him.

Awww, cop's wife and hero.

Hero sees Cop.

Here for the pretty as Hero broods about his horrific parentage.

With orphanage lady, hearing more childhood stuff.

Ahahaha, guess who stopped by with offer of help! I love it.

Meanwhile heroine is auditioning for Cirque du Soleil. The random plug for Jeju island was hilarious in this scene - this random white girl is all 'you are Korean from Jeju, OMG Jeju = best island ever!' LOL (Btw, Sung Yuri's english is so bad it makes me cringe but at least all the Korean English-speaking characters here have an excuse - they are all Korean-born and bred, their English should be bad).

Charming. Rich Boy invites her for dinner, propositions again, gloats she didn't get accepted etc - he is a total idiot.

Hero (who is tough and amazing and surprisingly decently adjusted despite it all) decides to put his suspicion (he's been cast away) to the test. He confronts Mob Boss and tells him that since Boss told him he bought his soul, he wants to know how much his soul is worth. Mob Boss says soul of a scum like him is worth nothing, and to get lost. You are going to really regret these words, old man!

He tells Gangsta Girl she should live the life SHE wants. (God, he's so awesome).

But of course his belief in his worthlessness isn't made better by all of this. I almost cried at the scene where he was drinking with cop's wife and talking about his dirty blood. Ohhhh.

He meets up with the former guard who knew his father. Guard expects to be paid off by Mob Boss and actually says nice things about Hero's Dad and Hero feels so relieved.

Ooops, actually Mob Boss had the guard whacked and Hero framed for the murder. He has to leave Jeju forever.

Elswhere, Mob Boss informs Moneylender that they tracked down his missing daughter - she's in Las Vegas working as a stripper. Moneylender is not happy at all. With all his faults he's a loving father and who wants to hear that about his child?

His daughter is pretty happy though - she's got her high-paying job :P and her boyfriend came back home. She cooks for the occasion. They are so domestic and normal only heeee - he's a mercenary and she's a stripper! Love.

Dork!

Girl friendship. I love the three of them together.

Heroine gets hired by Cirque du Soleil after all, to work for a man with a funny hat. Well, at least with his fashion this way, it's pretty clear he'll never make a move on her.

Guess who took up Jackson on his offer of help and arrived in Vegas! YESSSS! They will all be bodyguards to VIPs!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Ahhhhhhhhh! I love the bromances! I want them to be bodyguarding and hanging out with their awesome ladies forever!

For no good reason except the writers wanting to film Vegas at night they wait until darkness to enter.

*tongue*

They are to be bodyguards to some exiled African king who is richer than Croesus and worried about assassination from people who ousted him. So they get to stay in nice digs.

God, he's gorgeous!

He looks at Heroine's pic - he knows she is studying in Vegas.

I love how his friend is all 'go for it!' Heee, ship cheerleader.

They meet their employer who seems pretty good to them and in general.

Their first evening of duty is at this giant party the ex-King throws. Hero is all 'he is actually paying us a giant wad of cash to watch sexy bimboes? I should have been kicked out of Jeju long time ago!" And there is also Hero/Jackson bonding. I loooove Jackson's dry sense of humor.

OMG. I was squealing like a fur-wearer at a PETA picnic. Hero found Heroine and watches her walk by! He wants to approach her but by the time he nerves himself, she's drinking in a bar and is pretty drunk (her job isn't going as well as she wants). OMG, the way he looks at her. I just love the helpless adoration.

Some guy tries to pick her up getting more and more obnoxious despite her rejection. Ahhh yessss! Her knight in tarnished armor to the rescue!

That was the cutest scene in the whole ep! I was grinning from ear to ear! She wakes up in a totally strange place with no idea how she got there - her clothes are all still on so she's pretty sure nothing untoward happened but she decides she's still better off sneaking out :)

But who comes in but...

He makes her hangover soup and they chat and it's clear that they instantly click again - they are so normal and ridiculously compatible together. (He tells her how she ended up in his place etc)

Meanwhile, Roommie and Amy are totally worried - she didn't come home all night. But once she shows up they are all 'so, how's the new boyfriend?' LOL. I remember those days.

Guys have some chatting of their own. Hero's thug buddy n1 tells Jackson that Hero finally managed to track down his crush. LOL.

I found this sequence really interesting - they basically intercut Amy stripping and Jackson playing in some really high stakes underground card games. I just find their relationship so fascinating. Because it's clear he loves her, a lot, but he is an adrenaline junkie first and foremost - I loved in the scene where he comes home with all that won money and she tells him she wishes he didn't gamble and he replies that he has to - adrenaline from gambling replaces adrenaline from guns - if he couldn't do it, he couldn't stay here. Because implicit in it is that 'merely' his love for her is not enough to keep him there (and her face in that scene- she understands that - yikes). But of course OTOH, the fact that he is willing to look for susbtitute indicates he does love her and it's not just gambling for adrenaline. Otherwise he'd just keep playing as opposed to leave when he won - that and intercut with her stripping and the fact that he gives all the money to her - part of it really is that he wants to earn enough so she'd stop her stripping job even though he won't tell her so directly because when he asked her to stop she said she wouldn't.
And the thing with her stripping - it's not econimic necessity, not really - even if she was worried about what she'd do if she quit and he went away (and that makes little sense - stripping is the kind of job they'd take her back easily if she was hot), she could always get a 'normal' job, not to mention the amount of $$$ he gave her is enough to keep her for a decade. And there is always the fact tha she could always contact her Dad for $$$ - with all his flaws he dotes on her. But instead she continues to strip. And part of it is to assert her emotional independence but I think another is a way of lashing out both at herself and at her boyfriend - as if to punish them both.

Plot:

They are going to go on a date to see a Cirque du Soleil performance. He is so adorably puppy-smug.

I laughed so hard. Jackson: "So, is this the girl you are crushing on?" Jung Woo: "ajdjfdjfkldkd what girl? She is not it and it wasn't me it was this neighbor I have never met and..." Seriously he is so flustered. LOL.

They go on a picnic! And he tells her a fairytale on request! And watches her work! And they are both so effortlessly happy! He avoids telling her he is an orphan though when the topic comes up. (The way he looks at her throughout - *melt*)

They spend all day together and then he drops her off.

OMG, I nearly exploded. She leans in and kisses him on the cheek - telling him thank you for awesome day and helping her with her writer's block and everything (So adorable! She knows he likes her and she totally likes him back. AWWW!)

I love how he is struck dumb! I just love big strong lugs who could take on an army turning into jelly when the pretty object of their worship notices them - as if they cannot believe their luck!

Guess who witnessed this? Guess! Oh, DIAF already, Rich Boy!
