I sniffled my way through most of ep 8, and it wasn't because of my cold.

One of the things I love the most about Someday is how understated it is - if you think about it in abstract, the plot and the set-up could make for a hell of a traditional melodrama with shouting and storms of tears but that is not the case here - voices are almost never raised and whatever crying there is is minimal - and yet precisely because of this quietness that it feels more real and gets me ridiculously, obsessively emotionally involved.

One such example of how unusual and perfect this drama is? It's that after Seokman's suicide attempt it's not Hana who finds him (as in any other drama - we'd have a big, dramatic romance moment) but Secondary Girl (whose name escapes me but who is awesome). Secondary Girl has no romantic interest in Seokman (she views him in a rather noona-friendship kind of way. It's Kim Min Joon's character she is in love with) and the scene itself is so low-key: there is no discussion of suicide or confessions of his debt or long conversation about his desperation - no, she takes him to her office and talks about his earlier ideas and offers him a job.

But yet, despite all this, I cried like a silly little kid - when Seokman asks about his advance/salary, asks for $30K and then uncertainly backtracks and says he knows it's too much (it kills me how little he demands/expects in life - unselfishness and modesty are good traits but in him they are taken to such extreme because of his trauma that it's unhealthy - he NEEDS to learn to be a bit selfish and to actually want something and go for it for himself, not for others), and when Secondary Girl gives him a $30K sign-on bonus and offers a $50k/salary and he asks her to transfer the bonus to the mobster's account and then you see him lean back in his seat as it's beginning to sink in for him that he doesn't have to die and you see him sort of go limp and he is just sitting there, quietly crying, saying "It's so easy." I totally bawled.

I loved all the stuff in the ep before that scene - his counting how many minutes he has left and getting his math wrong, his visiting the hospital and tying up all the loose ends, his scene on the river bank with Hana (the hug! I need to cap that), his suicide attempt itself, when he walks off limping and muttering "stupid stupid stupid" not able to think of anything but that he failed. And I loved all the stuff after - Hana missing him, or Hana trying to uncertainly bond with her mother through drawing, or the awesome end when she walks into Secondary Girl's office and sees that the writer SG hired (Hana says she can't draw her story because she's good at drawing but not comprehending love and Seokman left and she needs him for this) is Seokman. And the look on her face, that he hasn't left (he lied to her that he was going to France) and the look on his face -- just, guuuh. But I loved the scene in SG's office where his debt got resolved the most. It really is so realistic - that sum is little to SG and the business world she rolls in (or in white collar world/profession in general) but for Seokman that was the cause for being killed. It's the disparity, you know? And the fact that he gets his hope back and just - I just want to hug him and feed him soup and tell him it's all going to be OK.

I rather love that Secondary Girl is a Hana/Seokman shipper (because she wants Kim Min Joon for herself and KMJ is stuck on Hana). Honestly, KMJ's character freaks me out a bit - he is a nice enough guy but he is subtly controlling. I also think he and Hana would be a very uneven match, and not just because he's 30 to Hana's 21 - both Hana and Seokman (who's 22) are emotionally wounded children. They are a good, equal match. With KMJ's character, he would always be in control, always be the boss.

Gosh, this is going into my Top 10 kdramas.

You know, I need to make a list of my most underrated actors - because three of them (Bae Doona, Lee Jin Wook, and Kim Min Joon) are all together in this drama and it's amazing what they can do.
