I have finished episode 1 of Summer Scent, one of the four seasons dramas and I like it a lot! I don't think it will eclipse Spring Waltz, one of my all-time favorites and in my top 10 dramas of all time, but it's lovely - like the other seasons dramas I have seen (SW and Winter Sonata), it's great at creating atmosphere, a mood.

SS stars Song Seung Heon as Min-Woo, the angsty architect, and Son Ye Jin as Hye Won, the fragile florist.

The story is rather deliciously kdramaish - Min Woo has lost his fiancee in a tragic accident. Since then he has wandered the world expressing his grief through horrific vests and awful hair (it's impossible to make SSH look unattractive* but the wardrobe and hair people did their best and it's not their fault they failed). Now he is back in Korea.

Hye Won, idealistic and somewhat sheltered, is someone who has had to live her whole life with the shadow of death over her - due to disease, her heart was no good at all. Luckily for Hye Won, a miracle happened, a suitable donor appeared and Hye Won was saved.

Now she is happily employed, enjoying life, healthy, and with a would-be fiance. One day out hiking in the mountains she meets a nice young man who helps her out when her ankle is sprained.

And thus Min Woo and Hye Won's love story begins.

Ooooops. Did I mention her heart beats strangely fast when she is around Min Woo? Who was her mysterious donor? I think you see where this is going.

DELICIOUS.

After one episode in, my reasons for liking it are simple:

(a) the hero appears to be a remarkably nice guy. He might have had some horribly tragic events in his past but unlike a lot of kdrama men who would have used this as an excuse for unbridled jerkishness, while he is still broken up about his fiancee's death, he does not view it as an excuse to be a bastard - he is well-behaved, easy-going, and very kind and patient with a total stranger. So far, he is a darling.

(b) like other seasons dramas it's filmed oh-so-very prettily.

(c) it promises shippy action galore.

(d) the heroine is likeable and though a little too sheltered not stupid, obnoxiously clumsy etc.

(e) the trainwreck syndrome - I cannot wait for him to fall for her and then learn the truth.

This MV, btw, is lovely:

* Re SSH. This comment by an allkpop writer cracked me up because it's so true: "Song Seung Hun is the luckiest bastard on the planet. He has in his arsenal one of the best pick-up lines in the world that probably works on most women without fail. All he has to say is, “Hi. I’m Song Seung Hun” and I’m sure the girls melt." Heeee.
