Oh, God. People at TWOP, just SHUT UP!

Yes, yes, JRM is not over six feet tall and Henry VIII was. OMG! Ohnoez. Horrors. OMG, not historically accurate. BLAH. I am one of ten people who didn’t love Rome (it was good but didn’t grab me) and am one of ten people loving The Tudors. Anyway, nothing wrong with thinking it’s boring, slow-moving, whatever. Lay off historical accuracy. The sainted movie Elizabeth (which I hate. Pretentious. Ugh. Hate pretension. Maybe that is why I don’t mind The Tudors, it doesn’t try to be ‘aaaaart’) was really inaccurate. So was Rome (which was also a bit on the pretentious side. The hilarious sex scenes, put in there just to show how edgy they were, turned me off because…LOL. No, not really edgy. This isn’t what sex looks like. Get it right, or even better, don’t try to be fake-explicit). The day I see a truly historically accurate movie/show, I’ll keel over in shock. There is a reason I prefer most of my history reading to be non-fiction.

Except for Richard III novels that is. GUUUH.

In other news, I finally bought Veronica Mars season 2 set. Despite my utter dislike of how S3 went down and complete annoyance at the waste, I adored S1 and liked S2 a lot, and will just prefer to think that the show ended in S2. I remember I started a rewatch/blogging about S1 but stopped somewhere around 1.16. I should restart.

In other news!!! EEEEE! Thank you [livejournal.com profile] booknerd714! Apparently Rain is coming to North America to do concerts in June!!!!! I am so going this time, even if I’ll be probably one of the few non-Asian girls. I got experience in that from Bollywood shows anyway and I am not missing my chance to see Rain rip off his shirt in person. [livejournal.com profile] smartylibrarian, I checked and he is coming to New York, so we are definitely on ;)

Oh, and speaking of events! Nathan Fillion’s upcoming romantic comedy Waitress is doing previews all over. Check out here for whether there are show times round you and (if interested) get free preview tickets from there.

This is why I only go to TWOP for chuckles over how people can be stupid(like when they go on for eternity about there being no homosexual themes in Agatha Christie's books and then use any version of "A Murder is Announced" as an argument when it has the most canon homosexual couple Christie ever wrote)

The sex scenes in Rome are a large part of why I haven't checked it out...and frankly, any time I see Cleopatra and things like"orgy" my instinct is to go "no thank you" because, historically(propoganda wrtings aside) the only men she was ever linked to were her husbands(and not at the same time) under the laws of her country.

YAY! to getting VM S2.

What's waitress about?

TWOP people are scary.

Rome is not historically accurate AND pretentious about it. While Tudors has a laid back attitude about it that endears me to it.

Waitress is about a small town waitress who is planning to leave her icky husband but discovers she is preggers. She also falls in love with the town doc, NF. It's an indie...

I'm odd about my historical shows and movies myself...I'm just as likely to love something for being historically accurate as I am to hate it, and the same is true for blatantly inaccurate. It's all about how true they are to history as they set it.

I'm not going near the TWoP boards for The Tudors. I'm doing just fine on balancing my annoyance at its rape of history with my gleeful love of its soft-pr0ny soap-operatic glory, and I don't need the denizens of TWoP harshing that!

I think the super-cranky people need to look at nekkid screen caps until they forget what they were raging about. At least that works for me. :-P

yeah apparently in RL i am the only in my circle of friends and family loving the tudors... why cause it's meant to be entertaining not historically accurate... i am sadly waiting for the third eps...

and yeah i am waiting to get some money and will be buying season 1 and 2 of VM cause sad to say the third season wasn't worth watching.. although i knew they shoot the college scenes in sdsu (san diego state university) and i live in sd but like wrong to say that one of the pa's was a friend.

Because the two are so mutually exclusive, eh? I myself never found the life of Henry VIII to be lacking in drama without conflating and inventing events. Entertainment is obviously the goal of drama but to use that as an excuse for not doing your homework is weak indeed.

Date: 2007-04-11 04:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
They are not mutually exclusive, but they don't have to match up. I have yet to see a really historical movie. I used to be really upset about that stuff (one of my double majors in college was history) but I realized that it was pointless: it was never going to be accurate. Now I view most historical fiction as an AU, an enjoyable or not as the case may be, but the inaccuracies, short of something truly staggering don't bug me if I like it otherwise...

Try Gettysburg, which is a brilliant account of the battle. For Henry VIII, A Man for All Seasons is quite good. But if you're looking for something that blends history with entertainment, Marie Antoinette is probably the best recent film on a historical subject. At the other end of the spectrum, the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven combines personages and compresses the timeline of the fall of Jerusalem but does a good job of portraying the attitudes of the various parties invovled in the Levant.

Date: 2007-04-11 01:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yes, I've seen most of those (except Gettysburg, I never had much interest in military history). But the point is, they are also, to differing degrees, ahistoical. I adore Kingdom of Heaven, frex, but it's not just ahistorical, it's geographically utterly wrong: Jerusalem's topography is nothing like the one portrayed in the movie. And Marie Antoinette definitely feels deliberately anachronistic (I also dislike the twit Marie Antoinette herself, historically. I can't muster much sympathy for her). It's a good movie though.

I think my point is that I just don't particularly care if it's accurate or not, if it's fiction, as long as it entertains.

From: [identity profile] janlake83.livejournal.com
no they don't have to be mutually exclusive but although henry viii was always a fascinating character and the whole history of england quite fascinating.. i highly doubt all movies/ shows that are based on history are accurate.. why not give a new spin to an old tale? yes it's not accurate but i highly think its appropriate to just write off a show about henry viii because it's inaccurate... it's a show and shows need drama/ events that people would like to watch.. we have all seen the other depictions of henry and his children but this is just another take, they take artistic license but so did some of the others..

taking some artistic license is to get viewers to watch... meaning yes it should be more accurate but they know their viewers want drama and JRM *hotness*

As I said in my journal - it's not the historical inaccuracy, it's the fucking atrocious writing and the careless production design. Either be accurate or be good - frankly, I'd prefer both but one or the other will suit. Enjoy The Tudors if it please you - Henry Cavill certainly pleases me - but really, I would find any argument that The Tudors is actually good TV hard to believe.

Really? I think it's good TV. It's pretty and it's entertaining and so to me it's good TV. It might not entertain you so it's not good TV for you, but that is why there is so much programming out there: something for everyone.
