I have just finished ep 6 of Beautiful Days (selective fast-forwarding does wonders for one's speed).

Hmmmm. It makes me think of Love Contract of kdramas, i.e. I love the Hero and like the Heroine and the OTP is very awesome, but they are surrounded by secondary characters each of whom makes me want to drown him/her.

Seriously, I keep yearning for the Hero to tie them all up in one giant bag, and throw them in the Han river.

Who do I start with?
(1) Evil Father, who is, of course evil? He throws a giant party on the anniversary of his first wife's death.
(2) Stepmother, who seems to have trademarked the martyr routine? I think we are supposed to think she is saintly, but I just find her weak and annoying.
(3) Or Ugly Brother, who is also high-maintenance and into self-pity? Sample conversation. Ugly Brother to Hero: 'if I die before you, you won't go to my Mom's burial service, will you?' To which Hero, being the only sane person in this apparently freakazoid family replies: 'If you are worried about it, then make sure to live longer than me' and walks off. Did he get all the sanity supply in that entire family?
Jeez, I am shocked the Hero is relatively well-adjusted, what with being surrounded with people like this.

Then, there is Hero's troubled sister, who I shall henceforth dub Korean River (as in River from Firefly). She is sweet with her brother, but much too dependent on him, and is a total brat, what with underage drinking, being chased by cops, wanting to do public striptease, and major anger-management issues. The only character more bratty than her is Sena, Heroine's quasi-sister. I want to strangle quasi-sister with my own hands, as she seems to blame Heroine for a myriad woes of uncertain nature, is a shoplifter, likes to pull other's people hair, and took victimhood to an art. I keep hoping she and Ugly Brother hook up to form the Whiny Supercouple. I keep longing for the Heroine to bitchslap her, but Heroine only keeps weeping and trying to look after her. I suppose that's your lot in life if you are supposed to be the Flower of Pure Korean Womanhood, but I wish she'd let loose just once and slug her.

The Hero and Heroine are totally adorable together, however. They have lovely chemistry, and have fun together, and he is very functional with her, while still holding onto his emo. If it wasn't for his family from hell, I'd actually find Hero one of those rare drama heroes who'd be cool to date in real life. I love all their interactions, and the little ways he takes care of her. There is this one scene after which I became a total slave to them as an OTP. They are in a diner, and she starts crying. He gets up abruptly, and you think he just stalked off, but he just goes to the end of the counter, picks a bunch of napkins, and matter-of-factly plops them down in front of her, because if she is crying, she might as well have something to wipe her eyes on. Yay. He has also made an agreement with her to be a live-in tutor to Korean River (in exchange for his giving Quasi-Sister a chance as a singer. He is a record executive). His psycho family is not keen on it, probably because it's a logical and common-sense thing to do and they are allergic to both of those qualities. However, it leads to plenty of opportunities for him to intrude into her personal space, which is very very hot and adorable.

There is also a scene where, even though he has a car, he rides the subway with her, and they just stand, not touching, side by side, on different escalators, and it's gorgeous. Or my favorite when he asks her to draw him, and she does, it's all lovely, and the camera lingers on their lips, and his eyes, and collarbones, and...is it hot in here? I have to admit Lee Byang-Hun is gorgeous. He actually looks a bit like Korean Alain Delon. And then when the portrait is done, he takes back the check he was going to pay with and says he wants it as a present and can he have it?

So yeah, so far we have one adorable OTP. I can totally see why the Hero glommed onto the Heroine. She is pretty, and sane (clearly a rarity) and rather old-fashioned, and very 'good girl' and kind. Nothing he has around. Also, they both have to take care of head-case sisters.

Unfortunately Heroine just found out that Ugly Brother is her childhood crush. I would be more worried for the Hero, if Ugly Brother was a bit better looking. Or less whiny. Though I think we are supposed to think he is 'sensitive artist' instead. Nope, sorry, still whiny.

Did I mention that the Hero did a Domyouji and gave Heroine a separate cell-phone which rings just for him?

Anyway, it's fun.
