Goong manhwa: drown, drown everyone!
Mar. 16th, 2007 04:28 pmDid I mention that six volumes in, Goong manhwa is giving me ulcers? I hate everyone in it except for Chae-Gyung and Yul. Seriously. I love Shin in the drama but here I want to punch him in the face. (I had a bit of love for him in 4 but in 6 it's back to smackdown time).
WTF?
Get over yourself. Stop being such a jerk.
(I am at the her-grandpa-has-cancer storyline).
Seriously, I am a CG/Yul shipper in the manhwa however much I adore CG/Shin in the drama.
Seriously.
*smack in the face*
Well, to be honest I alternate between liking him a lot and wanting to murder him, with some regularity.

Date: 2007-03-16 08:51 pm (UTC)Re: Yul. Really? So far, I rather like him. I actually liked him for most of the drama. Yeah, he should get a clue CG doesn't like him but I can't blame him for the feelings. I can however blame him for trying to steal Shin's father's love, especially since Shin viewed him as a friend and everyone can tell how much Shin wants his father to care about him but I can see why he wants to position back and will like the King's approval.
I think he came out on the positive side of the ledger for me, ultimately. Too grabby, yes, and a bit too desperate for my liking but ultimately a good guy. (
Though when I was watching it, I wanted to strangle him now and then. But it was more of an emotional reaction because of my OMG Shin and Shin/CG flags :)

Date: 2007-03-17 04:35 am (UTC)It seems that there are more "sweet" scenes between CG and Shin in the manhwa, though :D

Date: 2007-03-17 10:02 am (UTC)I did some Goong fic search once via google and ran into a ton of Yul/CG fics written based on the manhwa. The same people were really disappointed with the drama.

Hmmm, I can see both of those. Unlike something like Meteor Garden which is basically scene-for-scene adapation of the manga, Goong, while not completely out there, is more-or-less free interpretation of the source material: they keep the set-up and the key scenes like wedding night or the tv interview, but there are a lot of things they put in that aren't in the manhwa and vice versa, and the circumstances for a number of them are different. And there are some characters that exist only in the manhwa (CG's grandpa, who i a very kdrama fashion gets cancer :D) and some only in the drama (Shin's sister).
And the characters are somewhat different, at least some of them. Chae-Gyung and Yul (at least so far) seem fairly close to their drama versions. So is the King. But CG's parents aren't wacky (I actually have no impression of them much one way or another), The Queen is much nicer, and Hyo-Rin and Shin are very different. I actually quite like Hyo-Rin in this version: she is much less manipulative and she is forthright, soon after his marriage, with Shin about her being (apparently) illegitimate and she never picks on CG. There seems to be starting a subplot about CG's brother falling for her (I think he's older in the manhwa than in the drama).
And Shin is vastly different. I think his issues are somewhat the same, but not entirely, and his personality is quite different. Shin in the drama struck me as someone incredibly reserved and controlled and kinda apart from other people whether he wants to or not. It's that yummy reserve that gets broken down that got me so much. That, and the fact that he comes across as an over-thinker, someone too logical for his own good, who needs to cope with emotion as he hadn't been expressing himself for so long. But this Shin is rather different: he is more 'normal boy' with a temper and spoiled/bratty/angst issues. Which is OK, but not my thing at all.
Goong seems to be one of those rare dramas that I like better than the manga (Mars is another one).
