Fruits Basket babbling...
Mar. 3rd, 2007 09:48 amYes, still Fruits Basket. Just finished volume 9.
It just gets better!
OMG. OMG. Kyokyokyokyo. How horrible! No wonder he is so incredibly twitchy when we first meet him. Sohma family is just...seriously someone should report them to child services and then they will be locked away and I'll cheer. Because OMG OMG OMG OMG!
When Kyo and Tohru visit Kazuma's (Kyo's adoptive father's house), and it's so adorable, with the friendly bickering between Kyo and Kazuma (Kyo never acts so much as a 'real boy' as he does with Kazuma, except with Tohru), and Kazuma burning all the food he was cooking for their visit because he got spaced out reading (I've so been there, done that) and Tohru volunteers to cook instead and Kyo helps, and they are so adorable together (OM! At one point he leans over her grinning and eeeee! Shippy squee!!!!), and you can see how happy Kazuma is to see Kyo like that, a normal boy, enjoying himself (btw, I love Kazuma's secretary too. When he tells Tohru about how Kyo was like a kid and Kyo is all embarassed, LOL.)
But then Kyo's birth father wants to see Kazuma and Kazuma goes to meet him so Kyo won't find out. And and and and...
OMG.
Apparently, the 'cat' when he reaches majority, has to come back to the main house, and get locked up for the rest of his life in a dark room, never to leave it and always alone. The HELL??????? No wonder Kyo went all freaking-out when they had to make plans for their future in school. He knows what Akito (Akito hate!!!) has set for his fuure, so no wonder he flipped. (Also no wonder he is so active now).
Bt you know what's the worst part of it? Kyo's father is there, to talk to Kazuma, so as Kazuma won't cause any trouble when it has to happen! His own father! And he refers to Kyo as a 'thing!' and talks about him not being able to bear to have that 'thing' live outside, and he blames him for his wife's death and OMG OMG OMG horrible.
But my Kazuma love knows no bounds. Because he doesn't even bother to respond to the accusation that he just took Kyo in for the money, but says he will never go along with the plan (yes! Finally a member of the Sohma family standing up to evil Akito!) and he walks out, telling Kyo's father to grow up. To find Kyo and Tohru having fun in the kitchen and wondering where he went and he says he won't let anything happen to Kyo (who is of course clueless as to what brought that on).
Poor Kyo. But I can see why Kazuma is so happy to have Tohru around. Because he and the secretary are remembering Kyo of a year ago, who wouldn't even smile or lift his head (I think that happened after he found out about what was supposed to happen to him, and also after Tohru's Mom died).
In case, you can't tell, I am still all about Kyo. I like all the other characters, but somehow the manga gets more interesting when he's around. And I love how he is clueless about his feeling for Tohru: Shigure is trying to push him, for drama, and he is all 'huh?' but when Black Haru goes on a rampage and is about to involve Tohru he snaps :)
And that brings me to Haru. I love him. Love him, love him. He is so awesomely protective and caring, even Yuki comments on it. And he gets Tohru through the Haunted House by making random stories to make her feel better. Poor guy, his break up with Rin (whom we've just met, as for some odd reason she is trying to seduce Shigure ???? She's hot though :D) is driving him up the wall. That is why he finally snaps into Black Haru. But seeing that Rin is in the hospital and just got out, and she was crying to Hiro earlier, not only is it certain Akito is behind her injuries (as the Trio was discussing earlier), I bet it's because Akito went nuclear finding out about the relationship between her and Haru and she is trying to protect him. Akito=hate.
And OMG, if I didn't get a bad!wrong vibe from Akito's fixation on his male cousins and hatred of having them hook up with anyone, I certainly have it after meeting Kureno. OMG, how much do I love that little story. Uo, Tohru former gang leader friend, is working in a convenience store, and she bumps into Kureno, who has no idea there are shopping baskets and they totally connect (it's so cute when he bows in thanks and his purchases go flying). And then she bumps into him again, and he asks her to lunch and it's the most adorable thing, and he tells her he's never shopped in a convenience store before because he doesn't get time off and he says he's content but she thinks to herself his smile is very lonely. And then there is more awesomeness and cuteness and awkwardness (because he is 26, 9 years older than she is) and he admits that he couldn't stop thinking about her either and there is shippy awesomeness and his touching her hair and smiling, finally, a real smile. EEEE!
But then, he comes home, and you see the person he comes home to is Akito and Akito is all 'I hope you didn't cause trouble on being ouside, Kureno' and there is creepy face-touching (the way someone would with a boyfriend) and eeek eeeek eeeek eeeeek! Seriously creepy bad!wrong creepy.
Hmmm, what else. I loved Yuki's interactions with the weirdos at the Student Counsel. Heeee. He is beginning to come out of his shell more and more. And I love the progress he is making with his brother. Yuki has all these barriers but I think his brother is beginning to get through.
And of course, Uo and Hana's stories confirm that they are all misfits. The story of FB really is coming to terms with who you are and finding happiness no matter how odd you are so yay.
Oh, and we meet Ritsu and I feel bad for him but OMG he and Shigure's editor as so cute together.

Date: 2007-03-03 03:06 pm (UTC)And I'm totally a Tohru/Kyo shipper.... Oh, how I love Kyo.... he's probably the most broken one out of them all. I love how he is so rough around the edges, yet he can still be so gentle towards Tohru.... *LOVE* I love Yuki too, but he doesn't seem to need healing as much as Kyo.
(Thanks for getting me hooked on this manga - a positive distraction from the growing angst of Hanadan2...)

Date: 2007-03-04 02:25 am (UTC)I'm sure there's some sob story behind him too, but NOTHING can justify his disgusting behaviour. Oh, I hate him....
Exactly. Nothing could excuse his behavior. Whatever his excuse, I don't care and want rabid monkeys to bite him :)

That is what I love so much. He is so attuned to her. And with the exception of Kazuma, he never had much care in his life but he is capable of learning and showing it and it's just so awesome. And I agree, he needs her more than Yuki does.

Date: 2007-03-03 05:30 pm (UTC)And you're so close to two of the volumes that made me cry buckets of Yuki-fangirl tears.... Omg, I can't wait until you get there, to see what you post! ^_^ It's so fun to watch someone react to this series, it reminds me of when I first read the same things!

Date: 2007-03-03 07:48 pm (UTC)Kazuma is so beautifully close to Kyo. He's the only one that protected Kyo from destruction all those years. And I remember that scene with Kyo and Thoru about making food ^^. The cute ^^.

Date: 2007-03-04 12:30 am (UTC)Y'know, your FB comments and opinions are almost exactly like mine if you just reverse the Momiji/Hiro preference.
I have very thick Kyo centric filters on when it comes to FB, and only Haru and occasionally Ayame at his most awesome really get through them.
In my world, Kyo's dad is "accidentally" hit by Kazuma's car and everyone who lives and/or hangs out at Shigure's throws a party. Though...Kazuma's existence makes you wonder if seclusion includes conjugal visits.
And didn't I warn you about Kureno and Akito? But he and Uo are just too cute together. Now if we could just get an OTP for Hana...
I adore the student council. BTW, the girl who tends to freak out and break things is Yuki's OTP.
Hmmm...Ayame should be winning his "best brother ever" award soon...it involves their evilhorriblewretched mother and parent/teacher conferences.
I guess Rin started doing stuff earlier than I remember. Maybe I just place it later because she doesn't get her cover until later?
Rin is the only person in the series who's more protective than Haru, except that he spreads it over everyone, while most of hers is focused on him.

Date: 2007-03-04 02:23 am (UTC)Re: Momiji/Hiro. I can deal with hyper-sugar-rush a lot better than annoying to Tohru :)

LOL. Me too. Every time Kyo is in, I get all concentrated into it. Except replace Ayame with Hatori (who is so my type, it is awesome).

Oh yes, bulldoze him. Re: conjugal visits. I don't think so. Kyo's *blech* father said that the cat can't get married, so I guess Kyo's grandpa got some girl pregnant before he had to be locked up.
And didn't I warn you about Kureno and Akito? But he and Uo are just too cute together
Every time I see Kureno and Akito together, my skin just goes creepy-crawly in a major way (at least Kureno is relatively adult. When Akito started being cute with Haru? Ugh). Uo and Kureno are adorable together. Though I hope Akito never finds out because Akito is possessive as is, of everyone, but Kureno is his *eeek* 'pet' so OMG. Kureno comes across as incrediblt gentle somehow.
I adore the student council. BTW, the girl who tends to freak out and break things is Yuki's OTP.
Yeah, I figured out. Yuki+a girl is just an awesome, adorable concept.
Rin is the only person in the series who's more protective than Haru, except that he spreads it over everyone, while most of hers is focused on him.
From the little I saw of her, I love her. She's got 'tude but she is (as you said) protective. Haru totally deserves and awesome OTP.

Date: 2007-03-04 02:42 am (UTC)Yeah on the cat's seclusion, but it's still fun to joke about. Actually, it strikes me as odd that Kazuma even knew, for some reason.
Kureno strikes me as an incredibly sweet and gentle person. I get the feeling that he's the only one that actually cares about Akito, though his head should be examined for such.
I love Machi, and her brother(the guy who has decided Yuki needs a friend)
Rin rocks and I want to see more of her. Sadly, she still hasn't done a whole lot. I also adore her design, though the mangaka says her hair is a pain to draw.

Date: 2007-03-04 06:20 am (UTC)LOL. Ayame cracks me up, but I am all the angsty-intense-reserved combo that is Hatori.

I got that sense too. All I have to say is, you have to have a Saint's level of compassion to be able to even tolerate Akito. I want someone to stab him with rusty scissors so Akito would die painfully. HATE.

Date: 2007-03-04 06:30 am (UTC)Akito is one of two anime/manga characters who I have instinctively and utterly despised(not including characters like Tessa in FMP or the Mary Sue in Orphen 2...getting TPTB to be less in love with them would do wonders for the characters) The other is the president in Fulmetal Alchemist, who needs toe DIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIE for what he did to poor Al(and then be resurrected so we can "discuss" his forcing Roy, Armstrong and other less important characters to become murderers in the war)

Date: 2007-03-04 06:50 am (UTC)But UGH. Akito. I love how Ayame is trying so hard. Because he grew up and wants to atone!

Date: 2007-03-04 07:08 am (UTC)And that's why I love Ayame so much, because he realizes how deeply he screwed up and how much Yuki means to him, so he's doing everything he can to be the best big brother he can be. Which Yuki gets, as much as it annoys him. I think Yuki is actually rather touched by it, he just wishes it was a little less overwhelming. And he and his shopgirl are surprisingly cute.
