So I finished ep 1 of Liar's Game.

My (positive) thoughts are

So, one ep in, I'll definitely keep it on my roster.

I really like it. In some ways, it reminds me of an inferior Kurosagi. That is not a slam, as Kurosagi is my second favorite jdrama ever. I went psychotically obsessed over it, and emotionally riveted and everything about five minutes in and stayed that way through 11 eps.

One ep in, I don't see myself developing that level of investment in Liar Game, but I do really like it.

What do I like more specifically?

1. Set design. It's gorgeous. It has a certain twisted-fairytale quality about it, all the saturated colors, Nao's almost gingerbread house apartment, the gorgeous reds and blues of the Chinatown. The prosaic and faintly creepy place where Nao's opponent lives (with the rocking horse in the yard). Some people on d-addicts are saying that you can see that this is a drama with not a lot of money, but while it's not as dripping with cash as, e.g. Hanadan, the set design is awesome.

2. Matsuda Shota. I confess I am spacing out staring at him. He is much too gorgeous. And cynical and brainy. I was enjoying it before he showed up, but once he did, my enjoyment kicked into overdrive. Once again with the Kurosagi comparison, apparently no swindlers in Japan are allowed to be ugly (and I also own his luggage bag but it's a separate issue heh). And as the little flashback to the dead woman in a pool of blood indicated (when Nao asked if it's bad to be honest), he clearly has some trauma, also a la Kurosagi.

3. Toda Erika. She is as cute as a button. Her character is adorable and sweet. Though quite dimwitted. I ended up watching the first ep with Mr. Mousie and he pointed out that between the two of the main characters 'they have one functional brain and it's not a sharing situation.' Heh. But I do like her.

4. The chemistry and the OTP potential. As [livejournal.com profile] calledinvain said, 'start your OTP engine.' Consider it started. They have lovely chemistry and I like that he clearly has a warm spot for her innocence and she is so shiny eyed aboit him (or anyone who'd help probably). He seems much less damaged than Kurosaki, so I am holding an OTP hope. My favorite of their together scenes was clearly the prison one. EEEE. Someone totally needs to write Kurosagi/Liar Game crossover (OK, now I am imagining slash and that's a scary thought :D)

Thing I do not care for too much:

Plot holes. It has a bunch and if you thought Kurosagi's swindles were too easy, these ones will drive you up the bend. I confess to thinking through some of this: just get your opponent and break his kneecaps and he'll tell you where stuff is. I think I am too violent. :)

I am curious how they are going to keep it up for multiple eps though. In this ep, Shota's character agreed to help Nao for 50mil yen but they almost got it already and the time is always over. So what are they going to do for 11 eps? Hopefully make out.

Oh, and I am a bad person, but I laughed when Nao was all 'my Dad has terminal cancer.' Very kdrama.
