Harry! Potter!

It's only now beginning to sink in that the last Harry Potter book will come out this summer and there will be no more. It's been years for me, since I fell in love with Potterverse, merely through the Philosopher's Stone being the only non-baby-book in the department store I worked at during summer break. It was 1999. Wow. A long long time ago. And like everyone, I have a Potter-history. Hooking my best friend on them. Going to three bookstores to get Goblet of Fire. The loooong wait between GoF and OotP (I temporarily even got into Potter-fandom through Sugarquill). Reading OotP after picking it up at midnight, and finishing it on a morning flight to Chicago (we went there for a weekend with Mr. Mousie) and bawling my eyes out as the businessman next to me looked at me in acute puzzlement. I finished the book as the plane landed and started the trip by sleeping for a few hours in the hotel as Mr. Mousie took the book to a park to read. Picking up HBP once again at midnight (and seeing people sprawled on the grass, by gas-station where the light was, because they didn't want to wait even a bit before starting reading). That night I also stayed up and in the morning flew to visit family in Minnesota (my evening flight got delayed until the morning and I was happy because it meant I could pick up HBP). This seems to be a sort of tradition ;)

Yeah, I cried. Again. People would chat me up on the plane and go 'wow, you are that far in already?'

So, I thought I'd do a Potter-centric q and a. As in, I'll give my answers and you give yours.

Favorite HP Book: Half Blood Prince.
Least Favorite: Chamber of Secrets. Or maybe Order of the Phoenix.

Rank them: HBP, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Philosopher's Stone, OoP, CoS.

Favorite main character: Harry Potter himself (I adore Ron and Hermione, but sorry guys...).
Favorite secondary character: Sirius Black
Least favorite character: I don't dislike any of them, except in a 'they are bad guys, must be disliked' fashion, but I confess to Hagrid boring me a bit. Because syliasyliasylia reminded me, Dobby. Eek. Ugh. Dobby can get killed in 7th book, I am OK with it.
Favorite Ship: (canon or un, I don't care): Harry/Ginny. As e4e put it, very filmi. And the whole angsty guy, bubbly girl is my favorite trope.
Unpopular fandom opinion: Draco. Why? The popularity of him will never cease to amaze me. Canon Draco is such unpromising material. Cassandra Claire has a lot to be responsible for.
Harry, live or die: Live. I am an optimist.

Our order of books is really similar :)

I am so glad someone else has Harry as a fave. I adore Ron and Herminone but I have that extra bit of love for Harry.

And, oh, Sirius. He is sort of like fanon!Draco. Only awesome.

And I hope Harry gets to live, marry Ginny, and have a huge, loving ready-made family in the Weasleys, as he never had one before. And have 10 kids with glasses and freckles.

yeah i know what you mean, i started reading harry potter because my sister was like you have to read this and as soon as i read philosophers stone i was hooked.

The loooong wait between GoF and OotP (I temporarily even got into Potter-fandom through Sugarquill).
Funny coincidence, I also surfed SQ during that time period. I got annoyed at it very quickly, in a couple of months, though. It didn't feel like a very newbie friendly place and I put much thought into my posts but felt there was no real conversation as only regulars replied to regulars and other posts got ignored. I was only 15 back then, though, so maybe my posts weren't that brilliant and worth replying to, anyway. ;) I posted some OotP reactions on the board but left shortly after that.

Favorite HP Book: Goblet of Fire. The first book I read, still my favourite. Perfect balance of adventure, terror and cute awkward teenage romance.
Least Favorite: Hmmmm. Probably the first book. I think JKR developed a lot as a writer between books 1-4, and thus 1 isn't that well-written in my eyes.

Rank them: Goblet of Fire, Prisoner of Azkaban, Half-Blood Prince, Order of The Phoenix, Chamber of Secrets, Philosopher's Stone.

Favorite main character: Ronald Weasley. [insert squeeing here]
Favorite secondary character: Luna or Neville or any of the non-Ron Weasleys, minus Ginny (I don't dislike her but she's far from being a favourite).
Least favorite character: Sirius Black (sorry don't hurt me!)
Favorite Ship: (canon or un, I don't care): Ron/Hermione. On the un-canon side, probably Harry/Ron or Harry/Luna.
Unpopular fandom opinion: I love Ron/Hermione but severely dislike the whole One Big Happy Weasley Family scenario (which is also why I love to explore the more angsty, dark and dysfunctional side of R/Hr).
Harry, live or die: Live. But if he does die, omg the fic ideas will eat me (for sad angsty recovering-from-friend's-death R/Hr stories, naturally).

I found SQ pretty friendly. I don't post there any more, but I used to be really active around 2002? 2001? Or so. People were a little bit cautious until they got to know you, but I found it true on all message boards. But then, I was all of mature 23+ at the time so was clearly brilliant :D

Not a Sirius lover. I'd say I am horrified, but I am not, because somehow I didn't think he'd be your bag (no idea if all the way to least fave, but certainly not a fave :D)

I adore OBHWF scenario. Potterverse is the one place where I want everything fluffy and happy and with bunnies because poor Harry had such a sucky life ;)

I threw a hissy fit when Sirius died. If Harry dies, there will be muuuuurder.

Favorite Ship: Non-canon, Harry/Hermione. They've been my favorite since the first time I picked up Philosopher's Stone. Canon-wise, probably Bill/Fleur.
Unpopular fandom opinion: I think my favorite ship is probably unpopular enough :p Really though, maybe it would be that I don't think Snape is going to be redeemed. I think he's working for Voldermort and the truth will eventually come out. Now Draco on the other hand.....

I honestly have no idea if Snape is wholly evil or it was some hidden thing with Dumbledore. I do hope for the latter because otherwise it really will be 'looks evil, disliked by Harry=bad' and that's a bit too simplistic. But I am not holding out for big reveal there, either, so we shall see.

I hate Umbridge. Those scenes in OotP were horrible. Awful. Oh Harry. Oh Harry.

Though it did lead to one of my favorite HBP moments:

I shipped Harry/Ginny for FIVE YEARS. I wrote fic, made icons, had a little fanlisting, made tons and tons of friends through forums, etc... I still love them, but I have left the fandom and sometimes I am a little sad about it. But anyway.

I thought that if Harry got together with anyone, it would be Ginny (because honestly, she was the only one consistently there, and Hermione/Ron was there from the start so Hermione was out) and she didn't seem to have much of a role other than crushing on him, early on at least. But I never thought it would really happen, so when we got HBP, with the blazing looks, and public kissing and everything, I totally squealed like a sad fangirl I am.

I've basically been a fan since they came out. And.. I started reading them because my mom would read them to me as bedtime stories. Favorite HP Book: It's a tie between Half Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix really. When you look at it, I love the books when it talks about the founders.
Least Favorite: The first one. For the same reason as Fivil.

Unpopular fandom opinion: Hum I could have said Sirius Black, but I kinda changed my opinion on him lately. I'm more...let's say that I can understand his situation. I still don't get why he is so loved but well. Fandom can be a mistery XD. Anyway, I'll have to go about Snape. I don't get why people get the idea that he's a nice guy. Even if he didn't betray, he is not a nice person. Not. At. All.

Favorite Ship: Well, in the fanon world, I'm decidedly Draco/Ginny because of the potential for both fun and angst even though there is absolutely nothing in canon that makes it plausible or gives us anything from which to back up our fanon!Draco characterization but it's still fun (so don't judge me!), but in terms of canon (shh, you can't tell anyone), I'm very much a Harry/Ginny fan, from the very first moment they met. Oh, and of course, Ron/Hermione for all the bickering and snark.
Unpopular fandom opinion: Snape. Why does everyone think he's sexy? I just don't get it.

Least favorite character: It was Draco until the revealed emo-ness of HBP, and now I'm sure Jo will do something lovely with him in terms of (painfully) tearing away the racist bigoted prick facade he wears for Daddy. So now? Um. Lucius. Boring.
Favorite Ship: Canon ship -- Ron/Hermione. Fanfic ship -- Draco/Hermione. When done right, and IC as much as possible. Which makes for slim pickings, of course -- do far only three, three-and-a-half fics actually qualify, but they are damn good. (No, the Draco Trilogy is not one of them. In fact, I never made it past the first paragraphs of that fic. Bored me to tears.)
Unpopular fandom opinion: I'm sorry, Snape killed Dumbledore to save Draco. He's not evil. He's a good guy (i.e. white hat) with an absolutely rotten personality. Which is wonderfully complex and interesting as a literary device, though if the man himself were real I'd itch to slap him 24/7.
Harry, live or die: Live, totally. I don't know what people are smoking to think JKR would kill him off; she's writing according to a pattern, people, and the pattern doesn't include death-defeat. (It can include death, or defeat, but not death-as-finality or defeat-as-finality.) Please familiarize with Joseph Campbell, kplzthnx.

Favorite HP Book: Half Blood Prince?
Least Favorite: OotP? SS/PS?
Rank them: I dunno. I'm having issues ranking as I just sort of think of the books as one continuing story. I do agree with whoever said JKR's writing has improved since the first one, though.
Favorite main character: Harry
Favorite secondary character: Snape (even before I discovered fandom)
Least favorite character: Hagrid. I so wanted him to be the OotP death.
Favorite Ship: Canon: Ron/Hermione. Fanon: Draco/Ginny. What? It's a trope.
Unpopular fandom opinion: No more nearly naked pictures of Daniel Radcliffe. It's creepy.
Harry, live or die: Live. He's 17, people, and this is targeted at teens. I still expect a sizeable bodycount, but not Harry (or any of the Trio).

HP memories...

GoF: This was back before I had any idea how popular the books really were. I remember standing forlorn in bookstores looking at empty shelves. I managed miraculously to find one lone copy in a Tower Records, just sitting on a shelf with the other three. I then had to badger my mother into buying it, because I hadn't enough cash. ("Do you really need this in hardcover? Can't you just wait until it's out in paperback or get it from the library?" Woman had no idea what she was talking about.)

OotP: By this time a number of my friends were into HP as well and we all reserved copies at the local Borders. We went early and they gave us numbered tickets. I was ecstatic that my number was 42. I'm that girl.

HBP: OMGJOSSWHEDONWILLYOUSIGNMYHARRYPOTTERBOOK?!
