OK, I will do a Battlestar ep write-up later in the day but for now, I want to talk about some BSG spoilers/rumors which are circulating around the net.

The rumor/spoiler in question being that Kara bites in 3.16.

My reaction?

I don’t know, confusion being the operative emotion.

Frankly, I’ll be really surprised if this happens, mainly because unless they make her a Cylon, death is problematic for BSG as there is no reversals as you could do in something like Buffy. And having Kara die permanently is certainly possible but seems a little extreme for RDM.

RDM likes to talk the talk about tough and hard and OMG!this show is so dark we are offing anyone.

But let’s look at his actions so far. The only characters he’s killed off permanently (unless they later turn out to be Cylons) are Billy, Ellen and Kat. All tertiary characters at best. Of course, it can all change and he can decide to be gutsy and off a major character, one of the leads (insofar as this show has leads), but as I said, I would be quite surprised.

But, let’s say it did happen.

What would I think? It’s actually a binary question. One is what I would feel emotionally, would it ruin my enjoyment of the show etc etc. And the other is a somewhat more objective one of whether the show would be harmed by Kara not being there, permanently.

I’ll tackle them both together because they are interrelated (and even the more objective one is biased, of course. If you think Kara is the only good thing about the show, of course you’ll think it will suck afterwards).

I think BSG is enough of an ensemble show that taking out anyone, with the possible exception of Adama, would still enable to show to be good, have interesting dynamics, etc. It’s not Buffy where if there is no Buffy, there is no show.

And I think my reaction is connected to that view of things, for me. I enjoy BSG immensely, but not on an emotional level at all (there are rare exceptions: Helo/Sharon, last weeks UB ep). It’s more of I find the concepts in it interesting, I find the situation and approach interesting, and yes, I find the characters interesting, but without being in love with them (contrasted with something like Farscape which always evokes a strong emotional reaction from me). So, as long as the stories are interesting, I don’t care who they kill off.

Now, I am not saying that people who enjoy BSG on an emotional level are inferior or my view is better or anything. I am just trying to explain my reaction in context of my relation to BSG (Actually, I prefer to have strong emotions for characters: that is why Farscape and Firefly are ranked above BSG for me. I find them not just interesting on an intellectual level but incredibly moving as well).

So? If Kara died? I’d be incredibly surprised but I’d still watch.
