To prep myself :D for Salaam Namaste coming out this weekend and because my copy of Parineeta is arriving this week, I am going to have a mini SAK festival. (For the record, Saif Ali Khan is a Bollywood actor who's been in a number of pretty forgetful flicks in the 90s and some really good ones in the 00s. He's my current second favorite Bolly actor (right behind Shahrukh Khan). He can do funny, intense and super charming. Plus, I think he's hot. I saw him in concert and he was quite appealing in the flesh as well (though I was too busy fixating on Shahrukh to hyperventilate over him).

So, my canditates for my little marathon. Btw, all these are recommended.

1 Dil Chahta Hai: I did a detailed write-up on this earlier. This was the movie that really introduced me to Bollywood. Apparently it's also the movie that got SAK noticed. This is a modern, urban tale of three best friends who've just graduated. SAK plays a charming, light-hearted flibbertigibbet who falls for every girl who crosses his path. Every time he believes it's for real. Then he meets the girl his parents want him to marry and falls for her. Problem: she has an anal-retentive boyfriend already. The movie focuses more on Aamir Khan's character and not Saif's, but he is charming, and floppy haired and irresistable in this flick.

2. Kal Ho Na Ho: Saif plays a sweet, New Yorker, wannabe player (but not really) best friend of hurt-by-life Preity Zinta. Saif and Preity and their perfect chemistry stole the movie from Shahrukh Khan (who plays a new neighbor who tries to arrange everyone's life and falls in love with Preity himself), and that's pretty frakking impressive! Shahrukh and Saif have great chemistry as well. The scene where Saif proposes to Preity, telling her he knows she doesn't love him but he is willing to wait made me weak in the knees.

3 Ek Hasina Thi: Charming? Attractive? Romantic material? Think again. In this really gritty and dark flick that is a complete change of pace for Saif, RGV's muse Urmilla's life spins horrifyingly out of control after she hooks up with Saif's entirely too-slick character and discovers criminals aren't the best partners. And prisons really suck.

4 Hum Tum: I adore this flick that is loosely inspired by "When Harry Met Sally." Saif and Rani Mukherjee play two people who are first antagonists, then friends, and then discover they are something more. I adore the scene where he breaks the glass in the bathroom, and the fake proposal scene. Saif won a National Award for this. Hey, I'd have given it to SRK for Swades this year, but I am glad he has one (even if I thought Parineeta or EHT would have made more sense).

5 Parineeta: My newest favorite Bolly movie, and the one that cemented my Saif love (the fact that you see him without his shirt and he has the nicest arms doesn't hurt). It's passionate and elegant and romantic and angsty and every good thing. He plays a spoiled, insecure offspring of a rich family who falls in love with his poor neighbor. So good.

In case anyone who has no idea who he is, there is a pic of him behind the cut (this is from the upcoming Salaam Namaste):

This is terrible of me, it has nothing to do with your post but as I scanned through my friends list, your icon jumped out. It's gorgeous!!!! Although that might be because I love Moulin Rouge. Admittedly, I am curious now and will have to see if they have Bollywood movies in Beijing but hesitate given that I really don't need any more obsessions.
