dangermousie: (Rome by alexandral)

So, all the squee about Rome on my flist made me go digging for other movie/TV productions dealing with the time period.

So I turned to my trusted friend, wikipedia.

In addition to reminding me of my historical crush on Germanicus and of my glee at the nasty barbs historians loved even back then (sample quote from Tacitus on Agrippa Postumus, the last child of the Agrippa we see in Rome: Though devoid of every good quality, he had been involved in no scandal.), I have also found that there has been, a few years previously, a British/Italian co-production Imperium: Augustus (warning, plot spoilers at the link) which I simply must find as it sounds deliciously melodramatic (Julia as angsty, noble heroine wronged by Tiberius and Augustus! Heh) and no more historically inaccurate than Rome.

Perhaps most importantly, my interest was whetted when I saw the picture of the actor who portrayed Iullus Antonius, son of Marc Antony and Fulvia, and Julia's most prominent lover (in this version he is her angsty star-crossed OTP).

(Not, it suffices to say, in his period get-up):

HELLLLLO.

Where do I get the DVD? :D

I think I have seen that one. It ran on a local tv station. And I have no memory of it other than the way Peter O'Toole looked in his getup.

BTW, I personally have a soft spot for the Attila two-parter, no matter how unrealistic it might be.

Oh, I hated that Attila two parter with a vengeance. It burns, it burns! Seriously :)

The Caesar one was good though...

Was it the bad acting or the history rape? :D

I was hypnotized by the pretty! I'm not responsible for my actions!

History rape more than bad acting but the acting was painful enough...

The pretty was excellent but he'd have to have been naked and oiled the whole time for me to overlook the horridness.

Yeah, the history rape was certainly painful. But I guess I was just so happy that for once somebody was willing to portray a less overused scenario or POV.

The pretty was excellent but he'd have to have been naked and oiled the whole time for me to overlook the horridness.

Heh :)

I would but I haven't even finished S1 yet. Keep getting distracted by dramas.

Imperium apparently was ahead of its time; the latest opinion on Julia was that she was more sinned against than sinning with regard to Augustus. (I just read a great biography of her, which more or less argues that A. knew all about the infidelity and moved against her when he needed a scapegoat...).

Yeah, I've heard that about Julia. Wouldn't surprise me about Augustus in the least: you don't get on top by genuinely believing in 'family values.' :)
