Oh, Loveholic.

I haven’t fallen so much, so hard, so fast in love with a drama since (if we don’t count Hanadan as it is still airing so no binging, or Snow Queen which I loved but am still waiting for DVDs) at least Kurosagi or My Girl, whichever I watched later, and that was months ago.

I guess nothing really works for me as much as an angsty romantic Korean drama. I might enjoy occasional ‘different’ dramas (Nobuta Wo Produce about friendship, Green Rose which is, love story or no, largely about revenge, or Magicians of Love which is madcap fun) but ultimately, in order for me to truly love it, to marathon it into late hours of the night, it has to be romantic angst.

Mind you, I am only an episode in, so my enthusiasm can change. I adored Chun-Hyang the first few eps but by the middle I got tired of endless back-and-forthing and have yet to finish it. But for now? Every time I even think of the drama, I feel like grinning and swooning, all at once. And I love the soundtrack. And the freeze-frame use. Actually, overall, it’s one of the prettiest dramas I’ve seen. I am just thinking of the images in the snow, when he goes looking for her because he is worried she isn’t home. It’s beautifully shot throughout, and I love the filters and the framing.

To get the most important thing out of the way first: Kang Ta, who plays our hero Kang Wook, is freaking gorgeous! In fact, he is so pretty that it’s the only drawback to the drama so far: sometimes I just get drawn in and end up spacing out just staring at him instead of following what is going in. And the leads in this one have scary levels of chemistry and there is an incredible amount of hot angsty staring.

KW is actually a huge reason I love this drama: he is quietly stoic and reserved but with all the passion (anger or romantic) boiling under the surface and that is so my kryptonite. EEEE.

But no drama will ever really be a huge favorite without me caring for the heroine as well, and here is where Yool Joo comes in. I adore her. How could I not love this drama when in so many ways it’s Gokusen, with Shin/Yankumi made explicit canon and seen through an angsty lens? JY doesn’t have the shiny bounciness of Yankumi (after all, it’s a serious drama), but she has a very feminine, open warmth around her (I have no idea how to phrase it). In a way, she is a mix of Yankumi and Michi from Majo No Jouken. She has the faint vulnerability of Michi and her spontaneity (one can see why KW or her prosecutor boyfriend fall for her), but she is no weakling. She is actually a good teacher. She is youthful but not childish. And very straightforward.

That is what I like about YJ. She is a good teacher and a strong woman, and quite competent. Teaching is something she has wanted to do for years and she doesn’t back down from challenges: she faces the class problem kids head-on the first day, she defends those same kids despite the Principal telling her to shut up, she comes back from a temporary feeling of defeat confident and stronger. And she is good at fighting.

I am very amused at the fact that it turns out she is renting a room from KW's grandmother. I was a model student but it would be my nightmare to live with a teacher.

Of course, in a manner of kdrama heroine, not all is rosy in her world. She is suffering from some mysterious condition where she faints if she gets too stressed out (oh, kdrama, never change). And you get the sense that while happy enough, satisfied enough with her job, her fiancé, she is not fully living up to her possibilities, to having something special in her life. She is content. She isn’t joyful. Oh yeah, the fiancé. He is quite a catch: he is a Prosecutor, and while he has a tendency to get bossy, actively tries to suppress it, and they do have fun together. Though how awesome is the foreshadowing where they have dinner and he tells her to stop talking about KW because he is the only thing she was talking about and he is jealous (she was talking about problems in school). I don’t really care for him, because as I said, bossy, but we’ll see.

But wait, oh drama heroine, this will all change. I love the scene where she is stressed so she is crumpling to the ground, fainting, but the jerky bf drove off in a huff and didn’t see it and KW carries her to the hospital. Awesome. And they walk home afterwards and there is a gradual truce, and she tells him about her condition and asks him if when she faints next time can he stay by her. And he grins that her he hopes she won't because she is heavy (OMG, it’s really nice to see KW cracking jokes) and there is sort of peace between them.

Guuuh, I love KW and his quietness. I love the scene where he and other kids are being threatened with expulsion and YJ goes into Yankumi-worthy defense mode and won't back down. But then she starts getting stressed and having almost that fit that she gets. And nobody realizes it but he does, and I love the way he watches her as she stumbles out, and I love how he makes this involuntary movement towards her.

But my favorite scene comes later. She is walking out of the school, and her class is actually cleaning the school (we used to do it in my school as well. Glad to see USSR is not the only one into that sort of thing. Actually, the school here, with uniforms, formal greetings for teachers, etc is really reminding me of a Soviet school). And one of the girls doesn’t like her so she empties the trash bucket on her (ugh, hazing) and YJ can’t do anything about it but smile and say she should be more careful, as the girl is all falsely ‘oooh, sorry, it slipped.’ And she just stands there, weary (it’s after her almost fit above) and starts removing gunk from her hair and then…then…then. KW comes up to her, and removes stuff from her hair, and puts his coat around her. In front of everybody. And the students are all screaming and so am I. I love all the protectiveness and awesomeness and the crazy levels of chemistry. She tried to protect him, so he will try to protect her.

And later she ends up taking a shower in the gym and she is crying from all the stress and I love the look on his face as he hears her. He totally wants to protect her. And he ends up looking for her because she isn’t home (I love that scene), and he finds her stumbling home, a little tipsy and it’s snowing and it’s such a gorgeous scene as they walk side by side and she is all upset and tells him how she always wanted to be a teacher and the students’ first love, and she doesn’t mean it romantically but the look he shoots her even though she doesn’t notice? Whoa. And then he tells her he’ll take her somewhere to cheer her up and he takes her on this hill and she is doing martial arts exercises and it’s just totally awesome and I love the shot of her being so fluid, and snow falling on her face, and him quietly watching her (with a look that should melt all the snow around her for yards).

He is clearly invested in her. When he goes for a ‘date’ with his (girl)friend (he is friends with her but she likes him), but he is so bored and he just keeps flashing to seeing her in the car with his fiancé? Yes, boy, you are hooooked. (And I love the brief pause on YJ’s face too). Or the scene later when she is looking for her engagement ring which she lost outside the house (it’s quite significant she didn’t even notice the fact until fiancé mentioned it) and he finds it for her and puts it on her finger? *sizzle sizzle sizzle*

Ultimately, YJ has a good life (and she thinks of a way to stop the hazing girl, and she is clearly slowly winning over the class). Kang Wook’s life, on the other hand? Not so rosy. The Gokusen comparison is once again obvious. KW is clearly a bright, bright guy. Case in point? His (girl)friend, whom I really really adore, a rarity in kdrama. Though I wish she’d go out with that guy who looks like Harry Potter (he is cute and crushing on her and we all know she is going to get nowhere as KW and JY are the OTP). She is a class monitor, she is smart, she is studying to go to college. But she indicates that before his father’s death, before he had to take a year off from school, KW was really a good student and better than her.

In fact, my liking for that drama morphed into love (and I squealed like a pig) when we found out that he was a Professor’s son, and his father died under mysterious circumstances and he took a year from school and now he is a bad student who rarely comes to class and hangs out with a gang. Because? OMG. I love kdrama angst.

In fact, we later find out that he lost both his parents on the same day, as we get a flashback to the day when his father got pushed into a car by some odd people and the little (adorably nerdy) KW was running after him and his mother collapsed on the ground. I have to say, the acting in this one is really good, because KW is very reserved and doesn’t talk much, but the scene where he is doing obeisances in front of his dead parents’ photos while his grandmother (whom he lives with) is cursing out his mother because she believes the woman caused the death of her son, and you see the look on KW’s eyes and the brief moment of freezing, is…GUUUH.

Because he loves his grandmother and they have a good relationship, but he also obviously loved his mother and to listen to this without being able to express his feelings for her must be incredibly spiritually wearying.

I wonder if part of the reason he is drawn to YJ is because with the deaths of his parents his emotional connections have been severed and it’s the first emotional contact he’s had with someone (his grandmother loves him but is not exactly nurturing) and when she stands up for him, it’s enormously significant to him? But of course, he is drawn to her from their first meeting. I have to say the way he looks at her throughout…*fans self*

But yes, his life is sort of a dead end. In a way, it’s as if he is trying to live down to the others’ expectations. Everyone in school thinks he is a gang troublemaker (the gang members with approval, everyone else with disdain) who is destined for absolutely nothing and has no future. There is this one teacher whom I totally hate (I know someone gets killed and my money is on him, but I think it’s my hopeful thinking clouding my judgment) who just keeps pushing and pushing into him that he is nothing, as if he is hoping to grind him down (in a way, the teacher finds it easier to deal with loud, simple bullies like the big fat kid what’s his name. But someone quiet and uncompromisingly his own like KW raises his hackles because he is so clearly outside his control).

Near the end of the ep, KW is called into the teachers’ lounge because his (girl)friend made him take her out dancing even though he had no interest and apparently it’s forbidden and even though the girl tries to explain that it’s her fault, that teacher won’t listen. And he keeps talking and talking to KW, standing much too close, about how he is nothing, and how his father died a mysterious death, huh? And he keeps hitting him in the face with a ruler (can they really do this stuff in Korean schools? No one seems to be too surprised) and KW just keeps staring at him, unflinching, and the teacher slaps him and goes off ranting more about his family and I just love that scene because you see how tightly KW is controlling himself but then he snaps and goes for the teacher (just as he snapped earlier when in the hallway the boy with glasses called him scum) and OMG, I cheered and then he turns on his heel and walks out of school and JY (who has been watching all this in mute horror) runs after him and finally manages to catch up with him, and tells him he should go back because otherwise that’s giving up and then…and then…and then, she stretches out her hand, for a handshake, and he grabs it, and pulls her close. EEEEEEEE! *dies* And the ep ends, and I am having trouble breathing.

Bascially, I just love this for its swoony intensity. And so far, it's moving at a good clip.

He is still a school student, right? Is this one the things "it is all right for teaches to love their students in THAT way if their love is true"? I can't stomach these things, I was thinking why but I don't know . I don't really mind the age gap, in fact I like the age gap as it adds to star-crossedness. May be because of having a daughter, I just see everything through the lens "what if that was MY daughter".

But your lovely write-ups make me want to see it anyways. :D

He's still a student, yes. Though if he skipped a year and he is in his last year of school, technically it's not a problem, I think.

A lot of the drama (the larger portion) takes place 5+ years after high school because she accidentally kills someone and erases it out of her mind and he takes the blame on himself and goes to jail for 5 years and then comes out and then there is angsty shippy goodness.

I don't think they are declaiming the rightness of their love for each other and society's evil restrictions. It's a lot more individual than that, I think.

I love the drama, but hey, I loved Forbidden Love (it's in my Top 5 jdramas) so take it for what you will...

Oh, this sounds good. Taking loved one's blame - so my thing. Thank you.

I don't think they are declaiming the rightness of their love for each other and society's evil restrictions. It's a lot more individual than that, I think.

This sounds good too, because "declaiming the rightness of their love for each other and society's evil restrictions" was the bit that irked me in "Forbidden love". IMHO these evil restrictions are there FOR A REASON. (sorry, enough of ranting)

Ranting is never a problem in this LJ (I rant all the time). I think what Forbidden Love was trying to say is that when love is pure, societal restrictions don't matter (teacher-student or some other kind). Hikaru and Michi couldn't go 'oh yeah, it's wrong but we can't help ourselves' because it would have sullied what they felt for each other. They were both rather unworldly after all.

I found FL interesting in one respect (well, more than one, but relating to the issue). Hikaru was 17, right? In most states in the US, 17 is way above the age of consent (e.g. in Maryland it's 14) so there is nothing they could do to Michi. It wouldn't be statutory rape because of the age, and for everything else they'd have to get Hikaru to testify (if e.g. he testified that she coerced him, it wouldn't matter what ages they were).

Sure, there would be problems when she was his teacher and he was her student (even if not legal, the school board would totally terminate her) but once she switched jobs the whole issue would be moot. So probably that is part of the reason why to me, while I did feel a great deal of uneasiness initially, ultimately the whole thing fell on the 'omg starcrossed' and not 'omg!ewww' side of the fence (and because I realyl bought their love and their relationship being that of equals). But then I don't have children or anything or am not even close to having any, nor am I in the education system in any capacity, so it's all rather abstract to me.

It does seem to be a motif in Asian dramas, the teacher-student stuff. Not just in Forbidden Love. There is Gokusen (where Shin's interest in Yankumi is made explicit at the end, though she doesn't see him that way), Sang-Doo (where true, he is a grown-up student) or the minor point in Chan-Hyung (where the character find out that a couple of years after they graduated, one of their classmates married their teacher) but Loveholic and Hello My Teacher and etc etc I wonder why it's more of an interest and less of a taboo there...

Oh, it didn't worry me how old Hikaru was. What worried me the most, I think, that the teacher is in position of responsibility for the pupils, and having sex with your pupil in the library and sleeping there (!!!) is as far from being a responsible person as it gets. If anything, Hikaru was more grown up then Michi (and you are right saying they were equals, for me she was terribly immature). I would not mind if she was having tortures of conscience or any thoughts about his future in that library. Then she could have made responsible choices - change her job , for example. Become independent and live together. But it seems that she was all over the place loosing her mind. So I guess I didn't like her that much after all.

But more then my feelings towards her, I really felt that the main "morale" of the story was that "in 10 years such a relationship will be a norm", and in some place this exact phrase gets mentioned by her friends repeatedly. I guess this was really not my way. :D Because it seems that in majority of cases 17-year olds have their emotions still in the stage of development and they are prone to influence by older people and if relationship teacher/pupil will be permitted this is going to be not for everyone's benefit.

It is not about age, as I said it is about responsibility and in a case of teachers, doctors, etc. they work with more vulnerable people and are in a position where they have a huge influence over these people. It is just nor fare to use this for their own benefit.

HEEE! You see - I ranted!!!

As I said before, I really don't mind the age gap as such, one of my favourite books was "Goodbye Again" by Françoise Sagan where the middle-aged woman falls in love with a very young guy.

It does seem to be a motif in Asian dramas, the teacher-student stuff

I notice that for many "forbidden" themes they probably have less censorship in Asia (and this is so strange because in some things they seem to have more censorship, like with sexual scenes). It seems that many of the topics that are sort of no-no in USA and UK shows, like love between siblings, are more common in Asian dramas. I like this actually, because it is sort of extreme and different. Western shows = plenty of sex , but some topics are FORBIDDEN. Asian shows = no sex, but there seems to be less of forbidden themes. INTERESTING!!

Re: Hikaru/Michi. I do think they both felt very trapped, Hikaru completely alienated and going off the rails with the pressure and loneliness and that creepy-creepy mother. I found Michi more unworldly and swept away into her feelings than immature. After all, if Hikaru's mom was OK with letting everything alone, nothing bad would have happened. At worse, Hikaru would have just transferred to another school and could still date Michi or what not. (Btw, OMG, his mother so freaked me out, with the incestuous vibe and the fact that she basically hired a girl to have sex with him. What struck me the most was not that she objected to him being in love with Michi because she was older/teacher/whatever, but because he was emotionally involved. Freaky scary woman).

It is just nor fare to use this for their own benefit.

Yeah, I agree with that in principle but in FL I got the sense that they loved each other equally, she wasn't just using him or he was trying to hook up with an older hottie or what not.

"in 10 years such a relationship will be a norm",

I really thought they meant any relationship where there is true love and consent. As I mentioned, if Japan had the same laws as US, Hikaru/Michi wouldn't have been a legal/jail issue. Yet people still (understandably) disapprove of teacher-student relationships over here, and if it's anything but fully consensual, she'd still get in trouble.

That's true. There is no nudity, almost no French kissing, etc etc. But where in a Western show will you get a mainstream movie about the forbidden love of twins (that MatsuJun movie that is coming out) that is more like 'ooooh pretty angst' than anything else? Fascinating.

I don't have much to comment about, but the drama is a very good watch and I'm glad you are really enjoying it! I really like the soundtrack too~ What you have to say is so interesting to read because I know what you're talknig about! xD

Thanks! And yeah, it's gorgeous (emotionally and visually). And I really want a copy of the soundtrack because it's so beautiful (but most kdramas have lovely soundtracks).

xD That's very true! Koreans sure know how to do their music~ I can't help but like all their songs, and you know the songs are really good when you start to get songs from the artists albums/singles. xD Clazziquai is the one that did it for me.

Wait, wait, so am I getting this right? Because if I am getting this correctly:

Loveholic = (Gokusen - madcap shenanigans) + (A Love to Kill - paralyzed brother) + (Majo no Jouken - Japanese location) + extra dose of forbidden love + angst+ time jump + KOREANS

Am I with you so far? Because seriously, if this is as good as I think this is, I need to get on board, soon.

Basically yes. Except I am not getting the A Love to Kill connection but am getting (Sang-Doo Let's Go to School - gigolo and daughters) connection instead.

And yeah, you are definitely getting it right.

Watchitwatchitwatchitwatchit.

I want someone to squee with.

It's awesome. And Kang Ta is unbearably pretty and quitly smouldering and there are kisses in the rain and intense looks and everything.

I just finished this episode. Seems really good so far. I really wish the quality of video from jdramas for this is better. The end was intense. I didn't want to watch the previews to spoil it. Great write up :) I'm really glad you recommended this! I shall *squee* with you. I really love KW quietness too. I think i really like that in male lead characters. That quietness and you can never tell what they are really thinking. I really loved the scene when he finds her ring and puts it on her finger. They have really great/intense chemistry. Sorry for the the babble lol. I can't watch anymore of this now. I have to finish Snow Queen...I already feel sad that it's going to be over :(
