Twenty minutes in, I really really like it.

I can't imagine meta-ing it in my usual hyper fashion (I mean, 'Pompey/Julia OTP 4evah! Get that hor Cordelia away from Julia's man!' just doesn't seem appropriate :D) but it's totally totally awesome.

Though I must be a lot more pervy than normal, because there is the notorious frontal nudity/sex scene and all I am thinking is 'She is sitting too high for it to be real sex. Come on, do they think the viewers are 10?'

I watched rome for a little while, but believe it or not, I though it was too violent for me. What can I say I like romance.

Nothing wrong with that :)

I actually love "chick" movies, thats one of the reasons I am such a big Sharon, Helo fan.

YAY!!! I'm glad you like it (I think actually that the most loving relationship on the show is between Vorenus and Pullo :P)

actually that the most loving relationship on the show is between Vorenus and Pullo

I am getting that idea.

Not that it is saying much.

Ah....Rome! I love it so. And yes, the OTP is Vorenus and Pullo. It's guy love. :D

I'm deathly scared that they will eventually kill off Pullo's girl Eirene/Irene. Probably have her die of some sickness just to make a historical point.

It's weird, I think even with their fucked up histories I think they came closer to creating some actually nice emotional moments between Vorenus and Pullo and their respective girls than they ever manged with any of the romances of the nobles. (with maybe some very minor exceptions, maybe)

Even two eps in, I am finding that the only emotional pull in the story for me is from Pullo and Vorenus. I think they are trying to be 'edgy and dark' with the real life characters. (Though they did open on the final scene of one of big marriage successes: Pompey and Julia. They were genuinely devoted to each other).

It's possible that Pompei might not be protrayed as heroic as you might like him, but I thought that the tragedy still came through, especially regarding his family (though there isn't a terrible amount of screentime dedicated to it).

I was kinda more surprised as Cicero. Now that guy totally can't catch a break characterization-wise on Rome.

Yeah, poor Cicero. That is what happens when you are played by the guy who played Mr. Collins on P&P :D

Yay! I thought so.

You are not a perv! You are just... detail-oriented. And that's so the type of thing I'd notice and complain about, too. :-D

Heee. seriously, we were like 'Is she making love to his bellybutton?'

I think Rome is excellent, though it does have some of the unsexyiest sex scenes I've ever seen. You'd think the Romans would have had softer lighting....

I also feel it gets a lot better after the first few episodes.

Yeah, it doesn't really get *fun* till the whole intrigue starts. Though personally I greatly prefer all episodes actually set *in Rome* over any of the episodes set somewhere else (like the Cleopatra ones).

I'll see...this is 12 eps, right?

Yepp, 12 episodes in season 1 and they want to do a second season. But they only want to do 2 seasons because, I think, they want to follow Pullo and Vorenus' story and if they carried on the show longer than that it wouldn't be realistic for them to still be around (if they for example went longer into Augustus' reign Pullo and Vorenus' probably would have died from old age by then).

To me there were some more ho-hummmm episodes in the middle which was "hokey, poking fun ways to insert Pullo and Vorenus into important events in history" that bugged me a bit (those are the parts where I think the show openly acknowledges that they aren't going to be 100% realistic no matter how gritty they might act otherwise).

Thanks for the info!

They do seem to be running through the years really fast.

I'm just sorta aware of Roman history and so at first I didn't realize just *how* fast they are chumming along. There is some very interesting Rome history discussion on TWOP going on regarding those things though (also talking about the validity of various characterizations, inconsistencies [for example historically Atia should already be dead I think]).

There are a lot of things that are rushed along. And a lot of things it almost feels like they felt they had to include them (like the Ceasar/Cleopatra thing) but they weren't terribly crazy about it.

Yeah, this is not the most accurate thing. But still enjoyable.

I think it will get better once they get past the need to explain everything to the audience and just establish their 'world' and tell the story. But yeah, I like it.

Though I want to tell them. People, if sex was that unsexy and unpleasant looking, no one would want to do it :)

You like Rome!!!!!

Yup! To be fair, I am predisposed to like anything with ancient history in it. (Btw, I did get that Polish mini-series, Quo Vadis, and I haven't watched all of it yet, but what I did see is very good).

I really love the little ways they tried to make Rome, the city, seem more alive. Like the random priests that walk around or the importance that religion has for the more lower class characters like Lucius and Titus.

True. It doesn't feel stagy at all.

Oh, and I don't know how hot you are for "Mal" from Firefly, but it seems he has a new tv show (even though it sounds pretty insane):

EEEEEEEE! I am so glad you like it!!! Because it also gets much much better as it goes along, with much ANGST of the ancient times (especially now at the start of season 2). They seemed to calm down on nudity...

Good.

And glad on nudity. It's just 'yeah, yeah, we get it, you are HBO. Now chill.'
