Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is currently burning holes in my bag. I am about midway through, and I am in love. I don't know why, but it really clicks. I keep imagining it transposed to a drama :)

The plot: Our narrator, 17 year old Bella, has just moved to a very small, rainy town in Washington State to live with her father as the novel opens (well, actually, she is about to breathe her last when the novel opens, but the rest of the story flashbacks. Seeing that there is a sequel, I imagine she survives). Bella is an ordinary enough 17 year old, attractive, a bit bookish, thankfully well-enough-put-together (no boring 'I don't fit in, woe' emo), pragmatic. Even if she is a bit too prone to dangerous accidents and can smell blood when most people can't. As a new girl, she generates quite a level of interest in the small, close-knit school. But as for herself, the person she is most intrigued by is Edward Cullen, a quiet boy who does not interract with anyone except his siblings and in fact glares the stare of hate at Bella when first they meet. Edward is gorgeous, smart, and has an awesome car. Sounds like a good crush object, right? Yes, except for one minor problem. Edward's a vampire.

Can we say angsty love? And danger? And a lot of rainy scenes? And lack of making out because too much closeness and the craving Edward gets won't be for sex? Yeah, I knew we could. This is such a fun book. I love the characters: Bella is a great protagonist, recognizable 17, with those butterflies in stomach but rather self assured and intelligent which is a welcome thing. Edward is suitably angsty and hot. All the secondary characters, from the small town classmates, to Charlie the Sheriff who is Bella's Dad, are fun. I guess it reminds me of a novel cross between Roswell and Buffy (Edward is a lot more like Max in Roswell than vampires in Buffy). It's a YA novel, not something I generally read, but it's awesome fun.

Try it.

In other 'awesome fiction' category, [livejournal.com profile] kitsune714 just wrote one of the best fics out there. Enough is a brief, gorgeous look in what happens to Hiroto and Nao after Tatta Hitotsu No Koi ends, and it's so in character, it hurts. Actually, even if you haven't seen Tattacoi, I rec it, as a gorgeously drawn story about long-distance relationship. So yeah. I rec it, rec it, rec it. Highly.

That's funny, I just read Twilight and New Moon over the past weeks.

Overall, I liked Twilight but like the commenter above me I expected it to be a bit darker. The tension between Edward and Bella was very intriguing and captivating, though. And I really liked the setting and all the supportive characters.
New Moon was a disappointment and not nearly as good as Twilight in my opinion. You should know that there is not much Edward in it. I hope that didn't spoil your fun but I think I would have been glad if someone had told me that, so I had known what to expect.

Thanks for the warning! I actually appreciate it (and boooo, Edward was my favorite part. Boooo!). Isn't this whole thing a trilogy, btw?

I think it would make a fun movie.
