OK, I really must change my LJ background. Just looking at it is making me depressed.

Anyway, on to the topic of this post.

The movie rec for the day is Bichunmoo, a period martial arts epic romance from South Korea. The story is set in Mongol-occupied China, where a Korean named Jin-Ha, who is a practitioner of a lethal and amazing martial art, falls in love with Sullie, an illegitimate daughter of a Mongol general. Their love is pure, strong, blah blah, blah, blah. Except it's also impossible and doomed and as Jin-Ha becomes a rebel leader and Sullie has to see her family and the army hunt the man she can't forget but can never have, there is plenty of love, and rebellion, and fights, and cool dancing, and more angst than you can shake a stick at.

So, why Bichunmoo? I'll be the first to admit it's not a perfect movie. I am not even sure if it's good. But I was definitely entertained when I first saw it (months ago) and even had to buy a copy of my very own. It's very melodramatic and if you want discussions about meaning of life, look elsewhere. Also, the DVD I had cut out the crucial 10 or so minutes so I was left floundering for a bit (be careful which DVD version you get). But it has a twisty plot, is swoonily romantic in that hopelessly school-girl, slightly silly, very earnest way and, most importantly, it's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

See proof.
