I seem to be in the minority of the fandom because I adore the second season. This episode is no exception, as I loved it.
First, and completely randomly, it was great to see Chief Tyrol again.
Now, on to the discussion. I love that BSG had the cojones to go into the abortion issue and to take the position it did. I am strongly pro-choice but in the situation they are, I would have taken the same decision Roslin did. Heck, they should count their blessings there aren't forced breeding programs. Society is a balance between individual freedoms and the good of the society as a whole and it's clear that when part of the calculus is the disappearance of the human race, individual freedoms will become secondary. But how clever of Baltar to use that issue to announce his candidacy (and I love Six clapping slowly when he does so. They surely are the most twisted political couple ever). I wonder if the data Baltar gave Roslin is accurate. But it doesn't matter either way, it's not as if Baltar cares for the survival of anyone other than Baltar.
In other ways, this ep was all about being in your proper place, doing what you do best. Kara, who sucks being a trainer or a CAG, finally gets back into the cockpit and she is brilliant (and fulfilled). Pegasus' commander goes back to his machines and he is good at it. And Lee? Lee, it appears, is good at command. And that makes sense, because despite Adama's trying to groom Kara for command in "Hand of God" when she is the one who came up with the plan, frankly, she isn't suited. To devise battle plans? Yes, she is good at that. But as a leader? I would HATE to have her as a leader. She hasn't changed even after shooting Apollo (and I love that, it would be as unrealistic as for Tigh to give up booze), and she rebels for the sake of rebelling. Apollo, OTOH, might not be as good a pilot as Kara but he is a consummate professional, and if he rebels it will be a proper mutiny for a really big reason, not just mouthing off for grouchiness' sake. Of course, now he went against a superior officer twice :)
I do love his being promoted and Adama making him Commander and the increduility on Lee's face and pride of Papadama's. One of my favorite scenes, and he does seem to be most qualified.
I also loved Lee and Dee together in the beginning. They are at ease with each other and happy enough and there is a lot to be said for an uncomplicated and un-angsty relationship. I guess I am fickle, but I love them together.
Lee's relationship with Kara is the opposite of easy and angst-free though. I love that he brings up the shooting (and then looks horrified), I love that he loses patience with her insubordination (they have fundamentally very different approaches to ther duties. In most ways, Lee is a lot more 'military' than Kara who is a gifted amatuer in her attitude), I love that at the end she congratulates him and he explains why he was so curt (because he saw her get away with stuff that cost him his career, almost, and his life). And I love that they shake hands and just keep holding each other's hands. And she asks him if they are OK and he retorts "do you have a brain?" Their relationship is beyond frakked-up, but they are, in most ways, the most important person in the world to the other (with tons on UST to boot) and whether they ever get together or not romantically will never change that. I wouldn't want to be a significant other of either of them for that reason.
