The anime in my "to watch" pile so far is:
Rurouni Kenshin (am working through it slowly): I like the well-developed characters, and the cool fights, and the period setting. It's also less angsty than the other four anime I've seen so far.
Marmalade Boy: All the love pentagons or whatever, this thing is like Bollywood in animated form, by all accounts. Besides this is supposed to be the quintessential shoujo (girl) anime so I want to see.
Last Exile: Not only is it scifi, that sounds amazing from the description, and with a cool character for me to crush on (Alex Row), but one of my anime gurus
crumpeteer really likes it.
RahXephon: Fighting mechas, scifi, Tolkienesque conception of music, messed-up love story, and more than one person recommending it made it a must-get.
Peacemaker Kurogane: Samurai, angst, fighting and
crumpeteer rec. Why not?
Cowboy Beebop: Everyone knows of that one.
Ayashi No Ceres: It's by the Fushigi Yuugi creator and it's the same genre and has bishounen. So why not?
I've seen and really liked so far: Trigun, Fushigi Yuugi, Escaflowne, Hana Yori Dango.
Any other recs?
I also realized that while I like things with star-crossed loverly angst, if the whole thing is purely modern relationship drama, it interests me less than something like Fushigi Yuugi which also had a complicated fantasy adventure plot and cool fights and so forth.
Also, I've just found out there is an anime called Peach Girl. Do you think she is Marmalade Boy's soulmate? Because Peach Marmalade? Yum.
I also found the following cover picture. from it. Mmmm, that boy goes straight to the point (and that girl has on more make-up than Joan Collins)!

Webpage on Peach Girl, a show I shall devoutly avoid. The heroine, Momo, has the horrid disfuguring trauma of being too tanned (the trauma of too much make-up, which to me is more pressing, is not mentioned). And the evilest, most covetous best friend who ever lived, the poor persecuted martyr that she is. And to keep the fact she likes Boy A from the horrid friend, she tells said friend she likes Boy B. And A and B both fall for her, of course. And there is more soap than in the entire Dove factory. The scary thing is, if they moved the action to the US and made a live-action version, this thing could be a teen soap hit. Hold me, someone.
