Friday Night Lights
Jan. 11th, 2007 01:33 pmSo, Friday Night Lights.
I am seeing this show pushed everywhere on my flist. Much as Veronica Mars was a year and a half ago, and we know how much I ended up falling for VM.
Should I? Should I?
I like football very little and know about it even less.
Is it something I'd like?
Is there angst and OTPs and pretty boys and cool girls and more angst?
Enlighten me.

Date: 2007-01-11 06:39 pm (UTC)There is angst, OTPs, and pretty boys galore. It's well written and incredibly acted. I just can't get into it because growing up in OK, I already LIVED it. Too many flashbacks.

Date: 2007-01-12 04:55 pm (UTC)You know, your posts on it actually finally made me check out Rome. I am watching first ep this weekend and let's see how it goes :)

Date: 2007-01-14 04:31 pm (UTC)And I hope you enjoy "Rome" - I will say that there aren't any romantic OTPs in it (for me, at any rate) although there is certainly a friendship one. (And I think the series got better around episode 4-5, so don't give up after the first two!)

Date: 2007-01-11 07:08 pm (UTC)The only drawback I have is that the show does not get fantastic ratings, and while it's been given a full season order, it's up in the air as to whether it will return next season (and if it doesn't my fannish heart will break into tiny, tiny pieces).
NBC has all the episodes online for streaming. The site's worked very well for me the 3 or 4 times I've used it to watch back eps of FNL and Heroes (much better than ABC for Grey's Anatomy). I know there are a few download communities out there too that might have the eps available.

I do not care for most sports. The only sports I demonstrate any interest in whatsoever include NCAA basketball, NBA basketball (sometimes), and soccer, especially when there are sweaty half-naked European men involved. It's not that I don't understand football, it's that I choose not to. But "Friday Night Lights"? IS MADE OF AWESOME.
I was channel-surfing one evening last fall and ended up falling on to the premiere of this show--all I knew is that it was about high school football in Texas. It's an ensemble cast and it's OH SO GOOD. It's got something for everyone. If you love OTPs, if you love het ships or slash ships or no ships at all...it's just that good. It's very character driven and the show itself is presented in a totally different way from most American one-hour dramas. It's shot in a very interesting way, with weird camera angles and filters and has an almost documentary-esque look about it. But let's get to why I love it for real: OTPs.
My absolute favorite character, the one I root for, has to be Matt Saracen, the shy, soft-spoken quarterback of the team who was catapulted into the position of QB1 after the big star of the team got horribly injured in a game. Matt reminds me so much of Hiroto from TattaKoi--his dad is in Iraq, he takes care of his grandmother who has Alzheimer's, he works at the local fast food place, he loves being on the team but has now been thrust into the spotlight and the pressure is on, he's crushing on the coach's daughter Julie who is about as awesome as he is because she is snarky and fun and loves foreign movies and rags on her dad...

LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE.
And then there is the kdrama-esque love triangle between Jason Street, the QB who was injured horribly in the first game, his girlfriend Lyla who is the head cheerleader, and his best friend, Tim Riggins, also on the team, who has a messed up home life and blames himself for Jason's injury but finds himself drawn to Lyla as Jason is in the hospital recovering...oh, and of course, my grown-up OTP, Coach Taylor (KYLE CHANDLER!) and his wife Tami (Julie's parents), who are multiple levels of awesome. Seriously, they're like everyone's mom and dad. And of course, there is the genuine, honest portrayal of the culture of Texas high school football, and really, it's just so good.
Oh, and then there is a little football every now and then, but thankfully, they have cheerleaders on the sidelines who look alternately sad and happy as the game progresses, so I don't have to actually understand what's going on.
Seriously, it's everything I know you'd love.

Date: 2007-01-12 07:04 am (UTC)Angst = CHECK
OTPs = There are OTPs everywhere if you know how to look. ;)
Pretty Boys = CHECK. XD
Cool Girls = Mm, will do. I love Julie, and I like Tyra fine.
More Angst = So so much angst. :p
I don't really know much abotu football either, apart from what I learned from eyeshield 21, but so far I'm enjoying FNL. Try it. If you don't like it, you can always scrap it, you know. :)

Date: 2007-01-12 04:52 pm (UTC)this has nothing to do with this particular post at all
Date: 2007-01-12 03:52 pm (UTC)but I found this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=j9nqKB7Es3E) while randomly surfing through youtube.com at like, one in the morning, and I swear, I have only watched it about a hundred times.
That is the kind of wrong that is absolutely right.
