Letters from Iwo Jima
Jan. 3rd, 2007 03:24 pmI really want to see Letters from Iwo Jima but I didn't have time to catch Flags of Our Fathers. Do you think LfIJ would work by itself? Or am I better off waiting for DVDs of them both so I can watch them together?
And does anyone know when it's getting a wide release?
Also, The Painted Veil. Yay or Nay?
And also, if I have no interest in the British Royal Family or Princess Di (ugh), is The Queen still worth watching?

Date: 2007-01-03 08:55 pm (UTC)ROFL. If I saw MatsuJun on the big screen, I think I just might die, so it's a good thing that is unlikely to happen.
Btw, did you see new HYD2 pics?

Date: 2007-01-03 09:05 pm (UTC)NO. I AM SO DEPRIVED. I can't believe it's starting this week, though! I am way psyched. TWO HOUR PREMIERE! And thank god, there are like five different subbing groups (including some of my favorites, SARS and Nya) who are going to be working on this.

Date: 2007-01-05 12:42 am (UTC)Oh my. The poor boy will get mobbed!
Heeeee.
I have to confess, the glee of having a dorama that is even partially set in my country is SCARY LEVELS OF AWESOME. It makes me feel as giddy as when Bollywood first made a movie in New York! I got spoiled now, because they made a number, but still...the glee is there, even if less. But this glee? Is undiluted. YES.

Date: 2007-01-03 11:54 pm (UTC)Caught The Queen this weekend... if you have no interest in the British royal family as celebrities, then yes, you'd enjoy it. The film is really an examination of the institution that is the monarchy -- how it interacts with the regular government, how it affects those people caught up in it, how it's viewed on the stage of public opinion. It's a political and character piece.
It does NOT paint Diana as a saint or a victim. Though nor does it make her seem like a bitch... it just preserves the fact that the royal family did not like her, while the public did, and what kind of friction that caused.
I liked it! But then, my family's British, and some of the conflicting attitudes in the film actually exist between some of my relatives. Plus I'm a bit fascinated by Queen Elizabeth.

Date: 2007-01-04 12:58 am (UTC)Horror! Fate worse than death! ;)
The Queen is sympathetic towards Elizabeth... or, well, I think it's better to say it's respectful, and truthful. It touches on opinions and views of hers that, while they're widely "understood" in England (like the fact she feels the abdication killed her father, or her strained relationship with Charles), have never been outright confirmed by the woman herself. So I'm willing to bet its portrayal of her is pretty much on the mark.
NO! No phone yet, goddamn. This is getting ridiculous.
Wanna give me your number again? I'm still in the middle of prep stuff, but I'd love to hang out after Friday afternoon...
