Hons and Rebels

dangermousieI am reading an absolutely brilliant, hilarious book I want to recommend: Jessica Mitford’s Hons and Rebels. It’s an autobiographical recounting of her growing up as one of the famous Mitford sisters, in that highly eccentric household, and ends with her involvement in the Spanish Civil War.
Considering that of the 6 Mitford sisters two (Pam and Deborah) married the upper crust (one became a dutchess), one (Unity) had a passionate crush on Hitler and shot herself when England declared war on Germany, one (Diana) married the head of the UK Nazi party with Goebbels as her best man, one (Nancy) was a very clever, very witty author of such hilarious novels as “Pursuit of Love” and “Love in a Cold Climate” and couldn’t stand fascists, and one (Jessica) was a staunch liberal who was a communist for a time, and eloped with her husband to be involved on the loyalist side in the Spanish Civil War, and after he husband was shot down in WWII, she ended up in the US, being an investigative journalist and a proponent of Civil Rights, those must have been some screwed-up family reunions (actually, Jessica indicated that she and Diana hadn’t talked “since Munich,” so probably not).
But basically, this book is utterly improbably hilarious and I love it. Go read it :P
