The upcoming Bollywood year is certainly going to be interesting. There’s some stuff that’s ‘never in my wildest dreams did I think that would happen’ and some ‘or my wildest nightmares’ and some frankly bizarre stuff in between. Let’s look at it, shall we.

In the ‘OMG, thank you thank you thank you’ category are three things that I totally wanted and never thought would happen (or tried not too hope too much).

What are they?

First and foremost, Lajjo. This thing hasn’t even started filming yet, and I am excited already. Whenever Aamir Khan makes another movie, it’s always super exciting, as he is notoriously picky, and ditto for Mani Ratnam, my favorite Indian director who doesn’t spoil us with too many movies. The two together? Perfectionist actor and perfectionist director? It’s a dream come true. Add in Kareena Kapoor who I totally want to see with Aamir and who was excellent in Ratnam’s previous Yuva. EEEEEE! And if that is not enough, the movie is an adaptation of some Indian work but the detailed plot of it sounds remarkably similar to one of my favorite novels: Jorge Amado’s Gabriela, Cloves and Cinnamon. I don’t care if the Indian author adapted it, borrowed it, whatever. The thought of seeing two of my favorite actors in an adaptation of mt favorite story, with the best Indian director today? EEEEE!

Jodha-Akbar. I’ve ranted and raved about it in my LJ for a while, so I’ll let it be. Let me just say that any period movie I am a sucker for, especially if it’s an epic-romance with horses and swords (even Taj Mahal directed by a hack director with no-name actors, made me happy. One of the best Bolly directors and two of the hottest stars? Hold me, someone).

Eklavya. Because after Parineeta I wanted so badly to see Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan do another movie together. So badly. And here it is. And the trailer looked SO good.

Then there are also ‘Not quite in the dream category, but still incredibly exciting.’

Salaam-e-Ishq. OK, first off, whoever thought to pair John Abraham and Vidya Balan? And to give them passionate angst? I love you. This is a very loose remake of Love Actually which is something I always thought Bollywood should do. And they did! And it’s star studded! And Juhi Chawla is back on screen! And Akshaye Khanna gets to romance and be urbanite flirty type! And Salman Khan gets to woo Priyanka Chopra! And it will be the first Govinda movie I’ll enjoy! And, the stories except for one, are different from LA so surprises are still there.

Baabul. Not only do I get to see Salman and Rani back together on screen, but in a twofer, we also have Rani hook up with John. And aaaaangst. Yay.

Saawarya Sanjay Leela Bhansali has another movie! People either passionately love SLB or think he is boring and overwrought. I am in the former category, as he is one of the very few directors I’ll watch anything by. It stars newcomers who I know nothing about but considering that I loved each one of his four movies with crazy love, I am excited.

Hrithik has signed on to do an arthouse type movie. If it works out? Yay.

And on Mani Ratnam news front, he has heard my desires and continues to work with Abhishek Bachchan as he should and I can’t wait for the upcoming Guru. (MR, you will spoil us with a movie a year!)

Shahrukh Khan is making another movie with Farah! Yay! I loved Main Hoon Na to a crazy extent.

And here are the WTF category Bolly stuff:

Not really dreadful but minorly confusing: Rakesh Roshan is planning a sequel to Krrish. I am not surprised but I am unhappy about the sequel bug in Bollywood. They never used to have any.

I am also puzzled by two things in regards to it. One, Hrithik is going to have a double role, as a hero and another villain. What, are they going to be twins separated at birth? And also, Vidya Balan has been cast as his leading lady. Now, I love Vidya. She is in my Top 5 current Bolly actresses. I think they’ll make an awesome movie couple (though they should never let her dance in the same frame as him and also, being in a RR movie isn’t so neat on the heroine as the whole thing will revolve around Hrithik). But. Unless they have Krrish go Batman and change gf with each film (which is incredibly unlikely in a Bolly movie), what happened to Priyanka? Or is this going to be Krrish’s offspring? And now he will have to avenge his father in turn? What? I am mildly upset either way because one of the things I love most about Bwood is the idea of this enternal unchanging love and happily ever after. They already sort of blew it up in Krrish, as Krrish’s parents’ marriage ended up in tragedy of her death (which ruined Koi Mil Gaya for me) and here? Grrrr. But we shall see, maybe it’ll be OK.

Chak De. I am sorry, not even SRK can get me enthused about a movie about a girls’ soccer team coach with no love interest. I don’t like sports movies and this one sounds sooooo dull. Considering SRK has only a few years left to play a romantic lead and considering he is probably going to be cutting down his film schedule due to his tv-show-hosting commitments, I am really annoyed that one of those opportunities is CD. Well, he’s got a knack for picking movies, so maybe he’ll surprise me.

The remake of Sholay, a.k.a. the most famous Bollywood movie ever. There is no way to explain this except for the fact that Ram Gopal Varma has an ego the size of Jupiter. Thankfully, due to copyright issues, he had to change so many things, maybe it won’t resemble it much. I still refuse to see it. As to Amitabh being Gabbar’s equivalent in this is just…I will charitably assume this was a moment of senility.

Aww, have faith in SRK. He won't disappoint. Hopefully. :P

True. If it was anyone else in that movie (even actors I love like Aamir) I wouldn't be interested at all. But SRK makes almost anything worth watching. Hopefully I'll be more excited when there will be more info. Because I am so not into sports movies. I didn't even care for Lagaan *gasp :D*

The Indian version of Lajjo sounded a bit less complex as the plot synopsis of the Gabriela book does (according to amazon.co.uk, anyway) but I'm hoping they take some interesting elements.. Some folks at Bollywhat had seen the stage version of Lajjo and said it was fairly short. Wonder how Mani will turn it into a full feature film. CANNAE WAIT, though. The roles seem so spot on for the two actors.

Juhi Chawla is back on screen! And Akshaye Khanna gets to romance and be urbanite flirty type!
My main reasons for looking forward to SEI, probably. Plus the Salman-Priyanka story sounds crazily awesome and the music will probably rock. Have you seen the website? The character profiles are a riot.

I wanna know who's SRK's leading lady in Farah's next.. If it's someone cool, I'll look forward to it majorly but if it's someone not-too-exciting, I'll have to wait and see.

Sholay remake? GRR.

I'm pretty curious about Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, the director of Bunty Aur Babli's next with Abhi-Preity. I liked their chemistry in Koffee with Karan and they seemed to act well together in KANK, and I *love* BaB, so should be cool.

Yeah, I love the website. Funny.

Re: JBJ. I know so little about it I am not sure what to expect.

I just read that Abhishek is going to play Hrithik's father in a film where Hrithik plays a double role... is it the same as this Krrish sequel? There can't be many films being made with Hrithik in a double role, can there?

I love that Vidya Balan is getting lots of roels. :)

Must be the same film. Odd. Poor Abhi. I know he didn't look as hot as hrithik in D2 but surely not old enough to be his father :P
