I am beginning to wonder:
What is the fascination with sibcest in Asian drama? Seriously. Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan are all large places so it’s not as if it’s hard to find a suitable mate not related to you.
Odd.
So far, I’ve been able to break it down into following categories, ranging from…not too bad to pretty off-the-wall.
I am in love with my sibling’s significant other
Usually this consists of a hot younger male sibling pining after the not-so-hot older sibling’s girl. If you are a male idol with the cheekbones of death, beware. Sad pining awaits you.
Examples include:
Magic Ring: Joe Cheng falls in love with the widow of his elder brother. Except she isn't so it's OK. Or something.
Love Scar: Jerry Yan is horrified to discover that his older brother’s fiancee is a girl he had a mad affair with years ago. Fortunately, he angsts beautifully.
Hanoi Bride: Lee Dong-Wook is horrified to discover that his older brother’s fiancee is a girl he had a mad affair with years ago. Fortunately, he angsts beautifully. Are you sensing a trend?
A Love to Kill: Rain is not horrified in the manner of Lee Dong-Wook and Jerry Yan. Perhaps because his whole plan is to get the woman he blames for his brother’s comatose state to fall in love with him as revenge. Of course, he falls for her himself and a lot of angst follows.
We always knew we weren’t siblings but we grew up under same roof, with same parental figures
Silence: Shen Shen and Zuo Jun grow up in ZJ’s house. ZJ keeps chasing after SS even though she only views him as a brother.
Step siblings in love
Devil Beside You: Mike He and Rainie Yang’s feelings blossom only after they find out they are set to become step-siblings. Even though Rainie acts like his sis in public…
Marmalade Boy: The OTP meet when his mother marries her father and vice versa (yes, their parents are Asian hippies). It gets an honorable mention in ‘we are siblings but there is loooove’ section as at one point the OTP believe they are half-siblings but decide to go on ahead with the lurve anyway.
We thought we were siblings but we aren’t. Phew. Now let’s neck
Autumn Tale: They thought they were siblings and find out they aren’t. So now they meet again and OTP!!!
Full blown ‘We are siblings but there is looooove’
Temptation of Wolves: All I know is I am rooting for the half-brother!
There is also She is my fake cousin who I hired but now love of My Girl :P
I am sure there is more, but I am too lazy to think :P
More examples?
OK, in my twdrama quest, I've gotten my hands on a twdrama so obscure, apparently, that drama wiki has no entry on it: Magical Love, with the leads being the female group S.H.E. and also some hot (if the cover doesn't lie) guys. It's also subbed (if rather creatively and inadequately).
Anyone know anything about it.
Also, Lavender. Yay or Nay? I have a copy with somewhat dodgy (though adequate enough) subs and before expending energy looking for better subs, is it worth it? I have to say the lead guy is drop-dead-gorgeous and the thing looks yummily angsty, but want to make sure...
Also, because much as I love kdramas, I can’t watch them for too long without missing my first true dorama love, Taiwanese dramas, I’ve been continuing with my watch of Magic Ring aka ‘the drama that does have a complicated plot but is really all about Joe Cheng looking scarily hot while angsting.’
The subtitles do continue to be rather pidgin but they do get the gist of what’s going on across and seeing as this is the only way I’d be able to follow the yummilicious angst, I won’t complain too much.
I have to say Juhang (JC’s character) is seriously like some sort of catnip just for me. I mean, the guy is totally dorama-awesome. He is a lawyer! Who works on cases not for money but because they grab his sense of justice! And whose father despises him for a screw-up loser! And who misses his brother very badly and cries or gets emo shouty over it! And he can be mischievious! And (in some rare happy event), so far he is awesomely dressed. I have yet to see an outfit that bugs me! I mean, how can you go wrong with a crisp white shirt and stone-washed jeans? The designer for this one comprehended the simple but apparently novel idea that if you have a tall, lanky guy with a good build and bone structure to die for, you just dress him simply and not work overtime to make him an eye-sore.
And last but not least,
Yeah, I am spamming :)
But.
But.
For those, like me, who are psyched for the Taiwanese live action adaptation of Hana Kimi (two eps have aired so far), good news!
I have no idea whether a sub group will pick it up (or has already) but someone has started subbing it on youtube! Go here.
I can’t wait to get home now and watch.
Yeah.
I admit that I find the heroine much less than awesome though. In fact, I find her so annoying that I keep wishing for Juhang to not fall for her (as I know he will eventually) but to go for the childhood friend instead. Girl is there on false pretences but doesn’t seem to be consumed by guilt. She did dive for the cell-phone that had his brother’s last message for Juhang, but she shouldn’t have dropped the damn thing in the first place. I think we are supposed to find her endearingly quirky, but I just find her a bit off. Oh well…hopefully I’ll like her better later on.

Date: 2006-11-30 11:56 pm (UTC)Seriously, my friends list is just crowded with people who slash the Brothers Winchester, Michael Scofield and his brother Lincoln, the brothers in Numb3rs, Simon/River and now even the damned Petrelli brothers in Heroes even though Nathan's married and seems straight and Peter is clearly straight.
The new trendy kink is incest and if it becomes mainstream, let society look forward to joyful inbreeding :P Sorry, didn't mean to rant - I really do not enjoy reading/watching incest in any form.
