dangermousieI think Lee Mongryong is one of the most awesome drama heroes ever.
Ever.
He is one of the very few who I'd think would be awesome to date in RL. Your average dorama hero is far far from that.
He is certainly one of the straightest and I don't mean it in a sexual orientation way. I mean it in the utterly straightforward, says what he means and does what he says kind of way. I love that. He is just utterly un-head-gamy and rather honorable.
I love that.
That is why the teacher's accusation that he raised his grades by cheating hits him so hard. If there is one thing he is completely incapable of, it's that.
And that is one of the many reasons I hate Chae-Rin, aka the other girl (who totally lookslike Charisma Carpenter). He tells her how he feels about her. He lays it all out. He also tells her that this is the last chance, and if she says no, that's fine but he won't ever bring it up again or be after her again. And when she rejects him, he takes it at face value. As Chun-Hyang tells him 'everything you feel, shows on your face.'
He is utterly forthright and once he told her that's it, he assumed that really was it. And he as awesome to her throughout, even if now as a friend. While for Chae-Rin it's all headgames and really a rebound of 'oh, he won't hurt me like the other ex.' And Chae-Rin just loves her head-games. She knows how he feels about Chun-Hyang and how CH feels about him (a blind mouse can see those facts) and she still plays the selfish games.
Because Mongryong is all boy and so can be thoughtless (though I love it that when he realizes he's been thoughtless, he always tries to remedy it). Just watch the scene with the cell-phone charm, where CR on purpose gets Mongryong give the charm that CH made to her. But OMG, how do I love that onces Mongryong finds out that this bothers Chun-Hyang, he does his utmost and gets it back (and he tells it's because CH is upset to Chae-Rin). And he gets her food and tries to show off that he got it back. He is all boy and I love it.
And there is the whole series of scenes at the skiing resort, where CR comes between the two repeatedly (OMG, the bit where she falls so Mongryong won't be able to see Chun-Hyang down the slope? HATE).
But I love that even during that, Mongryong worries about CH so. And the bit, where CR tells Mongryong she likes him (mind you, during this whole thing she knows Mongryong is married) and poor Chun-Hyang sees her kiss him (but she doesn't see he doesn't respond at all). OMG. And evil CR tells him CH wants to break up with him and Mongryong (reasonably, long story) believes her, even though she knows what the two woobies feel.
But it leads to that awesome break-up scene, where they break-up, even though they are totally misinterpreting each other and he does this whole unshed tears in his eyes thing (wake up, Chun-Hyang! The boy is in love with you!)
And then she gets sick but he doesn't know because evil CR doesn't pass on the message (leaving aside everything else, she doesn't seem to care what kind of trouble this is going to get Mongryong in, at home. Selfish witch). And when he finds out, he runs home.
And when she leaves the house for good, I love how he won't even look at her, but then he seizes the flimsiest pretext, the pen she forgot, to run after her and they have another one to die for scene.
And then there is the whole college thing and he finds out she didn't enroll after all. And onece again, he runs to find her at the bus station. OMG, how much do I love an earlier scene where he basically asks her to give him another chance once they are in college? OMG. And then he pulls her for a swoony hug because they are 'adults now, and that is what adults do.' OMG OMG OMG.
And I love how later(he thinks she re-enrolled) he waits in front of her classroom, practicing the greetings he will use, and freaks when he finds out she disappeared.
I love how he goes to that guy friend of CH and he begs for her address and the friend basically starts hitting him (because he is pissed off at Mongryong on CH's behalf) but Mongryong won't retaliate a bit and he just looks up at him, all beaten up, and asks if he is satisfied now, and can he please have the address? OMG OMG OMG.
And he runs to find her and they have these awesome painful scenes on her roof. Silly girl, are you blind? And then they go to the wedding of their teacher and he so wants to hang out with her and comes up with random excuses but she bolts because she assumes he is only doing it as a nice thing and is in love with Chae-Rin. Eeeek!
I love how he is always so attuned to her and so concerned whenever she is worried or unwell though he will totally conceal it. And they have so much fun together. I have to say, I really adore that this is yet another story of two young people forced into a marriage by circumstances, but here they are actually friends. Good friends. Just watch the scene much earlier when they are collecting cans, and they are playing and having way too much fun. And then he skips his meeting with CR to help her look for her wallet.
And I love it how she gets him to study hard for Uni (and I love that part of her motivation is seeing his father tuck Mongryong in. The Commissioner loves his wayward son. I love the Commissioner, though I think his wife is a snobby cow).
And I love that he shows up for her father's deathday once he finds out about it (with flowers no less) because he tells her that he couldn't be he kind of guy who would stay away (een though they had a fight right before). There is something amazingly right about Mongryong. I love how he listens to her talk about her dead father, and you can see him fall a little more in love with her. Of course, it leads to them being stuck in the room during the night together, which is both hot and funny :)
And he totally learns and pays attention to her. He buys her tennis shoes instead of sexy heels because she says those are the ones she wants but then he finds out it isn't, so he buys her pretty heels and I love how he has so much fun shopping for her because he loves giving her pleasure. And I love how he fights in the bar to protect her (and tells annoying producer guy he is her husband). I just love my alphas. Especially if they are quite so gorgeous. And when they get jealous (during R&J play, every time with CH's admirer. Whom I can't stand, ever since the bit with the wet paint).
Did I mention their wedding earlier? Where they walk through rows of students who think their teen marriage is the most romantic thing ever and then he dips her and she looks up at him and he grins and winks and tells her it's extra fanservice and leans in for a kiss and I die. And then evil CR ruins the moment. UGH. And Mongryong is all broody afterwards and I feel horrible for him (he is so young) but I love how CH shows up and soon enough they are laughing. They so fit.
I do like Chun-Hyang a lot. She is smart and funny (and jumps in right away about Mongryong spending the night at her place regardless of consequences to herself) and I love that we see the moment she really falls head over heels for Mongryong: when they are locked in together and he plays the piano. And I love that she tries to shake herself out of it. And I love how he is so oblivious to her falling for him. I also love how Mongryong tells Chun-Hyang everything before agreeing to marriage and CH tells him to tell other girl how he feels first.
I think selfishness is the cardinal sin in this drama. The OTP are completely unselfish about each other. Chae-Rin and the other guy only think about themselves though.
Two other random things: I love Chun-Hyang's guy friend, the one who sold the motorbike, which he loved, to get Da-Ni, the girl he is crushing on, some money she needed (she didn't ask for it). And the omake at the end, which start as thr traditional CH story but veer off into craziness are ROFL worthy.
This is really scattered and no idea if it makes much sense, but hey, here it is.
