Here is second part of meta on eps 15 and 16 of My Girl

OK, I left off with Yu-Rin preparing to tell the lie of her life in order to make Gong-Chan let go of her. I love how the only way GC will come to meet Sae-Hyun is when she tells him it concerns Yu-Rin. And then he looks betrayed when he walks in and sees the whole family. And when he is informed that they are here to meet the man who saved the real granddaughter, he snarks ‘Thanks, I’ll pass.’ Pissed off at the world Gong-Chan is totally awesome. And then Yu-Rin shows up and he tells her she doesn’t have to subject herself to this (OMG, protective!Gong-Chan….I swoon). But of course, Yu-Rin tells him she needs to be there and spins a complicated, elaborate, chillingly believable lie how she and her Dad knew about the real cousin all along but hid it because YR wanted a chance at a nice lifestyle. But then, GC fell in love with her so she decided to use him to stay in family permanently (OMG, the look on GC’s face! He looks like he is falling apart!) and so they went to Sae-Hyun with real cousin identity. And she strokes a few egos and it’s all so plausible (just like she has a plausible reason for why she reveals it all) and walks out.

FRELL.

And then, she is walking all set and stiff and she has this unseeing look on her face (because I bet she is going to see the look on Gong-Chan’s face for the rest of her life) and Gong-Chan runs after her, and he grabs her, and he is frantic, and he tells her he knows she is lying and he begs her to say it’s not true. And of course, she denies and walks away and seriously, I don’t even want to imagine what she is feeling.

And Gong-Chan is left frozen on the spot and he sort of leans against the wall because he doesn’t have strength to stand and his eyes are wet and he seriously looks like he is one step away from just losing it and screaming. And then you later see him sit on that staircase in the hotel and he still looks completely destroyed.

Later, he is home and he is looking at all those snow globes and I was expecting him to start smashing them :P

That night, Yu-Rin comes home wearily from somewhere and it’s snowing, and she hears someone say, quietly ‘Happy Birthday.’ IT’S GONG-CHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And they have this incredibly painful, incredible awesome (yes, I am overusing this word) conversation.

Because he tells her he knows she lied in the conference room. And even if she told the truth, he doesn’t care. He’ll just pretend she pulled another fib on him (like she did with the elevator or liar’s coin or whatever).

OMG. He loves her THAT MUCH.

And I have to mention when he wishes her happy birthday, she lashes out ‘Are you an idiot?’ and asks him whether he really believes it’s her birthday every time it snows. She is trying to sever, desperately, every last bit of their connection, but none of it is working until she tells him it’s agonizing for her to be with him (and he can see her hurt, and he probably thinks of how desperately she tried to get away).

[livejournal.com profile] hope_fuleigh wrote in her awesome meta that Yu-Rin needs someone to take care of her because no one ever has.

And that is much, much too true. Let me make a side note that Yu-Rin can and does take care of herself and has done so for years. But it doesn’t mean that she shouldn’t have someone to help her, to take care of her. Because she is capable, doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t help her share the burden.

And you know what? That is why Gong-Chan is so awesome. Because he really, really takes care of her, and he will put that above all, even above his own feelings. You know that scene in the bar with Jeong-Woo where JW points out that even if GC finds YR, YR might not want him or he will take YR away from him etc., and Gong-Chan replies that it doesn’t matter, all he wants is to know she is OK and he is worried she might have had a rough time of it. I love how Gong-Chan totally sees beneath the tough funny mask to the sweet, deprived girl within. It’s AWESOME.

Because OMG, he so lives up to that statement he made to Jeong-Woo. He tries and tries and tries to get her to admit her feelings and not deny herself out of feelings of guilt or duty or love for him, but finally, when she tells him it’s agonizing for her to be with him, and he can see how much this whole situation is tearing her apart, he goes away because he thinks it’s the best thing for her that he can do. He pretends to believe her lie (and how amazing is it that he didn’t believe her, that he just had so much faith in her, and in his feelings, OMG).

The look on his face though, when she tells him ‘let’s not run into each other until we die’…eeeeee! He’s fought so hard and he lost and he walks away quietly and I just bawl. And she goes in and her father says that the hotel magnate came and left you presents in your room, and she goes in and sees ALL the snow globes that he’s collected over the years, and the one that is a replica of the first one is lit up and she sort of wobbles…

And then we get the intercuts with Gong-Chan talking to JW about his pretending to believe her lie for her sake and YR talking about this to her friends.

ANGST.

And he is so defeated. It’s as if something in him has been permanently turned off.

He leaves for the airport to go to Japan, and after he left, evil Grandpa (HATE!) relents (for reasons I wrote up in Part I) and tells YR they have his blessings basically and YR thanks him and she is all ready to go to the airport but she figures out (because of something Aunt said) he went to 63 building first.

And yes, he is there. And he is remembering when they were there and she is in the taxi, trying to get there as fast as she can, and she is running, frantically, in her high heels and she gets up on the observation deck but she doesn’t see him and meanwhile, Gong-Chan has stepped into the elevator going down and the door closes but then opens and he looks up to see what’s going on and…it’s Yu-Rin!

I have to confess that at that point there was loud, prolonged, high-pitched screaming in my house.

And I love how he looks so startled, but unwilling to be too hopeful and he is sort of frozen and she tells him she doesn’t want to lie any more and the loooooook on his face and he tells her ‘You can’t be found out’ (a parallel to what she told him when he finally showed his love) and OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG she tells him she loves him, and she is smiling and teary at the same time and he just reaches and grabs her and pulls her into the elevator in this incredible hug.

And as the elevator starts going down, they close their eyes and lean in for a kiss, and it’s one of my fave dorama kisses ever because OMG so tender and hot and I am a sobby mess.

And then there is a delicious in-joke about who the real granddaughter really is, etc etc.

My Girl is amazing.

But before I conclude, I have to mention the sheer awesomeness of Jeong-Woo. It’s clear he still loves Yu-Rin and I don’t blame him for not telling GC when he saw her at the airport. He as good as does and warns GC that if he sees her first, he won’t tell GC.

And he buys flowers and goes to meet her and he is thinking that maybe this time, since GC is not around, she’ll finally see him. But of course, he comes there only to see GC and YR have their conversation after karaoke. And the LOOK on his face, and he quietly leaves the flowers and says something to the effect of he should have known.

And then he is in the office, late (in those two years, he actually became hard-working), and he is whispering to himself “Have you had enough?” and OMG he has that stuffed dog they won in his office and he is shuffling the papers blindly and he calls in the Secretary and says he is looking for a report of some sort because he just suddenly felt like working and she very gently points out that the report is right on his desk and he says he didn’t notice and that whole scene is heart-breaking.

But then, when he sees GC next he tells him to persevere because if he lost, he wants to lose to love against all odds otherwise he’ll lose face. And he won’t believe YR’s lie about her plotting and he actually goes and asks Grandpa to keep Gong-Chan and Yu-Rin’s love ‘intact’ (poor GC and YR, how very Gift of the Magi). He is totally AWESOME.

Sae-Hyun, not awesome. Yeah, she tells Grandpa he should let them hook up. Too little too late. Hate her. And earlier, she couldn’t bear that GC was so decent to her because it makes her feel worse, so when GC says YR is not his past she retorts ‘she isn’t your future, either.’

Gosh, hate her. I love that GC looks like he wants to wring her neck when he finds out she was the one that spilled the story.

Anyway, in conclusion, Gong-Chan/Yu-Rin=one of my all time favorite OTPs (by the middle, I was sometimes waffly on who I liked better, GC or JW but by the end, I was all about GC) , Jeong-Woo is totally awesome, GC’s family is insane, and Sae-Hyun should get run over by a bus. And I need fanfic.

Don't you hate that Sae-Hyun tries to redeem herself only after everyone else's life has been rruined? Booooo, Kim Sae-Hyun! I'm so glad you finished the series, because it was oh so difficult for me to hold in all my knowledge about the OTP ANGST in the last few episodes and not spill it all in a comment on one of your meta posts. :) I still love Jeong-Woo, even though I am all about the Gong-Chan/Yu-Rin. One of my favorite sequences with them has to be when he's found her again after two years, and he goes kind of insane, cutting his credit cards, following her around, refusing to leave...oh, it's just genius, because in all the previous episodes, he's so controlled and responsible, and now, god, LOOK WHAT YU-RIN MADE HIM BECOME. I mean, look at how many snow globes he owns now! And I love how the whole series ended too; I had loved "Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang", and you should've heard me scream when they did the reveal about who the cousin was. :)

And I know you're looking for fanfic, and I'm happy to say I can point you in the right direction.

No More What-Ifs, a Jeong-Woo drabble on regret and destiny.

If you've got [livejournal.com profile] obakesan friended, you can also find a terrific double drabble entitled Great Below, which fits nicely into the drama timeline during the two years that Gong-Chan was looking for Yu-Rin.

Ooooh, thank you for the links! I have friended obakesan because I really want to read that fic!

I know, I just love that. It's like he's been proper and dutiful and everything all his life. He's the responsible one and JW is the cut-up but not any more. That bit when he tears his credit-cards and says something to the effect that he now has no money so she has to drive him is just GUUUUUUH. And he basically guilts her into buying him a meal. I mean, the guy is so DETERMINED and...OK, I better stop before I turn into mush.

It's interesting, because he is generally so dutiful and will sacrifice a lot to keep those he lvoes happy, but once he sets his mind on something? Look out. And the thing is, he is still controlled, but in a very different way. Ohhhh.

But seriously, I must be very unfilial, because I don't care that Grandpa forgave them. If I were either YR or GC, I'd still feel really weird living in that house. (Btw, that whole scene in 14 with GC sobbing on his knees and grandpa not saying anything? I mean, come on. Maybe I'd spoil my offspring or something but that was just unforgivable...)

Don't you hate that Sae-Hyun tries to redeem herself only after everyone else's life has been rruined?

I know. Talk about not enough. She ditched GC and then when after she came back the relationship didn't work out, she still got her pound of flesh: he had 2+ years of sheer misery because of her. Ugh.

look at how many snow globes he owns now!

It must have been a pain to transport them all the YR's house. I keep wondering...did he walk in with a giant suitcase or what?
