I don't care much about Oscars, but I am interested in Best Foreign Picture category, if for nothing else but for supplementing my viewing list. So I went hunting for 2006 submissions (each country which wants picks one and Academy narrows it to 5 that are nommed). Here's the full list: http://www.thefilmexperience.net/Awards/2006/foreignatoe.html
Hmmmm, apparently The King and the Clown is South Korea's official entrant into the 'Best Foreign Picture' Oscar category. Since Canada's is Water, and India's is Rang De Basanti (YESSSSS! I love that movie with an unholy love) that means I'd have seen at least three out of the seven billion ones submitted. I am pretty comfy about Water getting in though no idea about the other two. I doubt either of them will make it but hope they do because then they would get arthouse releases and shallow moi wants to see them on big screen in mainstream theaters. (Also, acording to the site TK&TC was banned in China because of the homosexuality thing. Interesting.)
Other movies I want to see are Forever Flows, a Bangladeshi movie (I've never seen one) about a sex worker, Bolivia's American Visa about a Prof. who is denied a visa and turns to crime and love of a hooker (can you say 30s type movie?), Chile's En La Cama about one night in the life of two strangers (because I like the concept), Croatia's Libertas because it's a period piece, Hong Kong's The Banquet (I did a picspam on it earlier. Losely based on Hamlet and with Daniel Wu and Zhang Ziyi, how can you miss?), Kazakhstan's Nomad (because it's a period epic AND a Kazakh movie AND it stars American actors which is bizarre and neat), Kyrgyzstan's The Wedding Chest (come on, it's about a man who returns to his mountain village with his French gilrfriend in tow), Netherlands' Zwardboek (about WWII Jewish resistance fighter), Peru's Maidenusa (cross-cultural love sounds yum), Philippines' The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveras (gay coming of age movie! From Phillipines!), Poland's Retrieval (teen boxer tries to support his Ukrainian gf), Russia's 9th Company because it's Russian (about the war in Afghanistan), Taiwan's Blue Cha Cha (hey, it's Taiwanese!), and Thailand's Ahimsa (a lowlife in contemporary Thailand is followed by a mysterious man in red, sounds wacky).
Good thing is, if all of these are submitted, they will have subs,
Oh, and I don't want to forget!HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
scottishlass!!!!
