Jaan-e-Mann: Bollywood goes Baroque
Oct. 26th, 2006 04:44 pmToday's pic-spam are stills from Jaan-e-Mann, a Bollywood movie that opened last week, starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta. Yes, it's the love triangle so beloved of Bollywood. However, it's also apparently a bit of a tongue-in-cheek, phantasmagoric fantasy, with some surreal imagery thrown in. And huge points to Salman Khan, the wild child of Bollywood, to be so willing to poke fun at his persona and image. I was going to post it last week and had the images ready and everything, but then it slipped my mind. Oh well, better late than never.
Salman plays a narcissistic, immature, big-headed actor-wannabe failure, who, through a crazy twist of events, ends up helping the socially awkward Akshay Kumar woo his ex-wife (and the mother of his child!!!) played by Preity Zinta. And he grows up in the process, too. Mix in crazy hijinks and angst (mmmmm, crying Salman=HOT) and we get the movie in a nutshell.
I am planning to see this within the week, if it's still playing. Any takers? It doesn't look like any other Bolly movie so far, visually. And Preity and Salman always have rocking chemistry (this is their third movie together and I really hope they finally end up together in this one), and, if you are still not convinced? How can you not want to see the movie where someone can really put something like the following in his review "Anupam Kher is funny as the midget" and mean it. (Some IMDB reviewer). Come on!
My favorite still from the movie. Salman Khan and Preity Zinta:

Larger Version:

Preity and Salman when they were mushy:

Preity:

Salman. I just love this weirdly surreal image:

How very Gene Kelly:

Akshay, Preity and something that looks like a Busby Berkley set:

Salman can read!!!

And angst:

No idea but it looks scary:

Salman in NY:

'Daaaaance with me...'

Awwww:

Seriously, this looks like s 30s musical:

Preity's house seems to have a quick turn-over:

Akshay Kumar, being business-like:

Salman Khan:

Western? Meet Ali Baba:

It looks like Salman has loved and lost yet again. Or does it?

Salman and Akshay:

Akshay woos Preity:

I don't even want to know:

Akshay doing Tai-Chi:

Hellllloooooo, Indian Elvis:

Toreadors?

And we close on a romantic note:

Date: 2006-10-26 09:18 pm (UTC)Still waiting for Salman/Rani and Baabul.
BTW? I really enjoyed Kank, to my own surprise! I'm not sure if I'm 100% down with the story, but I was entertained. All the fun drama scenes rather made it worthwhile.

I think you called on my cell, but I was probably (always) asleep. "Asleep" has been my constant state of being recently. But I will get out of bed for Bollywood.

Date: 2006-10-27 12:18 pm (UTC)Roffle. I'm pretty sure I'm going to LOVE Sallu in this movie. He & Akshay look awesome in every still. And they're sure to be hilarious. And Preity looks pretty. *insert usual angst about waiting for DVD*
Akshay doing Tai-Chi
Well, it's not far from his weapon of choice, which is karate or something.
Also, man this year's been full of interesting Bollywood projects. Wonder if 2007 can top it.

Date: 2006-10-27 09:38 pm (UTC)2006 still has some really cool releases coming up, like Mani Ratnam's Guru with Abhishek and Aishwarya. 2007 has some curious releases (Salaam-E-Ishq, Eklavya!!) but most are coming out in early 07 so I don't know what the rest of the year will look like.
