So far this year, I haven't seen any extraordinary movies, and few that I really liked.

Here's my list for the year (in order from most to least) so far:

1. House of Flying Daggers: beautiful and moving
2. Bride & Prejudice: Bollywood-lite and Austin-lite but rather fun. And even Martin Henderson's Darcy won me over by the end.
3. Fever Pitch: sweet and funny
4. Hitchhiker's Guide: pointless but amusing
5. Dear Frankie: well written and well acted but ultimately going nowhere
6. Kung Fu Hustle: some amazing moments, but overall a 2 hour cartoon
7. Sahara: mindless but there are worse ways to waste $
8. Robots: see above. Only with no cute men to compensate.
9. Sin City: dreadful

Just for comparison, here are my last year's Top 10 (with those picks, I am clearly not an Academy member):

1 Hotel Rwanda: so amazing. I did see it this year, but it's last year's movie so goes into this list
2 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: most inventive and romantic movie ever made.
3 Before Sunset: even better than Before Sunrise. And shows that a movie with no kissing can be swoonily romantic.
4 The Aviator: I loved the visual style, and the fascinating central character.
5 Phantom of the Opera: Emotional feast
6 Finding Neverland: I sobbed for half an hour (Yeah, I know it's a better movie than POTO, mut I liked POTO better)
7 Stage Beauty: I love intelligent, witty period movies and this one is.
8 The Incredibles: come on, have you seen it?
9. Spiderman 2: so good. So goooooood.
10. ETA: Collateral: brilliant

Threeway-tie for a honorable mention:
(tie) Troy: cheesy but loads of fun. And Brad Pitt: rowr!
(tie) Shaolin Soccer: so funny.
(tie) Ocean's 12: The plot makes no sense, but who cares: this is too much fun!

I haven't seen any of the movies you list for this year...Last year, though! I agree with you on Eternal Sunshine - that movie is genius. Loved the way The Aviator and Phantom were filmed, loved Neverland generally (I sob every single time I watch it), totally enjoyed Spiderman and Troy, and let's face it - Ocean's 12? Is just hot. (*cringe* In the non-Paris Hilton sense.) And now there's so much to anticipate this year, too.

POTO on DVD Tuesday! I'm excited to be able to watch it more closely at home.

Oh, I didn't realize POTO was going to be on DVD this week. I know some people hated it *waves to [livejournal.com profile] katranna but I loved it and can't wait to get a copy.

Well, I'm in the middle. I love the stage show, so I had some issues with the film and some of the acting/singing - but, I still thorougly enjoyed it and am going to be one of the first ones at the store tomorrow! ;)

Whooo House of Flying Daggers, one of the best movies ever! I've only seen two of the movies on your this year list (Sin City, which I loved). I saw almost all of the ones on your list from last year. Eternal Sunshine, POTO, The Incredibles, and Finding Neverland are some of my favorite movies.

I never saw Bride and P in the movie theaters, just pre-ordered it on Amazon. Some things, you just know you're going to want to own...

It is very very cute (though not as good as a full-blown BW). Lip-sunching is really off though.

Is very very good. Sorta like Bollywood with better fights.

Have you seen Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon/Iron Monkey/Hero? Is it better than any or all of them?

I'll probably end up buying the movie on DVD.

It's better than Hero and Iron Monkey (IMO) but not as good as CTHD. You could get cheap cheap copies on ebay.

I'll probably settle for the real thing though, in the end.

Ah, I liked Hero, so if it's better than that, I'm happy! :)
