I finally managed to catch up with my TV for this season backlog and watched 3.1 of Supernatural: ‘In my time of dying.’
Wow. So good. I am in love with this show. I still want to finally watch an ep of it on TV and not on youtube, so I guess it means I’ll have to catch up with 3.2 and 3.3 before Thursday. Ahhh, the hardship.
And SPN continues to own me. Not as much as BSG, but certainly more than Veronica Mars lately. I guess I like my angst with a side of angst.
Dean makes the prettiest near-dead person I’ve ever seen. Really.
OK, moving on.
This episode really is all about family and the bonds and sacrifices and all that. Granted, the whole show is really about this: the family business, the family dysfunction, the family revenge. But this is so much more so.
We see Sam face down the demon-possessed trucker (how can you not love SPN? Where else can you use the phrase ‘demon possessed trucker?’) even though he is outgunned and in severe need of medical help himself, to protect his father and brother.
We see Dean literally argue with Death and his reason? He wants to protect his family. If he goes, he’s afraid they will die. And I love how he brings in Sam, and wanting to protect Sam, as a last resort.
And we have John. Oh John. You made me cry. Granted, I have plenty of issues with you still (hello, horrible upbringing for the kiddies) but oh boy. He pretty much conclusively proved that when push comes to shove, his family is more important than revenge, than his life, than anything. And the thing that really proves how much he loves Dean? Is that he let the demon kill him. Dying for Dean? Yeah, big deal but not half so big as his offering his life to his nemesis, something he’s put everything on hold for hunting, to bring his son back. Wow.
But if Dean finds out that is what he did (what DID John whisper into his ear? Couldn’t have been that because Dean looks shocked when John dies), how could Dean live with it? Dean already feels unworthy (he felt horrible for that random stranger in Faith, how much worse with his own father sacrificing his life for Dean). And Reaper is right, Dean is tired and he wants to rest and wow, this is going to make it so much worse.
But the thing is, if he finds out (when he finds out, I should say. This show loves its angst), the quest for the demon will become just as personal for him as it is for Sam and was for John. Because John? Into it because Demon killed his wife. Sam? Because demon killed his gf. But you get the sense that for Dean, he is into it because Sam and John are and he’s the caretaker. But now, it’s bitterly, bitterly personal.
How much did I love that Sam and Dean could communicate through Ouija. Awww. But the thing that killed me was when John finally told Dean that he was proud of him, and the look on Dean’s face, because he waited to hear this all his life, and his heart-breakingly questioning ‘Is it really you saying this?’ and John saying that he is sorry he made Dean grow too fast and should have taken care of him. I think it a way, this is even more important thing John did for Dean than bringing him back.
Yeah. I love this show.
Also saw The Departed last night. A good movie and I can pretend it’s some bizarre fanfic AU of Internal Affairs. I still prefer the fluid grace and the gorgeous restraint and understatement of IA. I was amused at the changed ending. I guess IA was too bleak even for Scorcese. I am curious if Matt Damon will suffer from the ‘Andy Lau curse’ in my eyes. Ever since IA, I’ve never been able to watch AL in anything without remembering him in IA and my hate for that character sort of spilled over into every other character he played, however innocuous. No one destroys Tony Leung’s life without paying for it :P Since I don’t remember last time Damon played a woobie since Good Will Hunting that’s probably not a problem (ooooh, now I am remembering self and BFF crushing a bit on Damon in college as a result of GWH. I feel old).
Trailers were a mixed bunch. There was some kind of documentary on Dixie Chicks and how people wouldn’t buy their stuff after their Bush remarks. Whatever one’s feelings on Bush, the documentary is made for eye rolling. Seriously. Cry me a river. Of beer. Flags of Our Fathers looks good in itself, but the voice over seems sappy and preachy and cringe-worthy and reminds me of Cinderella Man which was the biggest bunch of sentimental tripe in forever. Blood Diamond looked really cool (speaking of Leonardo), and seems a movie right after my own heart, what with desperate action, and shady cynical adventurers rediscovering their inner decency, and beautiful people falling for each other, and a bit of bleeding-heart liberalism. Yum. It’s the director of Last Samurai (which I loved and am not afraid to admit it), so it seems his niche is having white men rediscover their soul in exotic locations. I am all for it, if the men in question are hot. And then there was 300 which is about the Battle of Thermopylae in a fantasy AU. On speed. It looks completely ahistorical, and yet I am so there. I mean, come on. Gerard Butler. David Wenham. Great graphics, Bloody battles. FRELLING SPARTANS! I am there opening day.
My doramas stack is getting away from me. I still need to catch up on eps 13 and 14 of Tokyo Juliet and 6(!!!) eps of Smiling Pasta. Not to mention all the Silence eps. And I am still watching Sang-Doo and Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake. And in doramas not in progress, I plan to start Kurosagi ASAP. But hey, because I am totally rational, I am also going to start Tatta Hitotsu no Koi. I usually don’t start watching doramas when only one ep is out, but then
winterspel posted some pics. And I want to see Kame in a dorama to see what the fuss is about. And most importantly, it’s an angsty, possibly doomed, star-crossed lovers love story. I mean, come on! I am there. It’s the poor guy rich girl thing that is the staple of Bollywood and doramas. Let’s see if anyone develops amnesia.
Seriously, you have to check it out. I stole some caps from
winterspel to entice (don’t worry saved on my own server). She has a whole cornucopia of them here and here.

Hmmm, shall I be converted toThe Dark Side KAT-TUN? Pardon me, KT-TUN? Naaaaaah, but the doramas are LOVE. I would totally lock Kame up in my basement. But I don’t have one. And Mr. Mousie might not like it. Still, how can I resist? He is prettier than I am. Probably weighs less, too, which is sort of scary, because I think I am attracted to a guy I could fit into my carry-on.

Aww, what's wrong with Gokusen 2? I watched it recently, and it was good, even if I did really miss Shin.
Actually, the Kame drama I would recommend most would be Nobuta wo Produce, which was...a lot better than the premise led me to expect, and a lot less fluffy too. Or failing that, there's a movie called Yuuki which came out recently, and just about killed me with angst, but was really good. But again, they're a lot less about romance than about friendship, so I don't know if you'd like them or not.

Jyu Oh Sei
What is this? *perks ears*
I loved Oguri Shun in HYD and Gokusen.

Date: 2006-10-18 11:47 pm (UTC)Jyu Oh Sei is an anime series that came out last year. Oguri Shun voices one of the main characters, who is really amazingly cool. I recommend watching it, if you ever feel like taking a break from dramas. (It should be easy to download, but if you can't find it, I'd be happy to share.) It's only 11 episodes, and it's very interesting, and even if some of the characters are kind of annoying, there's enough good stuff to make up for it.

Date: 2006-10-18 04:52 pm (UTC)I love Kurosagi quite a lot (despite the fact that I still haven't finished the last three episodes, but that is completely irrelevant), and I think a good portion of my love for it was because the two main characters were also in Nobuta wo Produce (and were *my* non-canon OTP), but there is so much angstiness and repression, it's so great. And, there's also the fact that Yamashita Tomohisa is the absolute KING of Angsty Looks of Intense Emotions.

generally, I tend not to go for guys who have more awesome hair than I do, but that would leave out every single Asian star out, so I have to make exceptions :)
I feel like doing a preparatory Kurosagi picspam.

You should check out Sapuri and Nobuta Wo Produce for some more adorable Kame. You should really check out Sapuri, it is my favorite dorama.
I adored Kurosagi, and I honestly felt the ending was more then right for the characters and it is my personal belief there will be another series. And it is worth it for Yamapi and all of his adorable expressions. It is awesome, you should watch.
If you need anymore persuading over to The Dark Side, when my laptop gets back from tech support I shall win you over...

I have NwP so I shall get to it at some point. My doramas list is psycho huge and I just got in a whole new batch of anime. Considering I am behind on all three American shows I watch: BSG, Veronica Mars and Supernatural, I should just probably give up on rl and chain self to TV.
I do want to watch Sapuri. When I was in Japan a month or so back, they had posters for it all over the place which was pretty cool.

Date: 2006-10-18 09:46 pm (UTC)The Dark SideKAT-TUN? Pardon me, KT-TUN? Naaaaaah, but the doramas are LOVE.See, that's part of the Johnny's Entertainment master plan. They attack from all angles--if the music won't get you, they go the drama route. That's how they got me. I had been avoiding Johnny's on principle, but then: "Gokusen". And consequently, Arashi. Thank you, MatsuJun. And then the older JE guys suckered me in via drama as well, i.e., Tomoya Nagase's drama "Mukodono" and "Ikebukoro West Gate Park".
I love Kame, but I'm eager to see how he'll do as a romantic leading man. I've liked his other dramas so far (though I'm still working on finishing "Sapuri", which, come to think of it, is a nice segue for him into playing leading roles in romance dramas) and he does emo hotness very, very well. Also, his haircut makes him look like Ryu in "Gokusen 2" and I have a very unhealthy and inappropriate fascination for Kame and Jin in their school uniforms.
You may have heard me rave about "Tatta Hitotsu no Koi", despite the fact that I've only seen one episode (I mean, there only is one episode so far). It's just so old-fashioned, from the music, to the plot. I mean...voice-overs! Kame, with dirt smudged on his face! Heavy-handed discussions with Nao about her health! Kame's adorable little brother, Ren, who has a wheel-chair! This has all the makings of a really good, terribly angsty, proper romance jdrama, and I haven't seen a good, serious romance jdrama about forbidden love since...since "Kamisama mou sukoshi dake".
This drama has the potential for addictive awesomeness. It sounds almost like a kdrama, actually...but in Japanese. God, I can't wait to see the rest.
