Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake is scarily addictive. It has replaced Forbidden Love as my favorite jdorama (Hana Yori Dango had to move to third, alas). In fact, I am so madly in love with it, I got up extra early so I could watch some before I had to head out, and if you know me, you know I never get up early. And thus I finished episode 8.

Yes.

I have also finally figured what the purpose and point of KMSD is. It's not telling a hot angsty love story. It's not tackling the issue of AIDS. It's not even, though it's almost blasphemy to say it, to showcase the hotness of Takeshi. Nope. KMSD's mission is to single-handedly change the viewers' opinions about the lameness of jdorama kisses. "We know you believe that jdorama kisses are lame," proclaim the brave makers of KMSD. "So we shall compensate you for the years of suckiness by having multiple, incredibly, hot kisses in ours." And what a praiseworthy effort this is. The only two awesome kisses I've seen in a jdorama have both been in this one. And they both go in my Top 5 dorama kisses, for sure.

I really wish I had the address of whoever made this, because I'd write them a nice, long thank-you note. Seriously. This is the apotheosis of fangirl dreams. And I am a fangirl. They have Takeshi running for half the drama. They have him wearing leather pants. OK, my heart got used to it slowly. But then they have him swimming. In the river. Still in his sexy black clothes. With close-ups. And if that wasn't enough, they have the wet, swimming, black-clothed Takeshi kissing. With gigantic close-ups. Stick a fork in me, I'd done. I have no idea how they can top this, but I am full of anticipation.

Hmmm, so we finally learn why his gf died. Childbirth, and their newborn kid was born dead too. Awwww. I have to say, dorama and Bolly medicines have a lot in common. It's pretty rare for people to die in childbirth nowadays, but apparently in Bwod and doramas it happens all the time. It's making me nervous to have kids!

But that would explain why he is so messed up and why 'sister' yelled at him he killed his gf. I bet that's what he thinks too, though this is obviously not his fault. Poor guy. Of course, if this happened three years ago, he was 23, so he got her pregnant when he was 22 and they've been living together since they were 16 (as sister indicated) so that's a very long but very young relationship. Awwwww.

I really like that they've made his feelings for Masaki a lot more complex than "I love you and want to be with you." Clearly, a lot of it is mixed in with his issues about his dead gf, and his guilt and/or desire to relive the experience and sort of a second chance. Now, that's not all there is to it (he called Masaki and wanted to hang out with her before he knew she was dying) but it's clearly mixed in there. That's why he can't do the rational sane thing and leave her alone. I think it's pretty significant that the images of Masaki that flash in his head when he is being driven to the airport are twofold: the images of her telling him she loves him are mixed with her talking about how with him she forgets about being ill or how she can't live without loving him. Basically, he loves her, but she needs him and ultimately that is why he can't leave her alone. And I love that he really tries to do that. He tries to leave her. He books the tickets, he lets her go when she tells him to leave (she's found out about his dead gf and thinks he only hangs out with her out of pity etc etc). But ultimately, he can't.

And thus we get another of my all time favorite dorama scenes. She is on that bridge they come to a lot, and she is balancing on the railing (OK, what, this is your second suicide attempt? I really want to smack you. It's great to find meaning in life in loving somebody, but you have to stand on your own two feet. Though I am not sure she is planning to jump, just thinking about it). And then she hears: "Are you planning to jump off? Go ahead. I'll jump after you, as many times as necessary."

And it's Keigo. And I die.

And he is wearing all black (duh :P) and then he climbs on the railing a few feet away from her.

And she stares at him as if he's Christmas and all her birthdays and Valentine's Day all at once.

But because she doesn't want to believe yet again, she yells at him: "I am dying" to let him go away basically.

And then.

And then.

And then.

Basically, I am just squeeing even thinking about it,

he says: "Then die in my arms."

...

...

...

...

...

*the rest of this post brought to you by dead body of dangermousie*

And he tells her: "I will hold you in my arms and I will send you off. You don't have to worry about being alone."

And as she continues looking at him incredulously (I think she is utterly stunned), he asks her "Don't you believe me?" and looks at her and jumps into the water. Off the bridge.

You know how this is unrealistic, melodramatic, designed for maximum effect? Well, it's working. I am screaming in my house at this point.

And she yells his name but of course he surfaces and he looks even hotter wet and she takes a look and jumps in after him.

And he swims to her and she is grinning and saying something to the effect of "I guess it's not that easy to die" and then we get the kissing because he leans in and there are extreme close-ups and they are kissing all wet in the water and it's a long, hot, thorough kiss and if I thought the previous kiss was good, this one blows it out of the water (pardon the pun).

Whoa.

And he asks her to go to America with him.

This thing is the best thing ever invented.

Hmm. Hot kisses like never seen in doramas = VERY VERY good (100 points)

Alexandra's heart that can't stand seeing someone dying of AIDS on TV screen = VERY VERY BAD (105 points)

Really Really hard choice.

But - EEEEE! Thank you so much for your write-ups. they are fabulous.

You should totally watch. It's angsty but not depressing because it's a melodrama dn you know from the beginning how it's going to go and I am finding it delicious, not miserable.

I love the lines keigo says on the bridge scene. :) those are my favorites too.

I also remember reading that when the writers of GPGMMT were looking for the lead role of keigo, they couldn't get anyone to do it. Given its controversial and all. Then they sent the script to takeshi which he liked... and yay for us fangirls!!!

Given its controversial and all.

Hmmm. How weird. I mean, yeah, he falls for and hooks up with a 17 year old (she is 17 in the beginning, right). And there is the whole AIDS thing. But it's so odd to think of it being controversial because Keigo is such a sweetheart, really...

the writers implied that even the most popular of dorama actors didnt want anything to do with it. its just the AIDS thing, i guess most are apprehensive to take that on. but yes, keigo is indeed just a battered, broken dude, who learned to love again. *sigh*

I'm very tempted to add this to my watch list. But, I have to admit, when I first read the synopsis, I kinda giggled over the whole 'getting AIDS because she slept with some guy to buy a concert ticket' thing, because it sounded so... contrived and a bit ridiculous (very bad!fic-ish, if you know what I mean)... but... I really only like angst if there is a happy ending on the other side of all the heart-crushing doom. And there is no way that this can end well, and I don't know if I can take it (what with all the Silence I've been watching)... but your comments kinda make it seem appealing, and I'm a bit torn...

Well, it's actually a bit more complicated than the ticket thing. She does it because she also feels bad for her friend getting her money stolen, and she actually ends up telling the guy it's for free because she feels bad for him (and he leaves her money anyway). This is highly melodramatic of course. Personally, it adds to the delicious glee of it all.

Id' rec it despite the inevitabl bad ending just because it's delicious angst, not misery-inducing angst...

Yes, this is the best thing ever invented.

But there's more. You're only on episode 8, dear. And you know the rules of jdrama--the happier they are now, the worse it's bound to be later, right? I'm glad you're enjoying it so much. :)
