Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] klmorgan, I tried to be strong and save watching more KMSD until we could continue together, but I couldn't help it. I blame Takeshi. Yeah. That's it. But I would totally love to (re)watch this with you if you want.

The thought that someone made Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake and that I actually can watch it, here on my own TV, feels me with unholy glee. Though the name is somewhat misleading. Yes, “God, Give Me More Time” is a catchy title. But not as catchy as “God, give me more Takeshi Kaneshiro, preferably angsty, running and wet” which is really what it’s all about.

Oh, and the kissing! Oh. My. God. I think the kissing scene in this one has totally made up for the usually crappy kissing in jdoramas.

Oh Keigo. How much do you rock? You totally own me. Of course, on some level, this is a typical fangirl fantasy: “I am going to meet this famous celebrity and it will turn out that the cynical careless façade is just a shell and inside is this amazing guy. Who looks like Takeshi.” But hey, it’s a fantasy for a reason. It’s so delicious.

And Masaki? She reminds me of a kitten. She is self-absorbed with the self-absorption of the very young, but it’s not a bad sort of selfishness. She is heedless, not selfish. When she realizes she’s been wrong or thoughtless, she tries to make things right. Sometimes I want to hug her (the scene with the banners in the stadium) and sometimes smack her (when she talks to the reporter). She is rather naïve, isn’t she? And she is so full of fun and vigor and charm, and manages to project a certain kind of innocence (not to mention the actress is amazingly pretty) that it’s easy to see why Keigo is so drawn to her, why he falls for her. But of course, however full of vitality, optimism or spirits she is (and that is why he falls for her: it’s an escape from his emo depression), she has HIV and she will eventually die, just as Keigo’s previous gf died (from something else).

And that is why he fights falling for her so hard (more on it below). But of course, once he admits it to himself, ouch. Because it’s clear he is in denial about their (lack of) future. When that girl who is his singer/friend/dead gf’s sister (who is also crushing on him which is disturbing IMO) rightly points out that no matter what, Masaki is going to develop AIDS and die, his response? Well, it might not be for a long time, or she might not develop it blah blah so she might not die at all. Oh honey. You are in a jdorama. What do you think? He is deluding himself and setting himself for a world of hurt.

Btw, points to this dorama for making the ‘extras’ in the love story so sympathetic. I am a little in love myself with Masaki’s guy friend who so clearly loves her but won’t tell her because there isn’t any point and who actually goes for Takeshi, to fetch him after Masaki tried to kill herself. And while I think it’s a bit on the creepy side to fall for your dead sister’s bf, I find the singer girl rather sympathetic. Heck, I was cheering her on when she was telling Masaki to leave Keigo alone, because she wasn’t doing it out of ‘I am so jealous and evil, I will bust up the OTP’ but because it’s true, Masaki was costing Keigo a lot, his career, his reputation etc and she wanted to save him. Somebody had to lay the facts out before Masaki.

But ultimately, who am I kidding? I love KMSD because of the angsty, angsty, doomed, doomed love story. So the rest of the post is about that.

I love the scene where he is outside the school in his car (how stalkerish :P) and he sees her covered in silly putty by the bullying girls. So he takes her out for lunch and I love that, because it’s the first time she feels she isn’t defined by her disease and she is so excited and nervous. And she tells him she doesn’t want to be hung out with out of pity but it’s clear what she is looking for is for him to tell her he likes to hang out with her. She is sort of testing the boundaries. And I love during this conversation he matter of factly reaches into her plate and plucks something off it and eats it because she left it and the shining look on her face. It’s such a huge deal for her and I love how he showed her in shorthand that yes, he views her as normal, with no dramatics but in little, crucial ways.

And then they walk around and she sees people putting up his poster and she goes “I want it” and one of the most lighthearted, adorable scenes follows, as he helps her steal it, by walking up to the poster and the person who is putting it up does a double take and meanwhile Keigo is gesturing to Masaki to nab the poster and she does and then they run and he is holding her hand and they are both giddy and she mentions she forgot about being sick, but that is not what I want to mention. First off, TPTB of this are geniuses, because they make Takeshi run here, often. But also, he is wearing all black, running, and then his shirt falls off his shoulder a bit, revealing a black tank top and an arm? Thank you. TPTB. We all know who the eye candy is here. I looooove fanservice.

And then they stop and she overbalances a bit and he catches her in his arms, eeeeee.

Also, it’s odd, but KMSD manages to make the scene of her lying on that gigantic poster and calling him to be sweet and romantic and not stalkerish. Kinda cool.

Of course, they think and say they are friends, but that’s clearly not true. They are just pretending. Witness her reaction to seeing the singer kiss him. Or his devastated face when he sees her there and realizes she saw. And he goes running after her (once again, Takeshi running. These people are geniuses, I tell you) and there is some sort of loverly ESP as he thinks of the train and runs there some more but it’s her cool friend who rescues her from her suicide attempt instead (I think this is Masaki’s lowest point. She thinks Keigo is only meeting her out of pity, she is dying, and she thinks her family doesn’t care. And btw, hate her little brother, he is awful).

It’s interesting that Keigo keeps checking his cell to see if she called but doesn’t call her himself. Hmmmm. Love the look on his face as he hears she is in the hospital and he goes to visit and he knocks some sense into her.

And then he finally writes a new song and dedicates it to her.

But then the evil free lance author shows up with that article he wants to publish which has some of the truth but so twists it and states that Keigo and Masaki were dating and that he has AIDS and he gave it to her, and they met through escort service etc etc. And it could end his career but all he says is that he can publish anything he likes about him but leave Masaki alone. He rocks.

And then she asks him to drive her to school for end of year and he does. And he encourages her to tell the whole school about being ill because she wants to, even though he knows that will end his career. And the look on his face as she tells the school during the speech that she is in love with someone. And he is so sweet and encouraging to her after her speech, when it’s clear the article will now be published because she admitted the AIDS thing and so his life is over.

GUUUUUH. I love him.

Wish Masaki thought more about things. I know she is dying etc, but he is not her pillow for her to rest on from her bundle of pain or whatever (that’s a hell of a mixed metaphor). Not the admitting she has HIV thing, because that I understand. It’s her later coming to apologize (because she saw the articles and blames herself for them) in the middle of record contract negotiations and of course that confirms all the suspicions of the execs that she is there (and she doesn’t realize it) and I love how he tells her that no, he will be fine. But of course the deal is off for him. And then she ends up talking to that free-lance journo about Keigo and the next article is the final nail in the coffin. And I want to shake her. True, she doesn’t know it’s the same journo and she says she wants to tell if it will help Keigo and clear his name, but how can she reach 17 and be so naïve? Honest? He is a journalist. He is going to twist it. Argh. But I love how he doesn’t blame her at all.

But eeeek, there is the scene where he tells his musicians that those who don’t feel comfy working with him should leave and everyone except the singer does. OUCH. And he decides to go to America (because we love pervs I guess :P) I wonder why he doesn’t bother to tell the truth. Probably because it won’t do any good as there is enough grain of truth in the stories (he did have a night with Masaki, she is in high school, she has AIDS, they are seeing each other etc) for people not to believe him. And if people believe the articles, I don’t blame them for their treatment of him because if it was true, he’d be the world’s biggest jerk.

My favorite scene in it ever is definitely the one at the end of ep 7. Keigo is at this huge low point in his life. His contract is done, the new one rejected, he has to move from Japan and the farewell concert he was going to do has been cancelled because no one wanted to buy tickets. All because the evil tabloid journo printed all these articles that Keigo has AIDS and passed it to Masaki through the use of an escort service. Yeah. Keep up, journo! Don’t you know it was evil chinless guy?

And he is realizing he is falling in love with Masaki and he comes to visit her because he’s heard she’s collapsed (from the side effects of her meds). And I love that it’s the music records office calling to tell him that and he isn’t thinking about anything: his reputation, or what must those music people think when they call him about this highschooler etc etc. He just walks to his car and drives over to her house. And he finds her asleep and she’s been writing postcards to radio stations to play his songs (which is useless but very adorable). And he leaves her a ticket for his concert (this is before he finds out about the cancellation) and walks out. And when she wakes up and runs after him he basically lashes out at her, telling her that to have the devotion of a sick person is insupportable.

And then we have this huge emo moment of angst which totally made me glee. Because we have Keigo, in his sexy black clothes, on his sexy satin sheets, sort of curl up in a fetal position (or writhe on the bed :P) and then he screams into his pillow in excess of angst. Because he hates hurting her and hates falling in love with her, and this drama knows its demographic. And its demographic is me, giggling and squeeing at the same time.

And he goes to various places they used to go together. AWWWW.

But anyhow, then we finally get to my favorite scene (but hey, I had to set it up, right?).

He shows up at the entirely empty stadium and idly plucks at the keys. And he is remembering when they were crowded with people chanting his name. And then he hears a voice (and it’s Masaki’s) going ‘Keigo, Keigo, Keigo’ in an echo of that chant (side note: this girl says ‘Keigo’ more than Miaka said ‘Tamahome’ and she doesn’t even have the excuse of supernatural beasties after her). And he frantically looks up but he doesn’t see her but he sees all these banners around the whole stadium, saying ‘I love Keigo” and then he sees a little lonely white flag with a heart wave at him from behind a chair (and it’s unbearable cuteness, seriously). And then Masaki gets up from behind there and the look on his face! And she is still holding the little flag, and she is smiling and telling him how it took her a week to make these and she doesn’t care if he thinks she’s a pest, she loves him. And even if she’ll never see him again, she will love him anyway. And she is sort of sobbing a little as this speech progresses.

And you see him slam his hands on the keys and he starts talking, and you can see he finally broke down and he has tears in his voice (always a sure fire killer) as he tells her “Yes, you are a pest. Do you know the trouble you caused me? I lost my job. People talk about me behind my back. I have to leave this country. Love. You don’t know what love is. It’s painful. It will only give you pain. Pain, burdens and trouble.” And as he is saying this, he is walking towards her and the look of realization on her face is awesome and he continues “Why are you like that? Why do you make me feel this way?” and then he just grabs her and hugs her into this totally enveloping hug and holds her tightly. And then he leans in and kisses her.

And I am dead. And that is a hell of a sexy, thorough, swoony kiss, and the camera does close-ups on their faces and their mouths (especially as he first leans in and their mouths make contact and the camera just fixates on their lips and HOT) and he is cradling her face in his hands as he is kissing her and that is my total weakness, especially since his hands are huge and her face is tiny. And she is so startled at first, her eyes are open and her arms aren’t around him but he continues kissing her and her eyes close and her arms go around him and they continue kissing and guuuuuuuuh. This certainly goes into Top 5 best dorama kisses. Ever. Grrrr. There is no way I can convey the awesomeness of this kiss in words.

And then there is the drive back to her house and more kissing. Love.

And they meet up and he is so clearly freaking out about her health and she is trying to cheer him up in her own way by climbing on the railing of the bridge and saying she won’t fall off and she refuses to die. It’s a bizarre thing to do, but it leads to angstily running Takeshi (yes, again. He must have been exhausted during the shoot) and some cool hugging, so I won’t complain.

Ack! Takeshi OWNS me too ^^

Shimotsuma Monogatari/Kamikaza Girls has been publised in the US on dvd, I've found it at amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Kamikaze-Girls-Tetsuya-Nakashima/dp/B000BYA4M4/sr=8-1/qid=1161085383/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-9037047-1035000?ie=UTF8

This is the plot summary I've found at amazon (OMFG I'm so freaking lazy):

Momoko is an ordinary girl, living an ordinary life. Ordinary, that is, if you define ordinary as wearing elaborate lolita dresses from the Rococo period in 18th Century France. A complete fish out of water in her rural and sleepy Japanese town, where everyone buys their clothes (and everything else) at the same store and no one understands her, Momoko's life is one of sugared sweets and frilly treats. Desperate to make some money to pay for her expensive indulgence, Momoko tries selling bootleg Ver*ace and Uni*ersal Studios clothes left over from her Dad's yakuza (gangster) days. However, when punk girl and self-styled 'Yanki' Ichiko comes calling, her days as 'ordinary' are most certainly numbered... Road movie, buddy comedy, deeply insightful and surprisingly touching, the surreal world only further highlights the all too real friendship that brings these two unlikely girls together.
