Baker Daddy, please roast in hell
Jan. 5th, 2011 10:27 pmRewatching BK reminds me how much I loathe Daddy Gu with every fibre of my being. Yeah, Mama Gu is evil and Secretary is also no gift to humanity but nothing compares with my loathing for Baker Daddy.
It's all his fault his wife turns into this monster - she marries him for love (and brings plenty of money to the marriage) but he notices her about as much as he does furniture. And he and his awful mother both hate and disdain her for not producing a son so he could have an heir (as far as I know, BK is not set in the 1500s, so they should know it's the man's sperm, but clearly that would take away from wife-blaming fun). Hell, when Mama Gu gives birth to the second daughter, Daddy Gu doesn't even bother going to the hospital to see his child because it's a girl. Instead he has fun sexytimes with the housemaid while his wife is recuperating. And then he and his nasty Mom are appalled that his wife is not overjoyed to see the housemaid pregnant, potentially with a son!
I mean, no wonder Mama Gu went batshit. I would too.
It doesn't get much better with the years, either. He shows about as much affection to any family member as if he was an icicle. He still views Mama Gu as furniture even after she's given him a son. He treats his three children - Ma Jun and two sisters - with about as much love and interest as I would a fly. His oldest daughter is clearly smart, capable, and dedicated to the business but he doesn't want to teach her anything and refuses to have much to do with her because OMG!she's a girl! so clearly worthless (you have no idea how much I love that at the end she's the one running the business and not Takgu or Ma Jun. In your face, evil old bastard!). I don't think he's even sure of the middle daughter's name and I haven't seen them interact ever. As to the way he treats Ma Jun, the less said the better - the kid desperately craves his approval but Baker Daddy treats him worse than dirt. The reason Ma Jun is so screwed up is squarely on Baker Daddy's shoulders.
He seems to, for whatever reason, be very fond of Takgu (which must make his other, unloved kids, feel even better) but that's about the only inexplicable exception. And not like he was a good protective father to him either.
That's why I loved that at the end he can't bake bread any more - the one thing he seemed to like. And his company is run by a woman. And his kids are free of him.
Ugh, DIAF, evil baker daddy!
