Fantastic Glee (and Bolly eye candy)
Dec. 7th, 2005 06:50 pmThis will mean absolutely nothing to anyone on my friends-list who is not a Bollyhollic, but I am jumping for joy (while sitting on my chair, heeee), because it seems as if my new and favorite Bollywood screen couple, Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan have signed on for another movie. They starred in my favorite Bolly movie this year by far, period adaptation of a Bengali classic novel Parineeta (Vidya's debut movie) and I was instantly a goner. Forget Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee (well, not forget, precisely, but I prefer Saif and Vidya's glorious elegant sepia angst), Saif and Vidya are my favorite working jodi!
They have another movie coming out next year, Eklavya which also sounds like a period movie and is by the Parineeta people, but this isn't it. This one is yet another movie by the Parineeta people, Devi Choudhurani, which I really hope gets made. The plot? Devi Choudhurani was the result of author Bankim Chandra’s sojourn in Jagdalpur, Orissa in 1882. While living there, he heard of a village girl called Prafulla who was married into a rich landowners’ family and was badly ill treated. When she was thrown out, she met a dacoit called Bhabani Pathak who inspired to take revenge on her torturers. Saif Ali Khan plays the husband of Choudharani - Brajeshwar. Sanjay Dutt (heee, just for
thelana) plays Bhabani Pathak, a dacoit who mentors Devi Choudharani. Vidya Balan is the Devi Choudhurani. This narration is mentioned in the Statistical Account of Bengal, maintained by the British rulers of that age. Devi became a dacoit and then gave it all up for unknown reasons. But events show that a temple was built in her name in the Shikarpur Tea Estate at Rajganj in Orissa and that worship has been offered at this temple since then.
So yeah, I guess they aren't a romantic couple, seeing that she runs off from him and his hideous family for some revenge, but I don't care. I just want to see them in a movie together again. But I really hope it gets made!
For those who have no idea who I am talking about and want pictures, here are some stills from Parineeta
