Goong makes the world better. Seriously. If you don't believe me, watch this MV of it (to a French song, of all things), and see if you don't agree. And btw, [livejournal.com profile] lesbiassparrow, there is angst :)

Oh, and in much more personal news which have been making me incredibly nervous (which is why the MV above was something I went looking for, to take my mind off the thing), we put an offer on a house.

Let's see how it works out.

And btw, dorama fans on my list. is "It started with a kiss" worth watching? I know it was a huge hit but I know not that much about it.

Wheee!!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed you get it. Is it a nice house?

I like it. It's in an area I really like and has two floors and two bedrooms and two fireplaces and a nice little back yard and it's about 100 years old, so it's basically what I want.

Ooh, sounds nice. I hope you and Mr. DM like home reno projects, though. Houses that are 100 or more years old tend to need a lot of running repairs. Which is good, because then you don't end up with a massive bill for a huge number of repairs all at once, but not being the handy sort, I hate the idea of living someplace I'd have to actually work at to keep up. I bitch about having to put WD-40 on the door hinges!

Nobody around here lives in a house that's 100 years old (well, actually my hairdresser has his salon in a pre-WWI heritage house downtown, but those houses are owned by the city so he doesn't have to worry about the upkeep). But my godparents live in a house that's over 100 years old (and needs a lot of running repairs, in part because of the age and in part because of the damp coming off the canal, and they do a fair bit of fixing stuff up. Best part, because the house was designed and built long before A/C and fans were routinely used for cooling, it's built such that it stays pretty cool even in the heat of summer. Air circulation and such. So you may find your electricity bills go down, with old houses having been built to retain heat in winter and get rid of it in summer.

And my uncle lives in a house that's 150 years old, and is a teeny-tiny doll's house (former labourer's cottage. Two small rooms down, two small rooms up, and a kitchen and bathroom out the back. Working class people used to raise entire FAMILIES in those doll's houses), and my granny used to live in a 17th century weaver's cottage with crooked floors for throwing down the shuttle until she got tired of the endless pain in the ass work. At least with a 19th century house, if you need to replace the windows or something, they're usually a standard size. With a 17th century house, you need to get the new windows or frames handmade to exact measurements, which means finding a specialist. Which means expense and trouble. And the British government will give you a grant to help out with the expense of keeping up a listed property, but they won't help out with the other stuff.

Sigh, I wish I didn't live on the West Coast. Nothing here is old. Heck, the stuff that's considered heritage here would be just plain houses on the East Coast or in Europe. But, to sum up, 19th and early 20th century good, 17th century bad. If you guys get it, will you post pictures? I wanna see! So, and the area? Is it near where you and Mr. DM work? Is it near where you live now? I don't even know which city you live in, just remember it's on the East Coast, but tell me about the neighbourhood even if you don't tell me the neighbourhood's name. This is exciting!

P.S. Other people buying homes is fabulous vicarious fun for me. I have all the excitement, they have all the mind-numbing terror of the mortgage.

Most houses where I am from (at least in the city proper) are around a 100. We are having an inspection contingency so nothing should be too out of whack. The area is lovely (one of my faves) and is totally metro accessible, work-wise. I'll post pics if we get it :)

Oh, and I am so rude!

... someone who likes Veronica Mars, Bollywood, AND Asian dramas?

I feel compelled to friend you, if you don't mind.

Have you started It Started With A Kiss? I just finished it a few days ago. I think it srats rough -- a lot of Taiwanese dramas seem to take a few episodes to find their groove -- but after that, wow. It's not as good as Mars (nothing is), but it's another manga-based show, which means the story arc and characters are all wonderful and watchable. And the last five episodes are to die for.

Oh, of course you can friend me! I'll friend you back!

I haven't started ISWAK because the copy I got had lousy subs. I am getting one with good subs but it will take a bit. Meanwhile I plan to watch A Love to Kill and Devil Beside You first. But ISWAK is definitely on the short list.

True. I actually rather like that it takes a bit to 'fall in.' I dled the beginning of ISWAK and watched it already and thought it was so funny. The way Ariel Lin's character just falls there with her arms rigid as he comes back and asks her if she has nothing better to do with her life :P

It's not as good as Mars (nothing is),

Oh yes. Sigh...

it's another manga-based show,

I love love LOVE those and I love that Taiwanese make a lot of those. That's why I checked out dramas in the first place: I loved the Mars manga.

And the last five episodes are to die for.

EEEEE! Can't wait!

Btw, I know I keep asking this of everyone who watched dramas, but did you try Silence yet? It's my current fave (of the still running ones).

Did you download from DramaAddicts? If not, you can get their subs hardsubbed from SilentRegrets... when it comes back online. *sigh*

Oooo, let me know what you think of DBS. (I don't want to say anything for fear of prejudicing you in some way!)

The way Ariel Lin's character just falls there with her arms rigid as he comes back and asks her if she has nothing better to do with her life :P

Oh, you're going to love this series. The comedy never lets up, and the leads have incredible chemistry. (And the supporting cast! Mama is soooo cute!)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAH we totally share a brain. *g* That's exactly how it happened with me, too. It's just so fantastic to see a long, developed story married to a format willing to devote hours to fleshing out that story. Which is why I'm hoping and praying that the success of Goong will encourage Korean producers to use manwha titles as the basis for future shows... Wow, what a fantastic show. I'm just now re-watching it with a friend (I showed her Mars first -- possibly a bad move, but she was very reluctant to watch "an Asian soap opera" and I had to bring out the big guns. Well, they were brung -- she won't shut up about Ling and Qui Lo. They're her OTP. She doesn't know what an OTP IS, but they're it.) and it's amazing how much I missed the first time around. Too much time speeding through scenes because "OMG YUL AND SHIN FELL OFF HORSES AND SHE WENT FOR YUL! AND SHIN'S FACE! I NEED TO SEE THE FACE!" because those season previews were a mistake on my part.

I do love Taiwanese dramas, but they have all the production value of an after-school special... and I don't care! Because they're using some of my old shoujo favorites, and I will keep coming back for more... even with their odd insistence on not miking their actors. *grumble*

Btw, I know I keep asking this of everyone who watched dramas, but did you try Silence yet? It's my current fave (of the still running ones).

Hee. I'll put it on the To Watch List, I promise. I'm a little hesitant, I have to admit, since you compared to to Kal Ho Naa Ho -- I threw things at the screen when that movie ended. I mean, it was awesome, but I hate hate hated the wrap-up. I dunno, man, I would've married the sick guy.

But Vic Zhou? Yeah, I'm game.

I'm currently watching Marmalade Boy (better than expected!) until SilentRegrets comes back online, alternating with Ariel Lin and Mike He in Love Contract, and also Gokusen.

Eh heh, this was a lot. ;) Sorry, so few of my friends watch Asian dramas, it's just nice to have someone to discuss with.

Oh yeah, I would have married the sick guy too. Or at least had a huge fling with him. But in Silence they do have kissing with the OTP and everything, so no matter what, not as bad as KHNH in that respect...

And I confess I checked out Silence just for Vic Zhou. And he's the hottest in this one of all the stuff I've seen him in. It's the suits. I just remember thinking Ling looked so good in the suits in Mars and though I was glad he was freed by his father from being corporate slave, when he was throwing his jacket etc away I was all 'No, keep it, keep it!' :P

I do love Taiwanese dramas, but they have all the production value of an after-school special... and I don't care! Because they're using some of my old shoujo favorites, and I will keep coming back for more...

Exactly! I don't care about the production values. They are better recently (the three I am watching that are running this year: Silence, Tokyo Juliet, and Smiling Pasta all have good ones) but I remember cracking up at Meteor Garden ones. And watching it addictively and not caring :P

I'm hoping and praying that the success of Goong will encourage Korean producers to use manwha titles as the basis for future shows...

I hope so too! I know Full House at least (which I am madly in love with) was also based on a manhwa. I can think of a few manhwas I want them to adopt, too!

she won't shut up about Ling and Qui Lo. They're her OTP. She doesn't know what an OTP IS, but they're it.

Oh, how could they not be? They are still my favorite drama OTP. Mars is very good at slow believable character development, heavy dozes of drama and little small wonderful normal moments that really make you believe in them as people getting along splendidly in quiet times. OK, I could (and have) talk about Mars ad nauseam (just check the mars tag for proof :P) so I better stop.

Too much time speeding through scenes because "OMG YUL AND SHIN FELL OFF HORSES AND SHE WENT FOR YUL! AND SHIN'S FACE! I NEED TO SEE THE FACE!"

Heh. As long as it has handsome guys (check!) and angst (check!) and sugary mush (I think, check!), I will enjoy.

Did you download from DramaAddicts? If not, you can get their subs hardsubbed from SilentRegrets... when it comes back online. *sigh*

It's available on [livejournal.com profile] jdramas, so I am getting it from there (I had a Chinese boxset with subs but the subs there are bad. I normally prefer boxsets). I am going to get to it after I finish A Love to Kill and watch DBY. Though then there are also Pride and Boku Dake No Madonna (Takizawa Hideaki!). EEEE!

Oh yeah, I would have married the sick guy too. Or at least had a huge fling with him. But in Silence they do have kissing with the OTP and everything, so no matter what, not as bad as KHNH in that respect...

FOR SERIOUS! In KHNH I was all, he's not dead YET, woman! Don't go and marry on the rebound! And then I re-watched Main Hoon Na to feel better...

*sigh* Looks like I hvae yet another drama in my pile... I'll let you know when I get to it!

They are better recently (the three I am watching that are running this year: Silence, Tokyo Juliet, and Smiling Pasta all have good ones) but I remember cracking up at Meteor Garden ones. And watching it addictively and not caring :P

Hah! I think you're right about the values going up, but wow, MG was bad... actually, I never finished it, but that was really due to the horrible English translation of YesAsia's DVDs. Now that I have another source, I'll try again. (I loved it anyway. I mean, it took me a couple minutes to figure out what the dialogue ACTUALLY way, but I still loved it...)

I'll have to check out what you think of DBY and and ISWAK, since I lost the thread of our conversation for some time. ;)

Ahhh, Pride! I remember downloading the first ep from an esoteric source a while back, but now that SilentRegrets is up (YAY! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!) I'll see if I can get the rest. *sigh* So many dramas, so little time.

Oh, yes, I loved Full House as well! And Kim Sam Soon I thought was really well-done for an original story... but I just love seeing them bring manga/manwha stories to life. It's a story conceived without limitations.

Heh, I'll have to check out the Mars tag as well, see if there's anything I can chat back about. ;)

Oh yes, please spam away. I like metaing about these only second to watching them.

Re: KHNH. Oh yes. I was thinking 'have a wild fling with him then come back to Saif's forgiving arms.' At least in Silence, even if the guy keels over, they would have still had time together. Bah, humbug on KHNH :)

Re: Meteor Garden. Yes, the YesAsia subs were...creative. The fansubs are much much better.

And I would love to chat about Mars as it remains my favorite one ever.

What do you think of Gokusen? I watched it a while back and thought it was funny.

I have Love Contract in queue to watch. I am mildly interested in Marmalade Boy (I didn't care for the anime of it though)

I love Gokusen so far... it strikes me I'm a bit ADD when it comes to finishing dramas. =P I get to episode five or so and then my attention wanders to the brightshinynew offerings. But yes, another I should finish.

Marmalade Boy is... cute. It's nostalgic for me, since the anime was one of the very first I'd ever seen. And Ken Zhu is an excellent Yuu/You; better than I remember him in MG (maybe because he has more to do, here). It's also incredibly short, with about thirty episodes only twenty minutes each. I should breeze through the rest fairly soon.

Eh, I honestly don't know if I'd reccomend it. I was charmed in the beginning, but the acting (except for the leads when together, they have nice chemistry) has continued to be fairly wooden. And it moves so SLOWLY. Gah.
