You know, I always used to think boybands were the instrument of the Devil: all those pretty, talentless boys exploiting the prepubescent.
So it's with a great deal of WTF and hanging my head that I must confess I've succumbed to the Devil's Snare (and I've hit puberty a while back, too, so what's my excuse?) The culprits? F4. Yup, Taiwanese version of a boyband has got me. The funny thing is that it's not their music I like. I've heard exactly one song by them, Meteor Rain, and while nice enough sounding, it's not going to get me to throw my underwear on stage in extasy. I was actually a victim of liking the characters they played in various doramas and movies and finding them super hot, look-wise.
It all started innocuously enough. I remember watching "Magic Kitchen," a cute HK romcom and thinking that the chef assistant of the heroine was rather attractive and so why was she wasting her time pining over an ex (I am glad to say the heroine finally saw it my way :)) On reading info about this movie, they mentioned that the assistant/boyfriend was played by someone who was a member of a popular Taiwanese band, F4. I didn't think anything of it one way or another because it seems half the Asian actors are in bands and forgot all about it. See, innocuous, right? Then I saw "Mars," my first dorama, and developed a thing for the male protagonist of it. 'Wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers' thought I. And looking up info, I discovered he was another member of F4. Then I also realized that I saw some movie a while back which had yet another member of it as a lead (the movie itself was kinda a schitzo mix of fighting and romance. I ffed past the fighting but loved the angst). And then the next dorama I got was "Meteor Garden" because it was a live action version of a manga/anime "Hana Yori Dango" which I loved. I knew that's where the F4 got their start actually (the band is named after the fictional gang their characters are in in MG). So I watched MG. And it was a final nail in the coffin of my self-respect. Because they were playing characters I loved before. And they were HOT. And I was done.
I am kinda hopeless. I actually have no desire to hear more of their music. I just want to ogle the boys. I guess that not only makes me a boyband fan, but one who can't even hide behind 'I like the music' excuse. Nope. I like the characters in the drama series and the looks. I think my quota of shallow for the month is done.
But hey, come on, in my defense, when there are four hot guys and they look like this it's understandable, right? Riiiight?

You can find more pics of two of the members in my recent post here. They are totally further exhibits for the defense. So yeah, I think ultimately I have a decent hormonal excuse. Now excuse me while I go off and hide in a corner. And bury any shreds of dignity I have left :)

F4 is hot. I've been planning to check out their music for a while now, but I've fallen behind as I've thrown my own dignity to the wind in a different direction. ;) BUT! I angsted over revealing my secret craze for nearly three months (confessing only to

Date: 2006-07-28 09:38 pm (UTC)you are much more forthright than I was able to be!
I kept telling myself that there was something severely wrong about going nutty about an Asian equivalent of N'Sync or similar and I kept working on this post for a while now, and part of it was getting all the pics but part was 'oh no! Dare I admit my shame in public?' :P

It's funny, I was a lot more serious and elitist when I was younger. It seems I am regressing.

Date: 2006-07-28 09:51 pm (UTC)Heee! Welcome to the club, honey. :)
Well, you're not alone - there are definitely other *cough*NOT fourteen years old anymore*cough* fans of Asian boybands out there, and I've met some of them. After all, you know me - I'm not a giggly boy-crazy silly little girl, and yet, I still find myself throwing my dignity to the wind. At least F4 isn't as young as some of mine are. Believe me, there is a whole "thing" about Asian pop boybands, and it's biiiiig.
In my own defense, it all started with Takuya Kimura who is still a member of an extremely popular bestselling boyband. Which then led to KAT-TUN. I can honestly say that I listened to KAT-TUN first and I liked most of their album, and THEN I started watching them. Which was a rapidly downhill road. Which led to all sorts of other boybands that range from the too young to the young, to the "thank gawd they're closer to my age" - and now I'm hopeless.
Btw, wait till

Date: 2006-07-29 08:27 am (UTC)yes, i love F4. and super lucky to have met one. ;)
i dont think age is a factor with fangirlyness over them. my mom loves jerry. so does my aunt (who lives with my family in philippines, and is old-er and single too).
aaahhh i can go on and on.

Date: 2006-07-29 09:19 pm (UTC)I agree with you, of course! :) There's only the slight ick factor when some of these groups are basically jailbait...heee! F4 does not fall into this category, thankfully.
You have a very cool family. :D
