dangermousie: (KOW: SIG angst by meganbmoore)

Oh boy, I am going to love Seoul 1945. It's a daeha drama (Korean period drama dealing with historical events) and, all in all, it's my favorite genre - my favorite drama of all time is Legend, a fusion sageuk, daeha's more fantasy-oriented cousin.

I admit the main reason for my checking out this drama in the first place, as opposed to tons of other daeha dramas is pretty simple - while I love Korean dramas set in sword-and-horses times, the ones set during the turbulent 20th century history are my favorite even if that subset is fairly small - I adored Capitol Scandal, Fashion 70s (I am still in process of watching that one), and am planning to watch Eyes of Dawn and Sandglass shortly. I even adored East of Eden before it went off the rails and too much into the "present." Also, S1945 is the only drama I've come across (except for prologue of F70) that dedicates a big chunk to the Korean War.

I was also tempted by S1945 because in some ways it reminded me of an angst(ier) take on the secondary OTP of Capitol Scandal- a revolutionary idealist, a tough woman (though no woman elsewhere can equal the toughness of Han Go Eun's character in CS), and a doomed love. Also, they never addressed it explicitly in Capital Scandal, but I always thought Ryu Jin's character in that was a Communist.

Plus, some clips I saw on youtube really appealed to me. And so did the whole doomed OTP aspect - it doesn't get any more doomed than an inconveniently idealistic Communist officer and a nurse-Communist-sympathizer in 1950s Korea. They are doomed whether in the North or South.

Oh, and it won the Baeksang for Best Drama, which is really prestigious. It also marks my third Ryu Soo Young drama in a row but, oddly, this is not on purpose - I checked out Lawyers of Korea because of the OTP (of which he is not one), searching for related MVs led me to 18vs29 which looked adorable and also reminded me of the fact that I own Seoul 1945. Though seeing that I want to check out Bad Couple, should I just admit that I am turning into a RSY fangirl and be done with it?

Anyway, I own S1945 DVDs but I also started downloading because I like to have them on my laptop for capping if I so desire and I found this scene in ep 70:

Both Hero and Heroine are held in a POW camp after their (North) side loses. There, they are not treated too kindly by guards that clearly have not heard of the Geneva Convention, or maybe thought it referred to a gathering of Calvinists.

Heroine collapses from the roughness!

Awww, he is still trying to reach to her!

Their day of wonderfulness is capped by finding out that male POWs are being transferred to a concentration camps but this isn't the same for the female ones. Plus, any with previous capital convictions are to be executed (which applies to Heroine).

This scene is full of an incredible awwww.

*ummm, guys, I was kinda sniffling at this scene, and I don't even know who these freaking people are*

*sweetie, you are the hero of a Korean drama about WW2/Korean War, chances of you getting a happy ending are the same as of a drop of water on a hot stove*

So very pretty:

But with his pesky ideas about free will, so not cut out to be a Communist.

Prison guards decide to be kind to fangirls. Oddly, the Heroine is less than thrilled.

He manages to see the secondary girl who is now high up in South Korean establishment and ask help for Heroine. AWWW.

I am starting this as soon as I finish Fashion 70s. Could this get any more awesome?
