More anime. I know, I know (does anyone on my flist except for
crumpeteer even watch GetBackers?)
I've watched three more eps of GetBackers. Two funny ones and one serious one. I loved that Hevn got a bit of background and isn't just a busty cool chick any more (and how sad is it that the part I loved the most about the ep was that the boys finally got to have a decent meal), but the funny ones (in the baths and in the hospital) were the ones that got me. I think, even though the first Limitless Fortress Arc is my favorite story arc, the episode with Ginji in the hospital and everyone visiting just might be my very favorte episode in the show so far. Hevn and Natsumi and Kazu mistakenly thinking Himiko has a thing for Ginji (wrong GetBacker, guys!), Shido and Ban declaring a race about who is the better recovery person and exerting their super amazing cool powers to recover the uberimportant...love letters for nurses. Head Nurse falling madly for Shido. Hevn trying to chase a hot doctor. Kazu getting sideswiped by his nice nature into being a nursemaid and being mistaken for a nurse trainee and getting a uniform (mmmm, Juubei would appreciate that) and Ban's cracks about it being a good thing Kazu is finally putting his cross-dressing to good use. Juubei being mistaken for a patient and getting an exam and his 'I am serious bodyguard fighter from supernatural fortress' vibe being recieved by Doctors as insanity. Hilariousness all around. I love when the guys interact with the real world. I have to say, I love the ships on this show, this ep reminding me of my liking for Kazuki/Juubei (one of the only three slash ships I have, though this one is canon). Juubei is so serious and straightforward and not overburdened by brains if with plenty of looks. And Kazu taking care of him and being his own cool Kazu self at the same time. The best part of the ep though is Akabane visiting, bringing a fruit basket for Ginji and peeling the apples with his deadly knives. I think this summarizes the perfect balance GB achieves between being actiony and angsty and being hilarious. Akabane is both a sick fuck and comic relief. Where else would you have the resident psycho bring fruit to a convalescing hero and it be in character.
The following ep was also hilarious, and called something like 'Revenge of the monkeys.' It basically involved Shido working out his relationship issues by inadevertently becoming a monkey chief (yes, it makes sense). I do love Shido hotly responding to Ban and Ginji saying he is whipped by saying he takes care of the house etc etc and is not freeloading and Hevn pointing out the more he says, the more he is digging his own grave. Of course, Ban and Ginji keep begging Shido to take care of the monekeys and he says no and then Madoka asks and the boy wilts. Heeee. The funniest part is Shido insulting Madoka's cooking, by telling her the lunchbox was poisoned and shouldn't the poisoners (he thinks Ban) been more subtle by at least making the thing edible. Because the boy has no clue Madoka cooked this one for him and I think he is facing centuries of couch time. There are downsides to a blind girlfriend :P
Btw, does anyone know where I can find GB scanlations? I've only found this but that's only volumes 22 and 23. I really want to know what happens in later volumes (it's up to mid-30s now) because here it's only up to Vol 14. If not scanlations, at least summaries. Please?
I also watched the first episode of Gungrave (by the same people who did my very favorite anime, Trigun). It's gorgeous and grown up and grim. Also, I think I might like Brandon a lot.
Also, this weekend, Mr. Mousie and I watched A Scanner Darkly, a Richard Linklatter film based on a Philip K. Dick novel. It's beyond brilliant and I cannot recommend highly enough.
And last but not least. Anyone know how I get a sitecounter installed and where I get it?
ETA: This morning, I got to the entrance to the metro station I take from home and OMG! First thing I see is a FREAKING HUGE VERONICA MARS POSTER advertising it on Tuesdays on CW, with KB making an adorable face. EEEEEE!

Date: 2006-07-17 07:20 pm (UTC)I think you'll like Gungrave since the main premise is angst. It's very serious and gritty and doesn't have the fun of some anime. It's like The Godfather meets a horror flick and it works. People do bad things, turn on each other, get killed, don't live happily ever after. It's made rather painful since Brandon is at his core, a good guy, but he was born on the wrong side of the tracks. Maybe coming back as Beyond the Grave is something of a redemption for him.

Date: 2006-07-17 07:27 pm (UTC)Heeee. Just thinking of the words 'Akabane' and 'fruit basket' in the same sentence is enough to get me to giggle like a maniac.
Ginji and Ban come up on Shido in the bath and feel distinctly...small and inadequit.
Heh. And the neighing noises on the soundtrack. *chokes* Of course, the fact that he carries the conversation with Madoka about her cooking stark naked because he is single-minded and she is blind is...heeeeee.
I did watch a bit after the first ep, and I do like it. If for nothing else than the fact that the artwork is gorgeous. But I really like the vibe of it as well. It does seem something I'll have to watch at a go, so it will wait until weekend I think. Mmmm. So much good stuff, so little time!
