I nearly choked at that line from Zai Tian to Mob Girl. Bwahahahahahaaaaaaa.

I watched eps 3 and 4 of Black and White and I am so ridiculously in love with this drama. It reminds me of the excitement I used to have over BOF before it went ridiculous and bad. It has a twisty plot, awesome production values, good clothes (it's like alternate reality drama fashion - nothing makes me cringe!) and characters I am madly in love with.

Seriously, the scriptwirter for this is ace, and so is the casting director. Now, I am a total Vic Zhou fangirl, so chances are I would have loved his character anyhow, but I realized after four eps that Zai Tian is my favorite character so far not just because of Vic - I just find ZT so very intriguing - on the surface he is this self-assured, good-natured flirt (sort of like Mars' Ling all grown-up) but there is something seriously else going on with him, he is quite a mystery - I don't mean the fact that he can be serious and oddly compassionate (like that scene with the elderly mother of the informant he knows is dead but she doesn't) as well as capable. That's normal enough. What I mean is the odd (lack of) background - he lives a lifestyle nobody can afford on a policeman's salary and he solves his cases via tips from an informant he has never seen but who is scarily connected to everything that goes on. Not to mention that Guo Yi the crazy drug dealer's comment to him that he recognizes him but his face used to look different. Huh? Zai Tian blows it off to Hero by quipping he went to Korea to get plastic surgery but he is clearly troubled by it and I bet that is not it at all - does he even remember his past? He seems to have no family or friends. And yet, he is clearly on the side of the good guys - he stops the train Guo Yi hijacked and catches Guo Yi, saves Hero's life and is clearly quite content to be a cop. Not to mention he confesses to their Chief about having a mysterious informant whose background he doesn't know. And then there is his running after the girl he saw in the club and yelling her name, quite desperately, and collpasing in a heap when he can't catch her. I wonder who she is. So - an enigma. And a very hot one.

These episodes also cemented my love for Hero, the other half of the cop duo. Marc Chao needs to be in more things - if I didn't know for sure, I'd never believe this is his first drama. Plus, mmmmm. So hot. Most men, even attractive ones, sort of fade into the wallpaper when they share the screen with Vic but I still notice Marc and his hotness, so that is huge. Also, in eps 1 and 2 we learned that Hero is tough and dedicated and straight-and-narrow, but eps 3 and 4 flesh him out rather more ambiguously and make him much more human - I loved his incredibly reluctant, dragged out "thank you" to Zai Tian for saving his life (I loved the dynamic he is developing with him), I loved his akwardness with the dead informant's mother, I loved that he wasn't superhuman enough to defeat Guo Yi when the car was full of drugs and affecting him, and I loved that he took the credit for Chen Lin's rescue (the Mob Girl is so very awesome) even though it was Zai Tian who got her out. (I think that might be my favorite scene so far, actually. Mob Girl coming to herself in the hospital, and Hero being there, and she assumes that it was he who carried her out and he doesn't correct her, not outright lying but confirming her misunderstanding by saying it's the policeman's duty to save people and the camera pans and you see Zai Tian standing there, unseen by either Chen Lin or Hero with a very complicated look on his face. And then he walks in and is his own goofball self). I wonder what Hero referred to, in conversation with Science Girl when he says he saw his own shadow - he used to think he stood squarely in the light but not any more. Is it his failure to stop the train? But it wasn't his fault, nobody in his position could have done so. Or is it the lie-by-ommission to Chen Lin? He clearly is beginning to really like her, which makes a huge deal of sense - to someone like him, a really really tough woman (she took on Guo Yi by herself and might have won if it wasn't for the drugs) who takes no nonsense from anyone, but is also very loyal and compassionate (see dead informant's mother - that is the moment Hero begins to like her I think - when he sees that woman in Chen Lin's care) is totally kryptonite. But of course, she is the Mob Lady and I think, regardless of anything else, his strict sense of morality would not be able to cope with that in the long run. I really ship him with Science Girl actually - they are good friends (she is the only one he opens up to) and clearly Science Girl likes him more than that. That scene, where Zai Tian invited her to "hang out" with him, Hero and Mob Girl - poor Science Girl (and that was pretty malicious of Zai Tian who alone knows how the other three feel. Unlike Hero who is very clear-cut and good, except for that lie, Zai Tian can be an utter ****). And no way does Hero not feel more towards Science Girl - he clearly is miserable she is there to see him with Mob Girl and mmmmmm - they stare at each other. Hotness.

As for Mob Girl? I love her to bits - any scene with her becomes more awesome, and any scene with her and the two cops? I glee and glee. I think she should have a super-hot threesome with them :) But joking aside, I ship her with Zai Tian so hard. So very hard. They have awesome chemistry but even better - they bicker non-stop and get into each other's faces - the scene in the hospital after Hero leaves and Zai Tian badgers her about Hero until she yells "Fine, I like that psycho and want him to be mine!" is comic gold. But also underlaid with serious chemistry between them. She might like Hero now (mmmmm - and who can blame her), but she is so going to get together with Zai Tian, and not just because both of them can seriously lack in scruples on occasion, not like Hero. They have the kind of antipathy which in fiction always leads to making out, you know? But as for now? He is totally uncowed and unawed by her, and she thinks he is a total pest (though with some depths - she really looked at him differently after his thing with the phone and dead informant's mother. Which was incredibly wonderful btw). Plus, she threw him on the hood of the police car at their first meeting, and he was the one who rescued her from the disaster train, carrying her unconscious body out (while Hero was too busy being heroic, heh, to bother about her). So yes, I ship them.

Ooooh, and the previews make me so impatient for eps 5 and 6! Zai Tian gets framed for the murder of police chief's daughter (the one he had a one-night stand with in the beginning). And Mob Girl's reason for liking Hero? When he carried her out, his shoulder made her think of her parents (i.e. presumably is comfortable and familiar etc). Only of course it wasn't him, it was Zai Tian and I love the look on Hero's face - it was such a little harmless lie of ommission but the more it goes forward, the harder it is to get out of it. Oh, and Guo Yi knows who Zai Tian is (or was). Hmmm. Oh, and somehow Mob Girl is in Zai Tian's apartment and omg - smooooochies! *shipper falily squee* God, please don't make him her long-lost sibling or something as the secret of who he is/was.

Mmmmmm...
