OMG. The outcry against certain potential S2 Supernatural spoilers (these ones) is cracking me up. Please don't tell me that my newest fandom is made out of 13 year old girls? Yeah, don't tell me because I already know.
The whole thing has the tone of "Oooooh, icky girls! Why does ___ get to potentially make out or at least share screen time with Dean/Sam/John/Second Demon from the Right? That would ruin my fantasy that Dean/Sam/John/Second Demon from the Right belongs to meeeeeee!"
Or alternatively, "Oooooh. Girls and their nasty vaginas will totally ruin the purity of all-boy."
OK, people. Stop having an emo fit. Chances are, all three Winchesters, not being, you know, five, or living in a plastic bubble, will get to interact on a more regular basis with various people not themselves. Some of whom will be *gasp* women. They might even potentially like some of these women. Shocking, I know! You know, it can be a cool idea or not, depending on how they do this. They aren't Mary Sues just because they get to interact with the boys, and not just thrust their cleavage at them as bimbette of the ep. And face it, Wincest is never happening on the show itself even if the rest of the world got obliterated except for the family. Come on!
Actually, I am looking forward to this. More relationships means more issues and conflicts and the 'recurring' means they won't overuse (hopefully). And if all else fails, think of this. If anyone ends up hooking up with the women, we get shirtlessness. I am not seeing the bad here. At all.

Okay, sorry, I'm back now. I just needed a minute. But yeah, I'm thinking maybe she and Jensen Ackles would have onscreen sparkage. And it's not like she doesn't already know how to play a bad-ass demon hunter.

Date: 2006-07-13 09:06 pm (UTC)I do have to admit, though, that I do prefer it as just Sam and Dean. I don't underestimate their ability to add a new character and do a good job of it, but I'd prefer for it to stay as just Sam and Dean.
They work so well together and they still have so much left to learn about each other. I'd hate it if they added in a third hunter that hunted with them. It would just ruin then... Sam-and-Dean-ness of the show?

Date: 2006-07-13 09:07 pm (UTC)And we know why the demon picks on them. He is jealous of the abs.

Date: 2006-07-13 09:17 pm (UTC)*nods* not just their abs. Their sexy clothes, too. And don't forget the sexy car :D

Date: 2006-07-13 09:25 pm (UTC)That would be perfect. He definitely needs to prove to Dean he loves him, somehow.

Date: 2006-07-13 09:32 pm (UTC)Based on how he almost wanted to kill himself so that Leila could live in Faith, if his dad died for him, he wouldn't even think before killing himself to make his dead dad happy.
It would probably make Dean the happiest if John sacrificed himself to kill the demon, because then atleast he'd die happy and fulfilled.
And of course, we always have to do what makes Dean happy because he's Dean :D
(ahh why do I always contradict everything that I say with huge explanations?? It's like I'm trying to change my own opinion after I say everything)

Date: 2006-07-13 10:03 pm (UTC)And yes, at the same time as proving he is loved, it would really screw up Dean. Though hopefully not in the long run (not any more than he already is, that is).

Date: 2006-07-13 08:44 pm (UTC)But my first thought to "female hunters" was that it makes sense. It's not like they Chosen Ones, like Buffy (ok, maybe Sam, but that's a different story). Basically, anybody could decide to be a hunter. And if there really is a larger number of them out there it would be interesting to see how women act in this kind of society/environment. And what will be their "motivation" story (just like Celing Demon/dead!Mama and Jess are their motivational story).
I can see how these characters could be cringeworthy. But at the same time, I see plenty of potential benefits as well.
It just seems weird to me to love a show, praise the writing and then immediately cry "The sky is falling !!!" at a new spoiler. When there are all kinds of ways, from cringeworthy to vaguely interesting to gritty, that it could turn out.

Date: 2006-07-13 08:49 pm (UTC)Exactly. It could be a dreadful disaster, it could be brilliant, or (most likely) something in between. The thought of screaming 'foul' on principle boggles the mind.
I don't think it's that late in the game. A lot of shows I watch do that: Buffy kept adding cast members (Spike and Oz didn't get there till season 2, Anya till the end of 3, Tara till 4 and Dawn till 5). Angel was the same, with Fred and Gunn and even Wes didn't get there until relatively late. Farscape didn't add Sikozu till S4, and Jool and Noranti until S3. As long as it's not a main character replacement, I think it's pretty standard, actually.
But yes, I have no idea if this will be good or not. I just find it weird opposing this on principle.

Date: 2006-07-13 08:57 pm (UTC)Still, I have really only glanced over the SPN spoilers, and does it say anywhere that they are going to be permanent cast members? Because I only got the impression that they will be around for a couple of episodes. Which made me assume automatically that they will most likely team up to hunt some larger demon (maybe their version of ceiling demon?) for some multi-episode arc or something.
And that possible scenarios include:
- typical sueprhero teamup structure. They meet, dislike each other, fight the big bad together, respect each other, shake hands and go their separate ways.
- the others die and we are reminded of "OMG, their world is dark and dangerous"
- their version of ceiling demon gets killed and we see them almost like an example/scenario of what might happen if the Winchester demon got killed, how it would affect them

Date: 2006-07-13 09:15 pm (UTC)I honestly wouldn't mind a reoccuring female hunter, since I think Dean getting with one is the only way he's going to get a HEA, if that's ever in the cards for him. I can see the banter being witty and the angst being amplified.
And if it were an Elisha Dushku type, bring it on.
Heck, I LIKED Sarah and wouldn't mind if she showed up again. While I understand not wanting to turn it into a soap opera and the chemistry between the brothers being the most interesting, I don't understand the violence of even considering some capable, returning female characters.

Date: 2006-07-13 09:24 pm (UTC)Exactly. Yes, please. I doubt the show will ever be a "OMG. Will Sam have the courage to give the bouquet of roses to ____" but a little personal interaction with women characters never hurt anyone.
I wouldn't mind seeing Sarah again either. The girl was cool.
