You know what I don't buy? In real life, Ryan seeing the amazing life of luxury these people live, and how far removed it is from his own poverty-stricken existence, and knowing he has to go back to the same p.s.e. would make him really consider the unfairness, give him envy, anger and an attitude. Heck, not even Polyanna would feel satisfied with her life after such a contrast.

He'll end up wondering why those kids should have stuff when he doesn't, just because of genetic lottery. Even if it's going to be an inchoate 'I wish I had this junk' train of thought.

He'll be either breaking in to steal stuff, join the Communist party and want to sack the places, or become materialistically obsessed in a more capitalist way and deal drugs (to those same richie riches) to support his lux craving.

OK?

I am also amused at the fact that Ryan is so white white white. Wouldn't it be more interesting (and believable) to have him be Black or Hispanic? As opposed to looking like every other OCer? Making the culture clash more real?

Plus, seriously, I am getting rentboy vibes. I think it's impossible for one man to tie another one's (when the other one is all pretty and young) without triggering those.

Also, Seth is so annoying I want him to die. And I like Marissa. Actually (and I am about to forfeit any accumulated coolness points), but I rather like Ryan/Marissa. Because I know how it ends and I dig angst. Clearly I am a mutant. But with a socialist consciousness :P

Ryan is unrealistically noble. Sometimes annoyingly so, but mostly he's ok. The character arc you're describing actually DOES happen later in the show, but not to Ryan. (He's the white knight hero and must not be sullied.)

The first season was pretty good, with only a few stupid plotlines. It maintained a good amount of funny dialogue and pretty people and I was very fond of it. Seasons 2 and 3? Not so much. Also, it airs against Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy next season, so I'm pretty done with it. I hate the whole characters-randomly-disappear thing. Continuity is not welcome in Newport...

Yeah, I watched four eps and I think I am done. All those rich botoxed people with their artificial problems are beginning to get on my nerves.

Oh! Rentboys!
I should have watched that episode.

Heeee. I am giving up on the show after 4 eps. I want to murder everyone in it.

You don't like Seth? Oh damn. No geekboy love for you, then, I wonder if you'll like Marissa once you realize how dreadful an actress Mischa Barton is. To me it's just kind of painful to watch, her "acting thing".

I'm all about Seth & Summer with the OC, their banter and everything about them is what kept the show alive for me. What ep are you on?

He's fake geeky. And dreadfully smackable. Maybe I am too old, or maybe all those spoiled kids annoy me on principle. I finished ep 4 (and Summer is dreadful. All lipgloss and no brain), and I think I am done with the show, actually.
