I am glad to announce, after reading certain spoilers for upcoming episodes of Boys Over Flowers that Mama Kang does get to join the ranks of kdrama parental villains after all.
Before, she was not going to be included into that select and happy club - sure, she did not want her kids to have friends of any sort, tried her best to sell her kids off into arranged marriages despite their wishes, made her son break up with the girl he loved by threatening her and her family and putting a guilt trip of the century on him (and enjoying every bit of his nervous breakdown), not to mention more routine sneering and evil eye exercises.
But sad to say, that is routine and nowhere near enough to meet the exhalted criteria of kdrama evil parent club members of which routinely abuse their children severely and spend productive hours plotting murders, arson, rape and other major felonies.
However, Mama Kang has finally made it in with these latest news!
So, apparently Papa Kang? The recently deceased Chaiman of Shinhwa Corp. whose death made all the major papers? Ain't dead yet.
He is in pretty poor health being sequestered somewhere on Mama Kang's orders.
Mama Kang used the fact that he got ill to not just take over the corp, I bet (no more of that pesky "seeking other opinion" thing) but decided to pretend he is dead to her own children (not to mention the world)!
She used the fake death to (a) get Jun Pyo "trained" to take over the corp - because there isn't anyone else or anything (b) leading to her getting to her cherished goal of having him break up with Jandi - I guess she was worried the threats to her family alone weren't going to work but threats + "look, your Dad died for this company, are you going to throw it all away when he died for it?" guilt trips just might.
Let me repeat that. Mama Kang made her own son believe his father was dead so she could use his grief and guilt to have him break up with a girl he was dating. And to keep it up, her other kid, her daughter, was obviously also told Papa Kang was dead.
Bravo, Mama Kang! Now, that is behavior worth of a kdrama evil parent. I am now recalling all her delicious guilt trips to poor Jun Pyo, as she savors his emotional breakdowns in front of her, with an extra appreciation. Bravo!
Not to mention it takes a certain kind of determined insanity to go that far all for the sake of getting your kid single - she must have bribed the doctors in the hospital, not to mention the coroner, death certificate people, funeral house people. Had a fake funeral! Lied to newspapers! Risked this getting out if any one of them finked (because Chairman of Shinhwa not being dead is big news) and thus the Corp stock tanking (because who wants to invest in a company run by a nutter). All to have her son not date the girl she hates. That's impressive. I never bought the whole "ohhh, Mama Kang must have the hots for her kid herself" talk I've seen now and then on-line, but I am beginning to believe it because otherwise this kind of investment is a little extreme - lady, your kid is barely in college, he might, you know, break up with her at some point of his own accord. He ain't picking out wedding invitations yet!
But, on the other hand, it's just this kind of over-invested, over-the-top, over-dedicated insanity that a proper evil kdrama parent is known for, so I think she might have been just desperately trying to get into the club. Aaand...she made it.
ETA: The YJ/GE scene from ep 22 long preview made me glee. Helping Ga Eul after the whole evil boyfriend fiasco and thus getting her to like him must be the smartest thing Yi Jung's ever done in his life because she is going to get him to man up or die trying - she is going to squash that emo pity party he has going on totally flat. And she won't be deterred by a rebuff the way Eun Chae was either. Heee. God, I love them, they should get their own kdrama!
