Btw, saw "Nightmares" and now Sam owns my soul too. Guuuuh. How much do I love both of them? Sam is just such a good person, a genuinely nice guy. Watch him try to save Max even though he is unsavable, watch him try to talk and help, and now he has severe issues, and those uncontrollable powers and nightmares (and what is that mother-killing demon after, anyway?) and he moved things through telekenesis to save his brother and OMG. Sam OWNS me. Goodness+sweetness of spirit+competence+angst=I am so there.

It's interesting to me that Dean is so ready to kill Max and Sam is the one who wants to save him. Sam is more idealistic and open hearted of the two. Not that Dean isn't good and willing to lay his life on the line for strangers (watch him tell Max that to kill Stepmom, Max would have to go through him, with the gun pointing at him point blank). But Dean always fixates on the victim of the scenario, not as prone to random pity for the bad guys. Probably because he's been doing it longer.

And yeah, he is freaking out about Sam's new abilities and issues, but he doesn't want to deal with it and is denying it will ever recur, and anyway, protecting the little brother always comes first. I love that when Sam, worried he'd become like Max (never, you are too decently nice and nicely decent) asks how does Dean know he won't, Dean replies that it's because Sam has one advantage Max doesn't. And when Sam goes "Dad? But Dad isn't even here," Dean smiles at him and says, quite jokingly and very gently: "No, me. As long as I am around, nothing bad's going to happen to you." And this is so Dean who was probably been the care-taker since childhood. And then he deflects everything with a joke about Vegas, in that way Dean always deflects, but then when Sam can't see him and he can let his guard down, you can see how freaked and worried he is. But he won't ever let Sam know that, because caring for baby brother comes first. Yay.

Interesting thing is that Sam can never use the telekenesis even when he tries, which means either Sam is affected by others abilities, or he's in such a primal state when it comes to his powers he really can't control them any at all and has no idea how.

But Dean always fixates on the victim of the scenario, not as prone to random pity for the bad guys.

I don't think Dean has any time or understanding for people who choose to do evil. He makes a comment later on that "demons I understand, people I don't" in reference to a homicidal family. Dean seems to be of the mindset that if you choose to be bad, he has a right to take you out.

And this is so Dean who was probably been the care-taker since childhood.

It's another indication that Dean was the nurturer of the family, not John, something also seen in Sam's perception that their father is a bit of a Nazi while he's completely comfortable with Dean.

you can see how freaked and worried he is

And it's just another worry to add on his mounting pile. You watch Dean get more and more frayed around the edges at the season wears on. It's way to much responsibility to put on a severely messed up 26 year old and it starts to show.

Do they explain it later in the season?

If John really was a heavy drinker who'd go on long trips, yeah, I can see Dean being the real parental figure to Sam, which would actually fit into their interactions a lot. The half-annoyance at bossiness and half effortless closeness.

It's way to much responsibility to put on a severely messed up 26 year old and it starts to show.

Once again, their father really has a lot to answer for.

As of the finale it has not.

Hmm. I saw it more that Dean viewed Max as just another demon, like the ones they fight every day, while Sam had different views because his premonitions connected him to Max while Dean didn't have anything like that.

Sam kept trying to save Max because, as he said quite a few times during the episode, he thought that he and Max were connected in many ways. First of all, both of their mothers were killed by the same demon while they were in thier nurseries. They also both have powers which they discovered around the same time.

Sam thought that the more he talked to Max, the more he'd learn that they have in common. Dean, on the other hand, knew nothing about Max and viewed him like another demon.

I think that if Sam hadn't had his premonitions, and found out all of the similarities he had with Max, he would view him as just a demon as well.

But both brothers knew Max was human and that makes a difference. They hunt supernatural stuff, not human beings. But Dean is always more willing to cross that line than Sam, IMO.

I looooove that episode. I first saw "Faith," and thought the show was interesting, but wasn't hooked or anything. Then I caught "Nightmares," and was a whole lot more interested! The rest is history. *g*

Yes, it's so good and angsty and full of all good things. SPN, I find, is a show that really grows with cumulative watching.

Btw, I love your VM fic. Do you have any SPN one?

Yes, as the season went on, I got more and more into the show. I can't wait to get the DVDs so I can rewatch!

Aw, thank you! No, I haven't written any SPN. I'm not sure why, but inspiration has just never struck.

And I do love that icon, too. :D

I know! (re: DVDs). I am watching this on a small blurry youtube screen and covet watching it on TV proper.
