Supernatural: Angst me baby one more time!
Jul. 5th, 2006 07:56 pmOMG. Home Home Home Home. Best ep so far, hands down.
OK. It's official. I want to smack Daddy Winchester with a 2 by 4. Hard. He knows where his kids are, he is not held down by some sort of an evil demon, he knows they are fucked up and freaking out. Does he see them? Nope. I can't think of any excuse that's good enough. Father of the Year is not an award he'll be getting any time soon. Ugh. Also, Daddy Winchester? I know you are rough and tumble, but surely you own a razor.
Poor Sam. So he's got precognition and he can sense things even the most powerful psychic can't? No wonder it's freaking him out. And I love the scene near the end where both boys see the spirit of their mother and they just break down, Dean and Sam both, and stare at her with all the longing in the world (Dean because he remembers her and misses her and Sam because he doesn't remember seeing her, ever). And then she is engulfed in flames, again, in front of their eyes. Must bring back charming memories. And then Sam, near the end, realizing that their mother died all over again, to save Dean and Sam. Extra guilt, just what Sam needs.
And I love that Sam finally tells Dean about his precog dreams (and how Jess' death continues to haunt him) and Dean flips out. And speaking of Dean? If Sam is barely holding himself together in this ep, then Dean is falling all over the place, all broken into pieces. He tells Sam that he swore to himself never to go back home and of course has to break that promise and he can barely function. I love the look on his face as the new owner of their house says they must have had a great childhood there, or the look on his face when his father's former friend reminisces about their Dad's love for their Mom. He both wants to know more and can't bear it. I love him telling Sam that no one else will die in that house. Yeah, work those issues, baby!
But my favorite scene was Dean's call to Dad. He bolts and then makes this absolutely desperate and lost and begging call, leaving that voicemail. Sort of like a message in a bottle and about that effective. And his voice breaks as he is begging for help, saying he doesn't know what to do. And he sounds so lost and vulnerable. And I am reminded that he is quite young, and poise or not, it's just a facade and underneath that facade is a spectacular mess and seriously, their father is a bastard.
I loved that Dean rescued Sam yet again. Yay. And I love that when Dean tells Sam what he remembers about that night, he mentions carrying Sam out of the fire and Sam is rather pleased. They really are reconnecting as a family and building their own functional unit without Dad.
It strikes me how Bollywood this is, in a sense. Our Manly Heroes are all about the love of their mother and their family. Karan Johar would love that.

Date: 2006-07-06 12:38 am (UTC)I want to know more of Sam's amazing powers. I like Sam and Dean's brother relationship, how they argue about their dad and he becomes this sort of ledgendary figure (hero or foe) but then the first time we see him in present day he's all hiding out in a parlor. I am now even further disturbed by "Wincest". I just... no. Family dynamics are plenty interesting (and occassionally freaky) as it is.
Overall the show's pretty interesting (although there are some "I'll just go with it" suspension of disbelief moments) and every episode the Haunting of the Week seems to give them a chance to Work on Issues. Any idea where this is filmed? Somehow I don't think we're really in Kansas anymore...

Date: 2006-07-06 02:50 am (UTC)What happened to Semper Fi?
First off, 'cleverbeard.' Heeee. I know I know, John has issues. Now, deal with those, Non-Daddy-of-the-Year, when they get in the way of being a half-way decent human being, k?

Yeah, don't see Wincest at all. Just like don't see Wallace/Veronica. Love and caring? Yes. Sexy lust? Nope. Family dynamics are cool enough for me.
No idea where it's filmed though...

Daddy Winchester isn't a bad person, though. He just doesn't want his sons to get hurt. :o]

Date: 2006-07-06 03:36 am (UTC)He feels that the less they know, the better. The less they're involved, which means that they're safer. Also, as you'll see in later episodes, he thinks that he's weaker when he's with them. He cares too much about protecting them and making sure they're safe and so he can't fight.

Date: 2006-07-06 01:58 am (UTC)That said, John is an interesting character. I can't quite bring myself to hate him completely. He definitely loves his sons, but he's a man broken down and never put back together. He's an addict who can't get control over his need for revenge. And he ACTS like an addict too, much of the time.
Dean kills me in this episode. His plainative "Mom" when Mary shows up is heartbreaking. He's SUCH a little boy in so many ways. His terrified call on the phone is just gut wrenching. He IS so young for all the pressure put on him and he's never really had a life of his own. This is a guy who's had to act like an adult almost from when he was 4. And I give a lot of credit to Jensen, who just acts his heart out when they give him a chance. It's funny that as messed up as Sam is, it's Dean, the outwardly tough one, who I want to hug and protect. When you see how conflicted he gets at the end of the season and how scared, you just want to hold him. There's also the extremely traumatic scene in "Devil's Trap" where he's pinned against the wall bleeding out the mouth begging John not to kill him and then alternately begging Sam not to kill John. It hurts to watch it.
I also find it interesting that Sam didn't know that Dean carried him out of the house. You get the feeling that it's not something they talk about often and the fact that Sam doesn't know the details makes me wonder how much they actually told him.

And he just whispers it and...awwwwww. Seriously, the guy is a mess held together by ductape. He makes Sam seem a shining beacon of sanity.
Dean, the outwardly tough one, who I want to hug and protect
I get that too. With Sam, I get a feeling that no matter how tough things get, he'll be able to pull through and come through it. With Dean? Not so much. Maybe because, growing up, in addition to Daddy Beardest, Sam had Dean to take care of him, but of course not vice-versa since Sam was the baby.
the fact that Sam doesn't know the details makes me wonder how much they actually told him
probably, as a really painful topic, they didn't discuss it much.

Date: 2006-07-06 04:49 am (UTC)Btw: the show is filmed in Vancouver. And here's a piece of trivia I just learned: the hospital in "Asylum" (which you haven't seen yet) is Manticore's basement! It's some abandoned mental hospital where a lot of series have filmed. I just thought that was cool.
