Supernatural
Jul. 4th, 2006 05:52 pmHappy Fourth of July to everyone on my flist who is American!
In other news, I watched Supernatural's "Bloody Mary" and OMG. Now I am in love with Sam. He feels all that guilt for Jess dying (and I think for him saving that girl is sort of a bit of a second chance) and he has nightmares and he screams her name and he is so quiet and fucked up and OMG. *fangirl fangirl fangirl* And he is nervous and afraid and still does it and I don't think he cares too much about life and it's all OMG. I never noticed the hotness before, either but ewhen he is all angry and determined and jaw-clenching? Yum. Unlike Dean, for whom I've fallen instantly, Sam's sort of grown on me gradually, but grown he has...
And then Dean finally has enough and wants to talk to him about it and convince Sam it's not his fault even if Sam will blame him instead and he is a pretty good older brother, in a very guy way. And then he goes off to Sam's rescue. And he smashes the mirror as Sam cannot look away because the phantom is saying everything Sam's ever thought about his own guilt, all the things Sam must repeat to himself night after night. And after smashing the mirror, Dean just grabs his face all uber-anxious and freaking out Sam is not OK and it's all so lovely. And I love Sam saying later, amtter of factly, that he'd die for Dean and the brief look on Dean's face. Awwww. I am all about the brotherly love in this show (platonic).
This really is anime-ish. Makes me think of Saiyuki with Dean=Sanzo and Sam=Hakkai.

Date: 2006-07-05 12:45 am (UTC)I like Sam a lot in that ep. There are moments later when you want to punch him, but in "Bloody Mary" you really see how scarred Sam is always going to be. Dean is upset because he wants to help his brother but he honestly CAN'T. There's nothing he can do.
Also great is the rather unsettling vision of Jess at the end. No explaination yet. It's sort of creepy though, especially since Jess didn't seem to be in a forgiving mood.
Note: If you notice, Dean's eyes also bleed in that episode. There has been no explaination for that yet, but the writers promise that it's in there for a reason.

I thought it might just be that he was in proximity and the spirit was pissed, but it's really neat to know that there is something more behind it. Of course, that's not a surprising thing in his profession, but I do hope it's something more interesting than he just screwed up one of his jobs (Berrisford Agenda redux? Heeeee).

And Sam looks quite unsettled. I must admit if I got offed because of my bf, I'd probably be pissed too...

Dean strikes me as someone pragmatic who just wants to 'fix it.' He knows he is screwed up, but whatever jealousy issues he might have (I did watch Skin and so much write-up goodness there), he wants his little brother not to be. But it strikes me that Sam is very good at being closed off in a very different fashion from Dean and, for being so still and deep, it's even more disfunctional. Once Sam decides, that's it.

Date: 2006-07-05 03:26 am (UTC)Sam also translates a lot of his issues into anger, much more so than Dean does. Granted, when Dean gets angry he's terrifying, but he rarely does it. Sam, on the other hand, allows a whole lot of revenge driven stuff go on around him (he allows a woman to die in "Faith", he unwittingly does something fairly unethical to save Dean's life but you get the feeling if he knew he'd still do it, he allows a woman to kill the man who killed her brother in "Benders") and he gets angry (he gets mad enough to walk out on Dean in "Scarecrow", Dean has to physically break up a fight between him and their father in "Dead Man's Blood", he throws Dean up against a wall in "Dead Man's Blood"). There are a lot of issues going on with Sam. It's like he's not sure where the moral line is yet. He wants revenge, but he doesn't want to kill people and is occassionally more humane than Dean. He's confused and that makes him unpredictable.

Date: 2006-07-05 05:25 pm (UTC)That's an interesting point. I noticed that the netherworld seems to be quite interested in the Winchesters. Not just because of the flame-o-gram, but because anything they run into that isn't some messed up ghost aka Bloody Mary seems to take as if he knows them. So, was the SS actually a demon of some sort?

I think it's because he's been out of practice for so long. He is someone who hasn't made peace with who and what he is, and he is driven by guilt that is a lot more personalized than anything Dean has.
