Pride: thoughts on eps 6-7
Jul. 16th, 2008 07:06 pmEpisode 6 is probably my favorite episode of Pride. And episode 7 is where angst begins to seriously hit for our woobies and...I can take it even less this time around than before. I really get ridiculously attached to both Halu and Aki.
EPISODE 6
This is the one where Halu's horrible mother comes back. The one good thing that comes of it (other than the bone-melting love-making scene with Aki) is that in confronting his mother as an adult and not a small child, Halu is able to, however painfully, move past being frozen in time. I think he is forced to realize his mother is no good and ultimately selfish to the bone, but also she is one fallible woman, not an archetype of every woman out there. When he left that scarf the Mom had bought him, it really is a proper good-bye. And of course, Aki is such a contrast to her: everything Halu's Mom is not: unselfish, and loving, and concerned for others.
How much like Aki to give Halu's Mom money (2 million yen!) out of her own salary, when she finds out that is the only reason the woman came back, so Halu won't find out this was the case (and this is after she and Halu had a fight about the Mom, too, because Halu thought she was being harsh on her. But Aki knows what's important and what is not). And she was never going to mention it to Halu, and tried to put in safeguards so Mom won't say, but of course the woman does, and Halu's face when he realizes both what Aki had done for him, and wha kind of woman his mother is! Ohhhh...
But Halu is so emotionally vulnerable where his mother is concerned, isn't he? Look at his face when he first finds out his mother contacted him. And he tells Aki about his Mom. She is the only one he does, and he does automatically. Yay! It's now normal for him to confide in her. And he is so off-kilter. He asks Aki to come with him to meet his Mom or otherwise he'd be harsh with Mom, but that is so not it: he is clearly terrified. And so needy: just look at his face when he first sees Mom. He is like a small child trying to cram all the parental attention he never got and should have into this few days. (Side note: I love that Aki, in her conversation with Yamato, describes Halu's Mom as someone who looks as she has not been exposed to real life at all. That is so true: you get the sense she is a woman who only thinks of herself and her own convenience and other people are not quite real).
Oh, and I love that Aki feels the indignation that Halu should feel (on his behalf) for the Mother leaving him.
Oh, and what else...the scene of Halu seeing his Mother with yet another man: final nail in the coffin.
Oh, and a random note: I love that yes, he opens the car door for Aki first, but when she is in the car, she opens the door for him from inside. It's little thoughtful things :)
Oh, and then we get the scenes I love so much: Halu calling Aki out and giving her $$$ back and apologizing and then inviting her to his apartment (first girl ever). And he tries to pretend it's business as usual, but she is making that little speech and is so full of love and pity for him, and he is beginning to fall apart, and she is taking his hand, and stroking his hair and trying to convey, as much as she can, that she would never abandon him (like his Mother), and he is pressed to her lap, weeping, and clutching her, and then he reaches up to kiss her and I die...
And the morning after...when they are lit in that gorgeous light, and are holding each other in bed, and he tells her 'I love you' and kisses her eyelid. They are so breath-takingly tender together, which is especially wonderful in the light of how much a tough guy he is on the ice.
And she cooks him breakfast, and there is face-making, running, grinning and adorableness.
Which is just as well, as the angstfest of ep 7 is coming up.
EPISODE 7
First off, let me say this: I LOATHE AKI'S EX-BF WITH THE LOATHING ONE USUALLY RESERVES FOR BABY SNATCHERS.
Seriously, the nerve of the man! He left Aki for two years, without a letter or a phonecall or any notice he is alive and wants her, and now he comes back and expects she is waiting for him with open arms. He doesn't even have an apology or an explanation for his behavior. (Contrast it with the time jump near the end of the drama, where Halu goes to play in Canada. He does not demand Aki wait for him, or wants her to promise anything. She is clearly free to do anything she wants in the meantime, including to marry someone else. All he 'demands' is his own loving of her at that time. And then, when he comes back if she still wants him, they can be together, but she is not bound in any way. Because yes, he might want to pursue a career, but he has no right to sacrifice someone else's freedom or happiness for it).
Anyway, we start with cuteness, Aki betraying she's been inside Halu's house, accidentally. LOL. Adorableness.
Yuri makes me want to smack her in this episode, with her running after that rich guy. Seriously, you got Yamato, chill, lady.
So much Aki/Halu adorableness before the angst fest: his sneaking a kiss, taking her 'bridal' photo, and her cooking for him. All of it=so awesome.
And of course he realizes bf came back because she asks him to hold her tighter and tighter and not to let her go. And he plans to do just that (despite his 'I don't care' words to his teammates: he really likes putting on a protective facade). He makes a key to his apartment to give her (and oh, he asks her to guess which pocket but he has a key in each...ohhhhh! And he tied a pink ribbon around it..ohhhhh! I really am an idiot but I was sniffling). And there is the whole night where they miss each other because they go to the other's person's house. And then next morning on the bridge, he offers her to guess the pocket thing but the evil ex-bf is there, and she starts weeping (in defeat and inevitability) and walks past Halu to him and Halu's face. OMGOMGOMG. She never knew about the keys or she'd stay.
Ohhhhhhh.
Few next eps are going to be so rough!
