Title: Uncomfortable
Fandom: Veronica Mars
Rating: PG, 480 words, spoilers up until last week's ep
Summary: Mandy the Dog Girl hero-worships.
Characters: Mandy. Mentions of L/V, D/V
ETA: thanks for the feedback!

Uncomfortable. When Mandy walks down the hall and sees someone she knows, there is always this temporary but insoluble dilemma: when should she open her mouth and say “hi,” or look and nod, or make eye contact. She is never sure of the precise proper moment: it doesn’t come naturally and she has to think it through. Of course, she almost always over thinks and either stares much too long or appears rudely spacing out. It’s her little private daily ordeal.

Veronica Mars never has to think of things like that. When she talks, she knows people will listen. When she wants attention, she gets it. And she doesn't back off, ever. Or hestitate, or makes stupid clumsy mistakes.

Sometimes Mandy has a little ephemeral fantasy: Veronica looks up and invites her to sit with her at lunch and they talk and soon she is Veronica’s new best friend and their dogs play together. She knows it would never happen: if Veronica talked to her, Mandy is likely to be largely mute, the way she generally is, and her stomach would twist a little and she wouldn’t relax. But it’s a pleasant fantasy nonetheless.

She likes seeing Veronica walk down the hallway with her boyfriend, Duncan Kane. Her bag is swinging off her shoulder, and her hand is loose in his. He is exactly the kind of boyfriend Mandy thinks Veronica would have: good-looking, and attentive, and nice. Veronica Mars gets what she wants. No one-sided, humiliating crushes. Just a boy who will come back to you, a boy who is perfect and perfectly right.

When Veronica Mars walks down the hallway people notice. People move (sometimes out of the way). Mandy hides in her clothes, behind her hair. Veronica is all out in the open, no camouflage needed. Mandy is not jealous: the open terrain of school terrifies her. She is just admiring Veronica's free, fast stride. Her hair is dull brown. Veronica's is spun gold.

One day of the new school year, the teachers ask for nominations for Homecoming court and Mandy knows, without doubt, who she’d like to nominate. She is not the only one, it seems, and the possibility hangs in the air for a second, and Mandy feels more awake than she has all day. Logan Echolls, a few seats down, makes a mocking remark once Veronica’s name is mentioned. Of course. For Mandy, Logan is labeled under two uncomforting tags: “09er boy,” and “sarcasm.” And yet, Veronica isn't deterred by either: apparently they dated over the summer. Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars. The sheer incongruity of this made it even to Mandy's ears. Nothing scares Veronica. She was probably never tongue-tied or shy. Veronica Mars is amazing.

So she squares her shoulders a little and adds her voice to “Veronica Mars for Homecoming Queen.” Maybe a little of Veronica had rubbed off, after all.

Sweetie, you don't need a beta. It's great.

Awww, poor Mandy. I can just imagine her thinking about Veronica that way.
I didn't see any typos or anything, and thought this was just perfect as is.

Hey, you wouldn't happen to know what happens in the thylakoid membrane and the stroma during photosynthesis, would you?

This is awesome dude. No need for a beta at all.

It's nice to see a view of Veronica from the outside from someone who thinks she's awesome rather than another hating 09er. *grin*

Thanks!

I was just struck by how Mandy, even though still very neurotically twitchy, was much more assertive. And it was really nice to see that somebody was grateful to V for her help (especially in an ep where we saw Jackie abuse that help).

Word.

Now, I have a question: are we sure that Jackie set the whole credit card thing up just to punk Veronica? Or did the punking evolve out of the set-up?

I'm trying to figure how much credit we're supposed to give Jackie. Also, I need to rewatch the ep.

I am not sure. I don't think it's supposed to matter. Ugh, hate that girl!

Yep, she needs to die or at least tell us why she's such a bitch. I get that she has insecurity issues because otherwise, she'd be more zen to Wallace and Veronica. After all, V's got a boyfriend, so she's not an immediate threat. That said, getting between friends is not cool. Nor is setting someone up to be humiliated. Bleargh!

Oh, and the badfic just keeps on rolling. I cannot read a VMfic where the VMVO is inserted in the narration by writing "Voice over:". *shudders*

Seriously, I want to sponsor a basic writers' craft class for all potential VMfic'ers.

Heee.

"Voice over?"

"Game over."

Jackie is boring. I don't mind evil (love Lamb) but this chick is uber bland!

Aww, I really like this. Totally in character for Mandy, and fleshes out what is reallllly evident given her in the last episode. Very cool! :)

Thank you. I do find it really nice that Mandy is so enthusiastic about Veronica, in her own, slightly oblivious to the world, kind of way.

Oh, I love seeing Veronica from the outside; especially by someone who doesn't hate her for whatever reason. I'm always intrigued by the disconnect between how a person's life seems from the outside and how it is internally. My roommate told me this weekend that my writing scares him, because it's so often dark, and I'm not really like that. So he has to wonder where it all comes from.

When someone's not privy to your internal dialogue, it's so easy to seem better or worse than you are. This is a brilliant look into that. Which is the roundabout way of saying I really like this.

Thank you.

I am really fond of fic where you observe a character from outside, by someone who doesn't know them very well. It's always interesting what kind of surfaces they have, how they come across (and of course what a contrast it might be to their inner life).

And your angsty fic? I love it! Plus, gets rid of the angst creatively!

This is touching and lovely.

I'm never sure how I feel about the character of Mandy. On the one hand, it's nice to see someone appreciate Veronica's help. On the other, I can't help but feel a little frustrated by her hero worship of V. It's sad that she would be so awed by Veronica's small show of compassion - if that's all it takes to become her idol people must treat her awfully.

Your story was wonderful though - sorry about the ramble! I agree with what someone above said. I love to see main characters from minor characters POV :)

I don't think Mandy has been as much picked on as neglected. The vacuum of people thinking you are invisible is probably even worse.

I do like that she is more assertive now.

This was great. I loved looking into one of the lesser seen characters. It totally works for what we know about Mandy. Excellent fic you have here.

Deinfitely enjoyed this! It's always nice to see the POVs of others, and you handled Mandy's voice very well. Mandy sometimes creeps me out a little, but it's nice that she has someone to look up to. ;) And why not our girl?

This is FABULOUS!!!!!!!!! It's so achingly lonely and sad...and yet, beautiful and fun. Sweeeeet. Thanks for writing this! It's great to get a POV--and such a well-written POV--of a minor character. Much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really good writing, too.

I really liked Mandy's little fantasy of her dog and Veronica's playing together; it's both sweet and sad, and says so much. What a great look at this minor character's interior life. I've recced this on [livejournal.com profile] vm_fic.

Oh, that was really so great. I like the comparison you made at the end, not something I'd have thought of before and fits so well. Its hard to find really good writing about the minor characters and you've done it beautifully. :)
